Hi all, I'm new here. I was wondering with everything else aside, what are my chances if I have a GPA that's under 3.0?
With everything else aside? Not good. With everything else considered? You could still have a shot.

I say you still have a chance!!! If you look at other threads people with under 3.0gpa still got in!! Be on the positive side 🙂
try to emphasize on strong points you have

Thanks for your comments. I guess it'll help if I provide the full picture..

My goal is Pharmacy Informatics.. I worked as an IT for the ECE department for 2 years.. then interned at a pharmaceutical company (wrote software and managed robotic arms for screening department). I have over 4 years of involvement with an org but..not Pharmacy related.

I'm currently applying..should I take the PCAT now? do you guys think its too late? I'm taking summer classes so I haven't touched any PCAT materials.

I don't think there are going to be any seats left for the August PCAT, but if you're currently applying you should definately take the October PCAT. It looks like you have some good experience...it doesn't all have to be pharmacy related to be beneficial. With a good PCAT score you certainly have a shot.

yeah.. if i am going to take the pcat then it'll be the october one. I'm only applying to schools that dont require PCAT so will it be that significant to them?

ehh then why are you wasting money to take the pcat if you're only gonna apply to school that don't REQUIRE it? you do realize they don't give ditty squat if you have a 99 or a 10.

I AGREE..if u apply to schools that DONT REQUIRE the PCAT then no need to take it october.....but then ur chances of getting arent that great with a GPA below 3.0 unless u have an Extraordinary Personal Statement....

-GOOD LUCK

If schools don't require them, they won't look at it. It won't matter how well you do. The only school that I know of that doesn't require it, but still look at it (a little), is USC. But even then, I don't know how much it'd give your application a boost.

Thats what I was thinking too.. but a lot of people I know are doing that so it'll be a sort of "an icing on the cake" .. so I figured I'd spend more time on the application and hope for the best.

I'm also applying this year and I plan on doing a residence in Pharmacy Informatics when I finish. If you feel that your ready now give it a shot worse case senerio you do bad so you can take it again in October and still beat many pharmacy school deadlines.

HTH

if you don't mind me asking, what are you doing in term of work experience?

I have a BS in Information Technology and finishing up my MS in Computer Information Systems. I currently work in IT right now as a Field Rep and before that I worked at an insurance company being their go to person for everything IT related so lets just say I have tons of experience and the PharmD will just be an extra boost. 🙂

If you do a quick scan of the forums you'll see that below a 3.0 is not very competitive, although if the rest of your app is stellar then maybe you have a shot. If it was me, I would retake pre-req classes for a year and raise that GPA before I applied.

thanks for all the advice.. right now I'm just going to try and give the best application that I can and hope for the best.. then when I don't get in.. I'll probably retake classes.

All the pre-req/stats/pcat scores that a school requires is listed on their website. IF the school doesn't require the pcat, it means either they aren't going to look at it (which is more likely), or having a pcat score will have little affect on your application.

There are schools, such as USC, that don't require the pcat but says they'll look at it, but even then, its hard to say how much emphasis they put on the pcat (probably not much).

As for having a low gpa, you will have a much lower percentage of getting accepted into pharm. school if we were looking at gpa only. However, anything goes, and people have gotten into pharmacy school with the bare minimum (although very rare).
