oh and to the OP, why do hispanics, blacks, and native americans get a boost on med school apps? because you touch yourself at night.

All,

I would like to hear your opinion on this, why is it that "minorities" such as spanish and blacks get a bonus added to their application, yet minorities such as asians/east indians do not? T

First off, asians/east indians are widely accepted and have a strong history at medical schools. The number of MD applicants and MDs that consist of Latin/African American heritages are very low. Also, a majority of African Americans/Latinos come from poverty. Some might have even had a strong language barrier. As for International students, China has some very respectable institutions and Latin American/African American institutions can't even compare. Before you reply to this, go google up some statistics and this topic will die out just like the rest.

I'm sorry what? ESPN = rtards?!?!? I'm going to quote something now that really, really relates to you, and I think you should really take the message into consideration:

So if my friend is Jamaican and always reminds me that she is in fact not "African American" what would she put down when applying to medical school? Are only African Americans considered URMs or are the other black ethnicities considered an URM also?
You can put WHATEVER you want. It's "self identified". Nobody checks. How could they? There are no blood tests, no geneological records to submit. You are what you identify yourself to be. (ok, except for Native American... there is official tribal affiliation.)

Is she a white, black, or hispanic Jamiacan? Or a mix? Pick the one that she is closest to, would give her the best advantage, and for which she has meaningful volunteer and community experience.

AMCAS has two categories: Race and Ethnicity. Clearly, race would be "black". Ethnicity might be more difficult to define as I can't remember the exact terminology used on the app. Is she an American citizen or International student? If international, then she is not "American" and thus cannot be African-American, but merely "African" or "black". If Jamaican-American, she fits under the larger umbrella of African-American or Hispanic-American (assuming she isn't non-spanish white, of course). A black person who is also an American is by definition an African-American because their ancestors came from Africa (even if they stopped at Jamaica along the way) and they are now American.

The problem with people who critique affirmative action is that they often look at the present and the individual effects it has on each person. Of course it seems unfair when a more qualified person is replaced by someone with less qualifications, but you have to look at the long term and the effect it has on society as a whole. When all male Universities began integrating women into the student body (because they had gained equal status...etc), many of the women were less qualified than the male applicants (gpa and entrance exams), and of course at the time many considered that unfair. But look at what those earlier actions have done today. Women are now highly represented and are doing better than many of their male counterparts....anyone complaining now?....Maybe in 30 or so years, the less qualified URM applicants are going to be paving the way for future URM applicants who will be much more qualified and make societey as a whole a lot better off...

How stupid you are to think that medical schools are robotic entities who scroll through applications like a Scantron(R) machine, searching for a specific race. Once said race is equal to a defined variable (African America, Native American, etc.) then grant admission to said applicant.

If your infantile logic were nearly half as solid as your apparent knowledge of male sports figures, you could simply infer from the admissions statistics that more URMs get denied admissions than are admitted.

Go back to watching ESPN. Your IQ is much more aligned with that audience.

not be admitted to medical school. Why don't you answer the question that I posed instead of insulting those of us who love ESPN. By the way, ESPN covers the Women's Golf Tour (which I confess I never watch unless that hot chick with the short shorts is playing, I think she is from Sweden, but I love it when she bends over to putt!)

While I don't wish to feed the nonsense, you are mistaken if you don't believe that sports don't seek out minorities...

Sports are driven by financial interest. That being said, sports teams with "face time" (most except football because they wear helmets), try to add diversity as a way to increase their fan base.

Why do you think the Yankees signed Hideki Matsui? Sure, he's good, but there are a lot of latinos or blacks who are better.

Why did the rockets sign Yao Ming? Sure he's 7'4" but he's made the Rockets an INTERNATIONAL team.

Why are there white guys in the NBA at all? It would be pretty safe to say that a lot of them could and should be replaced with a black player. BUT there are more white NBA fans than anything else and almost ALL of those who buy tickets are white.

Basically, this is to say that organizations seek to serve and expand their base. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but that's just the way it is.

