I have been accepted to both UMSL and SCO and go to IU next week but don't think I will have a problem being accepted based on GPA and OAT.

I was wondering if there were any students that have recently gone through this and what your thoughts on the different schools are and why you chose one over the other(s).

SCO is cheaper (tuition-wise AND cost of living-wise). That was my bottom line for choosing a school.

SCO and UMSL will be about the same total debt wise, IU is in state so it will probably be a bit cheaper. But I am really looking for reasons outside of cost, that part is easy to figure out because it is black and white numbers.

I'll be starting at sco in the fall so maybe my insight will help as opposed to current students. Everyone knows Memphis doesn't have the greatest rep but it wasn't anywhere near as bad when I visited. The staff went way above and beyond to make sure applicants have every question answered, and truthfully! Big difference from another school I applied to. Sco made me feel like part of a family instead of just student 564 who pays tuition. free t-shirt 🙂 the clinic was very busy when I went meaning I would have patients to see during my 3/4th years. Debt played a big role as well. I would rather live broke now and have a luxurious lifestyle later. Hope that helps!

You have to decide what you want.

I was accepted to SCO and PUCO and chose PUCO b/c a) I'm from the NW b) I can get a MS/OD, which SCO didn't offer c) there is a lot more to do in Portland d) etc. etc. etc. I would've gone to SCO in a heart-beat b/c the school had everything I wanted (aside from Master degrees).

Make a list of must haves. SCO was VERY welcoming. I withdrew from IU b/c they were very unhelpful in the application process and since they weren't my top-choice to start with it made my decision easy.

Whoaaa noooot true! If you're not a Missouri resident or don't get any money from your state, out-of-state tuition is like..$38k! Out of state for SCO is around $23. Neither state allows you to get in-state-tuition if you become a resident after being accepted.

So unless you somehow plan on spending like...$15k in groceries in TN that you wouldn't spend in MO, then they are NOT the same total debt wise.

SCO is cheapest for sure. But if you want something like another poster said an MS/OD degree, then SCO doesn't offer that. Depends on what you want, really..

I agree that it really comes down to what you want in a school. Everyone at SCO was very nice, and the facilities were impressive. However, I thought it would be a terrible fit for me. Money is important, but you have to look at the numbers yourself and decide what you want in a school and how much you are willing to pay. I am paying a little more to go to my school of choice next year, but I think it is well worth it.

If you apply before the scholarship deadline, and depending on your state, gpa, oat, your out of state tuition could be similar to instate. With a 13K scholarship, tuition and fees were estimated to be less than 22K from my letter.
