Hi!

So this is a bit of a silly situation, but I was catching up with one of my friends in undergrad, and he asked about medical school. I told him it was pretty tough, but doable. He was asking me what our daily schedule was. I told him it was X and Y, and mentioned that a typical semester was 25-30 credits. He burst out laughing, saying, that's what I've been stressing out about. He's in engineering and says he takes 19-21 credits, and he doesn't complex. He is going into pure engineering, nothing medical later. I tried telling him that the amount of credits doesn't necessarily equal the amount of material, but he didn't listen to me, saying my course work was a joke.Thoughts?

I mean, I think my undergraduate schedule was as tough as my medical school schedule except I didn't have to prep for step 1. So he might be right but even if he isn't, it doesn't matter.

Really? I wouldn;t consider medical school a joke

At least for the first two years, all we do is memorize and regurgitate. If you put the time in and grind hard, you'll be fine. If you got a decent MCAT score and got into med school, you can be assured that you have the raw brain power necessary - now it's just a question of finding the willpower to do enough Anki cards.

Remember what organic chemistry was like? Your buddy is taking 6 classes/semester, most of which are harder than that.

He got a C in undergrad chem. I just don't think you can compare the level of intensity and volume

No, you cant because you haven’t experienced a semester with his schedule. So what if he got a C? Some of the courses engineering majors have to take are HARD. P Chem and advanced calc stuff... and a lot more.

You’re judging him in the same way he judged you. Not worth fretting over.

Just to be clear, they're a freshman.

I don’t see why that matters? Well, other than the fact that he probably said what he did because his grades aren’t the best. It brings an ego boost.

Either way, you’ll never truly know and neither will he. He said what he said to make himself feel better about his performance by trying to point our how difficult engineering can be.

Usually the freshman coursework doesn't compare. And there's a difference in dedication and discipline for a professional school program vs. an undergraduate program. I definitely agree that engineering is probably more difficult conceptually with the upper level courses, but there's a reason why getting into professional school programs is difficult. Being told I'm just twiddling my thumbs all day is kinda insulting.

Lol imagine getting a C in pchem.

What a baddie.

I'd def say some of my upper level CS classes were harder than medical school. No step 1 tho...

Eh, idk about that. I have a couple friends who are bioengineering/chem engineering who would disagree. Most say orgo/another upper level science class is their most difficult class (except one who said it was upper level math).

All in all, the difficulty of engineering is overblown imo. The majority of my friends are engineering and I’ve seen them study extremely inefficiently/for a short amount of time for exams then complain at no end about how unfair/hard it is. When you can study like that and get passing grades it makes it seem like you’re doing everything you can, but you are never forced to acquire better study strategies, be more efficient, etc.

But I don’t think there’s any point in comparing it to med school or any other school for that matter. For engineering, premeds, and med students alike all you have to do to feel like an absolute ***** is talk to the physics people. Don’t even know what they’re saying 90% of the time.

I’m just happy I get to study what I like.

The number of credit hours seems to have nothing do with the difficulty or the material amount at my school. I'm no engineer so I cannot comment on the material difficulty, but I dont think people comprehend what the volume of medicine is unless they've done it.

You get insecure that easily? Who gives a f***? You'll make at least 4x the money he will make, so lean back and enjoy the good life.

Stop seeking external validation

Engineering can be pretty hard, especially the upper level classes.

My engineering Master's degree coursework was arguably harder than medical school coursework. Med school coursework was just a lot more material to cover.
But we're talking about a freshman/sophomore here! Man you guys are so lopsided. You'll say medical school is intense and is only for the healthiest people, and talk about how it exacerbated your mental health issues. You'll tell premeds, you don't know what it's like. But now all of the sudden, when an undergrad comes in, you're telling me it's a cake walk.

Grow thicker skin. If you’re upset by that just wait till someone actually calls you an idiot on the wards or a nurse chews you out for not knowing something simple in the OR. Welcome to the real world kid

Who cares what some random kid thinks?

And better things to concern yourself with. If this conversation you had really bothers you still, life will be a really rough road for you.

Just the title of this thread screams far left cry baby millenial Lol
Honestly, I've seen more complaining from the right wing but that's off topic

I’m not right wing at all, nice generalization though; frankly both sides are pretty stupid right now. But complaining about an 18 year old laughing at you shows more about you than anything.

Nobody will understand medicine unless they have significant exposure. And what do you want people to do? Bend a knee and praise how hard you work? I mean cmon grow up

Honestly my engineering buddies were the only ones working as long as I did in undergrad so maybe you’re a little out of touch with their requirements too? They don’t have as high of stakes in their grades but that stuff is tough. And their licensure exam book is 2 times the size of first aid

Your engineering friend's opinion on the difficulty of medical school has no influence on your life, nor does it have an influence on his life. In this situation, the solution was to just laugh along with him and move on. What's the point of having pissing contests with people pursuing non-medical careers? Do you seriously think you have something to prove to them?

You seem obsessed with having people agree with you. Seek help.

My son is in engineering, I start medical school this fall. At no point in our journeys are we going to waste time arguing over who has the more difficult course load. I’ve seen some of his homework and projects...I would be miserable in engineering at any difficulty level. He thinks anything medicine related is gross and says normal people don’t get excited about seeing the insides of other people. 😉 To each his own, I say.

Idk. Lol I amost guarantee if a premed came here and posted what he said, everyone here would have a fit

Yes, because pre-meds tend to act like they know about medicine (and its the field theyre actually going into, so they should know more than the layperson). Engineering however, has literally nothing to do with med school and the person has no reason to know better. Basically, I'd just cut and run from this thread because it just isn't going your way

So you do agree with me?

Man some of you guys won't fight for your people.
This isn’t a fight for people. It has less than zero effect on the profession as a whole. This is you being incredibly soft honestly.

We’re looking out for you for later in training when you’re gonna have to take a whole lot more than some random 18 year old engineering major laughing at you.

How would you like it if I said doctors are lazy and money hungry?
I believe I (and most others on here) would just walk away like mature adults because we know that it isn't true (mostly), but it isn't worth our time to try to change your mind on such a little issue that doesn't directly affect me in any way

OP, i have a feeling you have a long way ahead of you 🙂

Yep. I might have some thoughts about it, but I'd keep them to myself like 99% of the thoughts I have on a given day.

You know, like a grown up person.

Lol most of my friends back home crack jokes and laugh when they ask about my school and I explain. If they're your friends, that's what they're supposed to do. Laugh at you and push you a bit. They don't understand what you're going through nor do you understand what they're going through either.

Like others have said, you shouldn't let them downplaying your work mess with you. This isn't middle school.