And let's be serious. I've been to four medical schools and I asked how many african americans were in the first year class. The average was 3. Get over it...

so you are sayin that yao ming and dirk nowitzki are not better than or equal to black players? ur saying suzuki ichiro is not one of the best baseball players out there regardless of race? i'm pretty sure they got picked because they are damn good

i wished that one day, mexicans can get into HMS cause they are accomplished, not because mexico is a poor country

Tell me about it! Every rejection I've gotten, I've shaken my fist at the sky and said, "Those damn SPANIARDS!!!"

i do that too... all the time. in fact, i do that to all the races in this world (i confess that usually take up my whole day). what can i say, i'm a hater.

Why do people bitch about this everyday.

Its not necessarily to give URMs an advantage they wouldn't have otherwise. A big part of it is to give that particular community a doctor they can relate to. If a black patient would rather have a black doctor then they should be allowed to. Even if that means they'd rather have a black doctor with a 26 MCAT and a 3.0GPA.

Don't think about it as about the premeds. Think of it being about the patients. And stop being so selfish. You guys are going to be doctors soon - you should care about the patients more than yourselves.

You know...my mother was born in 1958 in Brooklyn, New York; if she had been born at that same time in Maryland, just 4 hours away, there would be only 1 hospital in the state that she could be born at because she was black. Now I"m sure my mom was born around the same time alot of your parents were born. Sometimes we like to think that all this racism and oppression was centuries ago, but it literally just ended. That being said, AA is here to stay, where people consider it fair or not. To the OP, Asians get accepted at a crazy rate. Just look at the ratio of Asians in some of the California schools, it would blow your mind. I"ve interviewed at 2 majority medical schools, Maryland and Vanderbilt, and at both I was the only black person there. Where are all the black people that are trying to steal your spot? They really aren't there. In 2001, Vanderbilt only had like 4 blacks in their entering class. Its gotten better, but still the point is that there really aren't any blacks in medical school. But your mind won't change, so I guess there really isn't any purpose in still typing. There is no way to discuss AA on SDN with starting some piss fight. Give it up.

All,

I would like to hear your opinion on this, why is it that "minorities" such as spanish and blacks get a bonus added to their application, yet minorities such as asians/east indians do not? This to me seems blatantly unfair. If anything, preference should be given to those with economic circumstances, but it seems that it is not fair to base it on race. It is inconsistent to let only certain minorities in, what makes latino or blacks gain preference over asians or east indians???

The case everyone says is oh, they are underrepresented in the field, so what? Do you think that because in sports asians/east indians are underrepresented, that they should be allowed into playing sports just because there are few of them? This would never be allowed in the sports world, which are jobs of a very comptetitive nature, why is it allowed in the academic world, where becoming a doctor is equally comptetitive?

oooooooooooooooooooooooooo pobre sita...quieres una baba

i wished that one day, mexicans can get into HMS cause they are accomplished, not because mexico is a poor country

Hey, this mexican got a 37 on the MCAT. And has a 3.7 GPA. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

To the OP...I think the worst misconception that people have about affirmative action is to think of it as the golden ticket in terms of life...as if being hispanic automatically got me in everywhere. Trust me, I don't get into places by flashing my green card. In fact, it's quite the opposite. To the person that used the example of Tiger wood's unborn child, uh, let's think that out. His case applies to 0.000001% of the population.

Ultimately, as most of the people in this forum, I think that AA is somewhat flawed. But I take it to be a recognition that being a minority in an academic setting is, regardless of what people say, a difficult transition. Picture it this way: You're a white guy, and you get dropped off in the middle of a room full of black people. Of course, they're not attacking you, or bothering you and they may be friendly, but it would take a little time to adjust, to thrive and to excel. This is obviously a poor example...but hey, let's work on that empathy thing and try on someone else's shoes for size.

Buddy, considering you 'hate this thread', why did you respond? You don't have to read any of it, nor do you have to respond, but you do, and its because you have a strong opinion on it, and cant stand when someone else disagrees with you. Your statement was completely dumb, if you dont like the thread then dont read.

