I'm not in med school yet, but I like your questions. I feel like I'm in your shoes too, tryin to get an idea of what an average guy like myself can get into, get paid, and get a life.

If you want to get paid and get a life, go run a business. Or learn how to invest. Or better yet buy a Starbucks. Seriously...

Those in EM would argue that Emergency Medicine fits the bill. Of course, working 40% of weekends, nights, and holidays for the rest of your life may not be worth having numerous days off during the week to you.

Lifestyle: 35-40 hours/ week, no call. Ability to schedule shifts around vacations etc

Compensation: Midway between primary care specialties and surgical subspecialties. (But for much less time than both.) For me its not about the compensation, its about the compensation per hour.

Personal Level of Satisfaction: Depends on what satisfies you. In fact, I believe this should be the only factor you look at for residency selection. But if helping someone out on the worst day of their life brings you satisfaction, maybe EM is for you.

EM is a great field, but not for everyone. You have to enjoy working under pressure and be able to "multi-task" effectively. You need to be able to make quick decisions in the midst of uncertainty. Some people thrive in this kind of environment and others sink.

I think some under-rated specialties include PM&R, Pathology and RadOnc.
