Please post your undergrad major. I am debating on taking a non-science major. Will I be at a disadvantage when the admissions committe looks at my transcript?

Hey, not unless you suck at your major. Do something you like, I wouldn't have chosen a science major if I could do it all over again (which I can but I'm graduating next year and applying this year, so that isn't the smartest move). I would have probably picked a language, but my major is biochemistry, still kinda interesting.

Definitely not a disadvantage. I actually think that it helped me a little bit b/c i had a hard major and good grades. You should study what you like for the next four years. There are probably not that may classes that you will have to extra. I went back to school only for a semester and a summer to get the pre-reqs for dental school.

my undergrad major was political science and other than the fact that perhaps some of my classmates with strong biology backgrounds might understand the material much faster, I dont think its much of a disadvantage....at least I spent the 4 years of undergrad doing courses that I enjoyed and not struggling in something that I wouldnt like.

Go for whatever major you feel you wanna do....dont think u have to do science

I was Microbiology . . . I liked it, but I wish I had done something more fun

Life Sciences (Biology) with minors in German and Chemistry. If I don't get accepted to dental school the first time around I will probably wind up with two degrees, with the second degree being in German.

30 countries eh, BadVibes? You've got me beat....I've only been in 9 (US, Germany, Canada, Mexico, Ireland, England, France, Austria, Cuba (Gitmo))

Obviously, I'd say choose something you are interested in - and it definitely doesn't have to be a science. My major is bioengineering, and if I had to do it all over again, I probably choose something easier. Many majors allow you the freedom to include all the dental prereqs even if the major is completely unrelated. On the one hand, I think I'm better prepared for the stresses/academic load of dental school because I chose a challenging major, but that's not to say I'd necessarily do it again. If you're a really motivated type-A personality, then you could probably choose any major you want. Having said that, I don't think adcoms look down upon an applicant because of their major - if the student majored in leisure studies, for example. I think more difficult majors may help an students application, but an "easier" major won't necessarily hurt it.

I was a graphic design major but left it to do biochemistry, alot more suitable for dentistry, but its still good I have that art background...pick whatever you want...they really don't give a !@#$....but do well.

I agree. I majored in saxophone performance, didn't matter. But I would still recommend taking extra science classes, and, of course, doing especially well in those.

If you did well in pre-req courses (such as chem, bio and physics), majorining in non-science would not be a problem. However, if you did mediocre or poorly in these science courses, then I would highly encourage you to major in science and do well in upper division science courses. Most importantly, pick a major that not only interests you but also in which you can do very well. Good luck.

i was an econ major. didn't hinder me one bit. I took the minimal science classes 3rd year. make sure you squeeze those pre reqs in somewhere

My major is electrical engineering. It's a very tough major, but also very interesting area to study. You should major in something you will enjoy. Although your goal is being a dentist someday, you don't wanna study something you don't like for four years in college. Good luck 🙂
