i have searched around the forum for info to answer my question, but didn't find it. if i overlooked it, i apologize. but in the background section on the vmcas, when entering the student reported GPA...do we include just our undergrad gpa or do we calculate the graduate gpa in as well?

thanks in advance!

That's a good question and I came across the same problem! However, in my case I am not in grad school, just re-taking a few classes after graduating undergrad...I clicked on "Instructions for this section" and it said to type in the gpa for your primary school...and in the explanation statement to state the gpa for all others ....In my case my undergrad would be my primary school.....As for your case, I'm not sure

Here it is:Overall GPA
If you have attended multiple colleges list the GPA for your primary college. GPAs from other colleges should be listed on the Explanation Statement at the end of this section.

Be sure to contact each school individually, when I was applying I learned that many schools do not factor in your grad GPA (undergrad only). I think Iowa and Kansas are the two that I can remember but it has been awhile.

I had the same questions...I have completed a Bachelors and Graduate program at the same school (and currently working on another masters) and wasn't sure if i should report my combined GPA:shrug:

after i posted this, i saw the "instructions" link in vmcas about the primary school and listing the rest in the "comments" section. 🙂 but just to be safe, i will call each school and see what they do. thanks for the information!

Last year I went through the same thing. What I did was list my cumulative GPA (I calculated them together), then in the explanation section, I broke down my GPA for undergrad and grad school. I was accepted at 2 schools and waitlisted at 2, so at least those schools didn't have a problem with the way I listed my GPA. If you're concerned about it, contact the schools and ask them how they want you to list your GPAs.

Hey jg, actually I have a question about how you figured in your grad GPA.

Did you only use the courses for which you received a grade when you put it into your cumulative/last 45 hours GPA or did you include ones like 290C and 299 in the amount of credits? Cause obviously we take 12 units a quarter, but not all of those are graded units, so I feel a little iffy about claiming a 4.0 over 12 units when only 9 were graded. Obviously the schools can look at the transcripts and draw their own conclusions, but knowing how other people did it would be helpful too...

This may also help: Instructions for INSTITUTIONS ATTENDED:

Is this your primary school?
"Primary" indicates whether the selected institution is the primary institution from which you earned your undergraduate or bachelor's degree, or the most credits, or completed the majority of your prerequisites. You must select only one institution listed in the Institution List section as your primary school.

Yeah...wouldn't it be awesome if our lab credits were graded like they are in some institutions? I only used the (few) course grades that I had...unfortunately, my undergrad GPA was 3.35 and the handful of credits I took did not change that much at all🙁. I listed the credits for which I was registered (ie 299, 290C, and TAing), but only factored my graded courses into my GPA.

I calculated and reported cummulative. I was a transfer student in undergrad and I took post-bac classes and university classes while in HS. So I had a whole bunch of transcripts. I did break it down in the explanations section.

For courses that did not result in a letter grade, I did not use the credits or credit hours in the calculation. I couldn't justify extrapolating the GPA from other classes to those classes and I wasn't willing to thin my GPA out by including those credit/credit hours in the calculations. Noted in explanations section. Also, everything that I took as pass/fail or satisfactory/unsatisfactory was due to restriction by the school in those courses...not because I elected that option over grades. Also, I did not include lab credit hours...all of our labs were included in the course, and my school didn't go by credit hours, but rather credits, with 1 term (1/3 a year, not a quarter) = 1 credit (regardless of how many hours in the class or whether it included a lab.) My schools also sends a letter of explanation with transcripts, and I sent an additional letter of explanation to the schools I applied to, since my undergrad's system tends to create havoc in comparing grades.
