I will have about $2000 in federal loans after graduating from undergrad. It's not a serious amount, but I was just wondering if the fact that I simply borrowed before PT school will affect my FAFSA process this year. Will I get less if the govt sees I already borrowed this amount?

Also, are you guys going to put your parents' info? It says to consider putting it if pursuing a health professional career even though we're classified as "independent". 😵

Thanks! And sorry if this has already been answered. I didn't see anything, but if you know of a source, please link me. 🙂

I'd like to know more about FAFSA/funding PT school too.

i dont know much, but if should not affect you. A few students i met who are at PT school had loans from undergrad and were also taking loans out for PT school...so id assume it wasnt a problem (also, in the gov'ts eyes, its better to give you more because then you have to pay back with interest!)

i filled out my FAFSA and declared myself independent. My parents haven't claimed me on their taxes (which has to be true if youre filing alone) and i'm funding PT school on my own, so really i saw adding my parents as only something that would hurt me. I guess its situation dependent.

I can't advise on the student loans, but as for the FAFSA question...

I emailed both of the schools I've been accepted to and got the same reply from both: It won't affect your parent's taxes at all being an independent for grad school. They are still able to claim you as a dependent, so as to get educational tax reimbursements, etc.

They also instructed me to not put my parent's information in, since it wouldn't have any effect on the loans I'm eligible for. The loans that parental tax information do have an effect on are Pell Grants (which students with a Bachelor's degree aren't eligible for) and subsidized students loans (which grad students are eligible for).

Hopefully that helps 🙂
