UNC Supplemental App

I am in the process of working on UNC's supplemental application and I have a quick question about it. One of the open response questions asks you to write about your DAT performance. I have taken the DAT twice and I am assuming they will see both of those scores (is that correct?) and I am debating whether or not I should write about the first time I took it (I got a 17...huge family issues the week before) or only mention the second time (21).

Does anyone have any advice? They don't really give you any advice and I obviously want to be as honest as possible but I don't want to sound like I'm making excuses for the 17 I got the first time around.
