So this is kind of a question that won't matter much for another few years, but I'm curious so might as well ask now.

I'm an honors student and have written an honors thesis as part of my graduation requirements. It is going to be "published" by my school, with a copy kept in the library and whatever. I am going to be giving an oral presentation on it at my school's annual research symposium.

Does this count as research and/or a publication when it comes to one day applying for residency? I figure even if it does it won't carry much weight since it was done during undergrad, but I'm just curious. Also, if it matters, it's not actual bench research, but does apply to medicine.

Definitely counts as research.

Don’t think it counts as a publication.

Publish it in a journal, then it is a publication. You've done the grunt work of doing it, just find somewhere that will accept it. I rejected my schools request to 'publish' my senior thesis so I could pursue publication with it.

I don't believe I'm allowed to keep them from publishing it-- it's a graduation requirement to do so.

I could speak to my advisor about possibly getting it actually published. I hadn't thought of this.
