Does anyone here have specific knowledge of downtown Chapel Hill apartments within walking distance of campus? I'm having trouble finding this information online and could really use a tip from an insider. Thank you.

I was down there this week and saw some apartments right by the school. There was a sign advertising "you can bike to UNC from here." I forget the name of the development, but at least now you know places exist😀 I just bought a place that is a five minute drive from the school--Providence Glen Condos. Hey, as long as you can make a down payment, I recommend buying a place---the monthly mortgage payments are bound to be less than some monthly rental payments. Plus, if you decide to sell after your time there you will either break even or make money to help pay off those loans. Interest rates are great now. If you do decide to buy and set yourself up in an ARM loan, you can get at most a 7 year fixed interest rate that is lower than the interest rates in the regular market. ARMs are great.

Thank you, Richard. I appreciate your advice. I agree that buying is a great idea but unfortunately this approach doesn't suit me. I'm single and would prefer roommates, but won't know anyone first year.

I should say one thing since you mentioned that your new place is a five-minute drive to campus. The parking situation at UNC is horrendous. Students and employees are invited to purchase parking permits for something like $400/yr, the eligible parking deck for dental students is still a significant distance from Tarrson/ Brauer, and those that do drive often complain that it's difficult to find a spot even in the lot that they are registered. It's more likely that you'll be commuting by bus or bike.

Thanks again and congratulations on your new condo!

Biking or the busline is the best thing you can do in Chapel Hill. It's really hard to find a place while looking online or from somewhere a distance away. Your best bet is to come down to Chapel Hill for a few days and then look around. If you do decide to do that, I could give you a few pointers. Also, as far as finding roomates, you should contact Terry Barker in academic affairs, she probably has a list of other 1st years looking for a roomie. This is how a couple of my classmates did it.

Thanks DCS. I sent you a private message.
