So I got into Midwestern Pharmacy school, and just sent in my application to Chicago State, which is unaccredited. Does anyone have any thoughts about the consequences of going to an unaccredited school, and any advice as to whether I should go to Midwestern or Chicago state, the latter of which is much closer to home and will be about $20,000
less a year? Also, if anyone got into Chicago State, what were your GPA, PCAT score ETC.

Thanks

I would go to Chicago State if I get in. There has only been one case EVER where an unaccredited pharmacy institution was rejected and that was University of Hawaii. But what really happened at UH was that they accepted pharmacy students a year before they notify the ACPE about the establishment of a new school, which is pretty stupid

Please be careful not to mix up the schools here in Hawaii. The school you're referring to was called Hawaii College of Pharmacy (HICP) and it was owned by an private organization called Pacific Educational Services. What went down there was bad. Was it related at all to the University of Hawaii? NOT AT ALL. Be careful. Although I'm not a student at the NEW University of Hawaii Hilo College of Pharmacy, I do know that they seem to be on track with their accreditation processes.

With regard to the original question, I would do a little research to see where in the accreditation process Chicago State is and use that info to make your decision.

Unless things have changed, CSU has not even been granted an on-site evaluation. You need that evaluation to get pre-candidate status. They review these things twice a year: January and June. If they were not granted an on-site evaluation in January, they will not have pre-candidate status for the 2008-09 year. If they don't have pre-candidate status, they cannot have a class.
Go to Midwestern. They do not have the bad reputation, the financial aid problems, and the regular scandals CSU is known for. The only recent news I've heard about CSU recently is bad news.

if the acpe meeting is in April for a school, then why do we have to wait until June to know the decision! Does it really take 3 months after the acpe meeting for them to know if they got their pre-candidate status?!?! 😕

ACPE might have an on-site evaluation in April. My university just was reaccredited, and the on-site evaluation was in October. The school will know unofficially by the end of the evaluation whether or not it was successful. Our evaluation was on Wednesday-Friday, and we got an e-mail from the administration by Monday saying it went well. They just officially announce these things until either January or June.

Absolutely 100% INCORRECT.

The school you are referring to is defunct HICP.

The University of Hawai'i has pre-accreditation status with ACPE, is currently operating, and is expecting full candidate status within the next year.

Please research before posting potentially defaming information.

And to answer the question of the OP....DO NOT EVER choose an unaccredited program over an unaccredited one. CSU does not have status with ACPE at all...absolutely 100% I would choose Midwestern, this is a no brainer IMO.

University of Hawaii-Hilo has been very careful to distance themselves from HICP. Yes, Midwestern will be way more expensive than a public school, but their accreditation is full and secure.

I don't have time to research Chicago state. I can tell you that they DO have an on site visit scheduled.

"Chicago State University College of Pharmacy

An on-site evaluation was authorized to be conducted during spring 2008, so as to provide the basis for the Board's consideration of precandidate accreditation of the Doctor of Pharmacy program at its June 2008 meeting. "

See if the school has established Med school, dental, PT, nursing etc. Also research who the school picked to be the dean. The only thing that concerns me is why didn't they apply apply to get the visit in the fall, they could have gotten better students.

But, generally speaking, a state school is very very low risk. If any state school opened a school in Cali, i'd go there. Paying 36K for private sucks.

They did and was denied. CSU is just considered to be a joke of a school in the Chicago area. The reason for that school of pharmacy is political, not academic. Illinois doesn't need another pharmacy school.

Interesting stuff. We in california are experiencing similar thing. An organization came out of nowhere and plan to open the 8th pharmacy school. This is a stand alone school that didn't even have a building not too long ago and for that reason didn't get pre-cand from ACPE. There is already a huge saturation of pharm in some areas in Cali and most if not all the rotation sites are occupied by the 7 existing schools and even some by USN.

At least CSU doesn't plan to charge 35K of tuition.

CSU might actually have problem finding rotation sites. Most of the good Chicago area rotation sites are taken up by UIC, Midwestern, and actually, Purdue. I can't imagine them charging more than what UIC does for tuition.

I think UIC was about $8000 a year and CSU would be about 13k. I would much rather go to UIC, but I stupidly mailed in the Midwestern pre pharm checklist and UIC said they would not look at my application. Sure is fun to get rejected from your first choice due to a clerical error on my part.

UIC is about $8000 a semester for this school year.

They're trying to get pre-candidate status. They're going to have their on-site evaluation this spring, and based off of that, in June, they might/might not get pre-candidate.
The order to pre-candidate status is application, on-site evaluation, and then final decision by ACPE. If let's say they are denied in June, they can try again for January.
