Hey, everybody! So both of my uncles went to Tufts medical school and I marked both of them as legacy on the secondary application. They told me they wanted to write a letter for me as well to help out, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea and wanted a second opinion.

Background info: I already have 4 letters of recommendation from professors at my university that I have been using for applications, so this letter isn't replacing any "legitimate" letters: it's only in supplement to other ones. Also, the Tufts admissions page says: "Applicants must submit a minimum of [...] Three individual letters (we do not specify the nature of the authors) that will arrive at the admissions office separately". I was already planning on sending my 4 professor letters and since Tufts says "minimum of 3," I would assume this 5th letter wouldn't cause any harm in terms of "extra letters" (as I know some schools require strictly 3 or are specific about the details of the letters).

What do you guys think? They really want to help out, but I don't want them to write a letter if it'll look bad on my application.

Thanks for the input!

Do not submit letters from family members. It's skanky.

Definitely what I thought. Just wanted to make sure beforehand. Thanks, everybody!

  1. conflict of interest

  2. A conflict of interest (COI) is a situation occurring when an individual or organization is involved in multiple interests, one of which could possibly corrupt the motivation.
