I have a question about applying to residency programs. Do the program directors require an undergraduate transcript? The reason this is a concern is because my undergrad gpa almost prevented me from being accepted into a dental school. I would hate to think that it can still be a hindrance when applying for a specialty. Even if they did require an undergraduate transcript, how accurately can they judge a student based on grades from 10 years ago (I'll be about 28 when I graduate from dental school).

Thanks.

I know that OMFS residencies require undergraduate transcripts! Not only they require it, but the undergraduate transcripts are used in the acceptance decision! The 6-year MD programs especially regards highly on the undergraduate grades.

I'm not sure about other specialties.

I've asked around, and it seems to me like every specialty requires the undergrad transcript. They even go as far as looking specificallly at classes like Anatomy, physiology, etc to see how you did in those classes. I remember someone told me not to ever ruin my Anatomy grade in undergrad. As ruining anatomy is a good way to ruin your career or your way to specialty.

That is really discouraging to hear. I haven't even taken a dental school class yet, and I already have two strikes against me for specializing. I don't know if this would help my case, but I'm a few credits shy of completing a masters in Biology. I did this to make my application more attractive of course. Think it will do the same when applying for a specialty?
