I am currently a freshman at Baylor University in Waco. Right now I don't know if I want to stay here next year or not. I originally came to this school because they have a pretty good premed program. But over the past semester I've realized this university doesn't really fit me, the people are a little too religious for me. Also, the university is going through a lot of crap with the president and they are getting into debt, which means tuition is going to go up even more. I have considered transferring to a school closer to my hometown, (Springfield, MO), like the University of Tulsa, Drury (small school in springfield) , or Mizzou. The Unversity of Tulsa is placed 90th on Usnews, and Baylor is only a few spots above it. I'm wondering if it will make much of a difference in getting into med school if I go to the University of Tulsa rather than staying at Baylor, assuming I still make good grades at both. thanks for responding.

Since you were paying up the wazzou at a private school, why not transfer to a sunny school, good looking women, great value and still make great grades. it doesnt matter where you go to undergrad, its where you go to med school.

besides uf has a fair amount of national merit scholars so we cant all be that bad academically. gainesville is a college town and you would feel right at home amongst the 40000 students

I don't know about Baylor's undergraduate reputation. But I don't think it will matter that much. The only concern that I have is that if some med schools think Baylor is much better than the school that you want to transfer into and the reason that you transferred is because you couldn't handle Baylor. BUT this won't be an issue if you are currently doing well academically at Baylor and you can articulate your reasons well for transferring if it ever came up during your interviews. Good luck with your decision.

I went to undergrad at Baylor, and I am currently in med school in Tulsa. I know some about TU and of course much about BU, so PM me if you have specific questions.

FYI: The Baylor degree is much more of a "shoe-in" for med school interviews than any of those above schools. I got an interview at some top schools even though I wasn't qualified for those programs.

Despite the rankings, I think Baylor is a much more recognized school (at least up here up North). I'm not saying it's better, just has more name recognition. However, if you're really not happy at Baylor, of course, you should look into transferring.

I heard the undergrad at Baylor was mostly right wing bible bangers...supposedly the med school is different from this, hopefully.

the two are entirely separate institutions.

Thanks for the replies, I believe I am probably going to stay here at Baylor. I've met a lot more people here that aren't psycho about Jesus and I think its going to turn out alright. Plus our crazy uber right-wing fundamentalist president just resigned today, which will make a lot of things better. 😀
