You know I've gotten such messages. I'm not sure what it is in general and what its function is when there is a private messaging system that seems so much more efficient.

I think it is like "writing on someone's wall" but you get to approve the message before anyone else sees it. You can also post messages to other registered users that are only visible if someone looks at your profile.
