Imagine that you can write an undergraduate thesis on any topic, regardless of it's connection your major. I'm given this opportunity and I'm wondering how to narrow down a topic and whether or not such a thesis could have any sort of positive impact on MSTP admissions.
I was also wondering if it's common for people who volunteer in a lab to use part of their time and resources there to do research pertaining to their undergrad thesis? Would it be appropriate to ask somebody like a PI or a supervisor to be a second-reader or even principal reader? I'm particularly interested in immunology and pathology, but was hoping to find a way to connect these subjects with fine arts a little bit. Thanks a lot!!

Absolutely, you should do it. If your university works like mine, you'll be doing your undergrad thesis with a PI/supervisor, and they'll be available to give you tons of guidance and help you shape a project. And yes, people do use volunteering time in a lab to contribute to their thesis results (that's what I'll be doing starting this summer).
