Unaccredited DO school or SGU?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I believe all DO schools are, at the least, provisionally accredited. I've never heard of a school not getting accreditation after they started, so I would take the DO school over SGU.

Yeah, what DO school are you referring to?

DO. Someone should start a thread entitled "Reasons to attend caribMD over US DO"

After looking at your post history, I don't think you've even taken the MCAT.

William Carey University in MS.

I am kind of offended you compare my number one DO school to carrib. How is WCU unaccredited? Not to be mean, but if you're that worried maybe you should go for SGU. They're like the harvard of carib schools anyways. Less competition for me, lol.

I'm not trying to make anyone angry. It's a legitimate question: Should I go to a school in the U.S. that's never graduated a class, or attend a foreign school with a good reputation?

I think WCU is a great school, or I wouldn't be applying to it.

I'm not angry, just saying. What's your location though? are you in a gulf state? And tbh you'll get a lot of biased answers on sdn. I recommend doing your own research and really thinking about whats the most important thing for you. Like match rates for the speciality you want to go in for SGU. Or if you think DO is for you. Because it really depends on a lot of things for some people. I don't like carribean schools for certain reasons, so I don't want to give you a biased answer.

That's what we here in the states call an oxymoron.

Where is William Carey? I was thinking about applying there...

I vote for Dr. Dre school of medicine. They have a 100% success rate in matching their graduates into either Gangstalogy or Bad-assiatry. You can't go wrong learning from a man with such a legacy as Dr. Dre.

Imagine being able to perform a hemispherectomy with a single hollow point round.

In the words of Kool Aid man, "Ooooohhh, yeah!"

A word of caution about foreign schools: residency spots are getting tougher to get. As more schools open (both MD and DO), there are more AMGs vying for the same number of spots. Forecast is for FMGs to get squeezed out for the AMGs.

With that in mind, I would go AMG long before I went FMG.

I hate you all for encouraging people to apply to my number one school.

just saying.

I hear SGU has beautiful beaches and restaurants. Don't forget about those nice perks

:laugh::laugh::laugh: Cole, there's room enough for both of you trust me, LOL. I agree with the above posts, SGU while being a nice school in their presentations is not a good option at this point. It may become a viable option again in the future, but it is too risky of a program to expect a US residency after graduating. Just my .02. Good luck with your decisions.

Hahaha dont worry cole you will have no comp from me. Now at AZCOM....that would be a different story.

Can I have PCOM then??

You can have any school that isn't listed below:

DMU
KCOM
KCUMB
PCOM
CCOM
AZCOM
WesternU
NSU
Touro-NV <-- You can probably have that one too.

😀

Oh crap, I had forgotten about Dre.

Think I'll just hit up SGU....

This is what I have been hearing as well. I heard that this would happen to DOs as well, but I'm pretty sure that person was just uneducated since DOs largely do their own residencies...

With that in mind, OP, have you looked at SGU's placement rates into residency?

Pretty sure WCU is provisionally accredited and can't get full accreditation until they graduate their first class.

No reason to go running off to the Caribbean.

+1. About residency for DO students, I seriously doubt that DO students won't be able to get residency slots and am confident that it's already being addressed for US students by the AMA and AOA as well as others. That said, the same powers probably don't feel the same responsibility for FMGs, just my .02.

If anyone in the right places figures out your true identity behind your handle, you're chances are toast for Touro-NV!

I just want to go on record saying that I love all schools; they are all my favorite 😉

Omnes scholis fundatur in Iunctus Civitas promovendi medicinae communitatis et medicina sunt mea ventus.
(basically +1 to the posts above 😛 )

I might not even submit their secondary. If it comes after Aug 10, I'm not submitting.

Actually a fair number of DOs do ACGME residency for a variety of reasons. There are not enough AOA residency spots for all the DO graduates every year should we be squeezed out of ACGME spots.

Has anyone ever considered the possibility that funding for residency spots doesn't have to increase immediately after expanding medical school seats in the US? Just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean that it won't ever. SGU is not going to shut down.

You're exactly right. SGU will never shut down because they take tuition money from anyone.

WCU, like any other school that has not graduated their first class, is on provisional accreditation. This accreditation is granted to any DO school BEFORE they can accept their first class. Once the provisional accreditation is granted, COCA comes to the schools twice a year and checks on their progress, talks to the students, and makes recommendations. This is done until the school is fully accredited.

The AOA and its accrediting body COCA takes accreditation VERY seriously, so there are no unaccredited DO scools. Just because they haven't graduated a class dioesn't mean they've gone through an extremely rigorous vetting process to make sure they can get students through to graduation. If anything,t he process has gotten even a lot more stringent over the past decade.

Even in the worst case scenario, if WCU went belly-up in your 2nd year, you'd automatically be found a spot in one of the other DO schools.

Unaccredited DO school or SGU?
