Hi,

Any August Mcaters and nonresidents hear anything from UVA or UNC?

No hear from on either. I do know that UNC (Like Brody) takes very few out-of-staters, and the best chances of getting in an NC school are usually at Duke & Wake (where it's nearly 50/50 instate/out-of-state).

Heal&Teach

UNC takes about 20 out of state residents a year and ECU hasn't taken an out of state student for about 20 years.

As far as UNC's secondary goes, I hear they move kind of slowly. Getting a secondary from UNC means you get an interview (if I am not mistaken). Good luck.

I am also waiting on UVA. I was complete there October 8th. Anyone been invited for an interview recently?

I recieved an invite in the mail just recently. Can't remember when exactly I was complete, but It was around October I believe. The interview is not until January 20th.

I took the April MCAT, but I'm a non-resident. I got an interview in October (by snail mail) but had to re-schedule it for yesterday. Apparently, UVa interviews only somewhere around 15% of applicants, roughly half in state and half out of state. So if you get an interview, you've made it past a pretty strict selection process already, and you'll have a pretty decent (~60%) chance of getting in. Anyway, it's a really great school and now one of my top choices...I like that they really don't push people toward either primary care or research, but they have ample opportuntites for both. Also, they said they'll let us know about decisions within 2 weeks!

yes... you are not mistaken.... if you get a secondary from UNC and you are out of state, then you've got a decent chance of getting in or on the waitlist... but you're right they take forever to get back to you on your app.

I applied to UVA, but not UNC. I submitted the application in mid-august, but I sent the secondary in the day the august scores were released. Even though my file has been complete since mid-october, my check for the secondary fee hasn't been cashed yet.

my husband is out-of-state for uva and had an interview there at the beginning of november. he's waiting to hear a decision - it should come soon, i think. they only interview 5 students at a time, unlike the other schools he's been to (who interview about 20 students at a time). i drove to va with him and it is a gorgeous campus - i'd be really happy if he gets in.

UVA is really a great school. I was an April MCATer also. Interviewed there fairly early and it was my first acceptance.
I really didn't like the area much but everything else was great.
Lucky VA residents 😛

Hey everyone,

I called the UNC admissions office this week and inquired about the average MCAT scores of successful out-of-state applicants. I didn't expect a very detailed answer, maybe something vague like, "we consider all competitive MCAT scores," or "our out-of-state applicants are above the national averages for matriculating med students." However, I rec'd some solid info from a really nice lady in the Admissions Office. She actually put me on hold so she could pull up the right report on her computer. Then, she started listing MCAT scores of some of the entering class of 2003: 37, 36, 34, 33, 31. She stopped and said the range was between 31 and 37. Then she said that with all the out-of-state apps they get they really only consider scores 30 and above. Well, I hope some of you find this helpful.

Ah ha! it is just as I suspected. Medical schools are discriminating. There goes their credibility.

UVA was true to their word and sent out the letters 9 days after interview. my husband got in, and i can see that pianogirl also got in. congrats! there is hope for out-of-state.

Are you being serious? UVA has an average MCAT of over 31, so its not surprising that they have pretty stiff competition for their out of state slots.

I was definitely kidding. 🙂 I love UVa, I'll be there in August.

Hi all-

Dont know if this helps, but my buddy got off the WL as an out of stater at UNC last week- so the list is moving, albeit slowly by the sounds of it. Oh, and his MCAT was in the "range" previously posted. Good luck 👍