Does Tiger Woods kid get preferential treatment in the medical school admissions process? Just answer the goddamn question! Should Tiger Woods kid get preferential treatment solely (I mean solely) because of his racial background? Can someone please just answer this very specific question without insulting me because I like ESPN and Swedish girl golfers who wear short shorts and look good bending over a putt.

Yes, he will and should get preferential treatment.

There are then that many more patients who can be treated by someone of their own race, whom they may be able to relate to better than a white doctor. Think of it as about the patients, not the med students.

I respect that. I don't know if Tiger's kid will be working in the inner city but perhaps he will. But putting this issue in the perspective of the patients rather than the med students..... your response makes sense. We definitely need more doctors of color and we also need more Swedish women golfers for guys who like to watch women's golf on ESPN.

Exactly! Now go watch some golfers in short shorts (hopefully the women do that more often than the men)!!

This is a stupid question. Regardless of his race, he's doing to get preferential treatment because he's famous.

Of course he gets preferential treatment for being black. AA is based on race. Surely you knew this answer?

Should he? Well, if you're asking from a philosphical, perfect-world perspective, then I'd say "no" he should not. I say this becuase chances are he'd work in Beverly Hills, right? (that's your point, I presume)

You're pointing out the obvious flaw with AA. But, realize that no system will be perfect and outlayers will always slip through the cracks. AA is just about the ONLY measure our govt or med schools have taken to address the problem of lower quality or lack of access to health care for many minority communities. It may be flawed, but it is not 100% flawed; a greater good for society is addressed in a small way. As long as it's the only thing we've got going, it's better than nothing. Don't get mad at URMs for making use of the system. Get mad at politicians for calling it quits after making one token effort.

so you are sayin that yao ming and dirk nowitzki are not better than or equal to black players? ur saying suzuki ichiro is not one of the best baseball players out there regardless of race? i'm pretty sure they got picked because they are damn good

i wished that one day, mexicans can get into HMS cause they are accomplished, not because mexico is a poor country

I didn't say any of those things. However, there are numerous big men who are just as good as yao ming but they don't add value to the organization from a marketing perspective.

Ichiro is good, but I'm sure there are latin american players who are just as good. All things being equal, you want to seek out people who extend your market share.

Ichiro is good, but there are numerous latin american players who are just as good... and honestly, as someone who played d1 basketball... Yao ming sucks.

FALSE...how many other centers average about 24-12 after all star break last season? please name the numerous big men as good as him
thanks

[Jasmine26: that sucks admission shouldnt be based on your skin color.
Im not black, but African haha can I be considered a minority?

QUOTE=Writer1985;4309218]Oh, you'd count. The system supposedly adjusts for disadvantaged backgrounds, but it's so flawed because people twist it any way they can to get an edge. I know so many people who identified themselves as Native American on college and med applications, just because back in the 1700s they have some Cherokee ancestor. (Reminds me of a Supreme Court case a few years after Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896 that said that a person was legally black if they had at least 1/32nd African blood or something insane like that).

Everyone knows AA is profoundly messed up and needs serious overhaul, but no one is willing to go beyond complaining and actually fix things. Unless you're going to spearhead a movement to tear down the current AA methodology and start afresh, just suck it up, work hard, and accept responsibility for your own successes and failures.[/QUOTE]

Not true. If you aren't a U.S citizen, you are NOT considered a URM, but as an international student.

guys, of course tiger's hypothetical kid will get preferential treatment in the process. if he didnt get in, his dad would buy the damn med school or let the dean of admissions wear one of his green jackets for a day.

i mean come on!

have you guys ever thought of a wacky parallel universe where the native americans went accross the ocean and discovered europeans and took their land... .and so on... and so on... until we end up in the parallel present... where we would be discussing the same URMsh1t but with a slight slant.... people would be saying "i cant wait till one day when a white kid finally gets a 34 on the mcat and deserves his seat instead of getting all his privileges and getting in with subpar numbers"....

I will take the wrap, and say sorry i introduced this thread, as it has spurred mostly hateful comments, most the posts don't adress the issue and are of hateful things between people, and has been truly of little use. There were some people who actually brought up some nice points about why it exists, and there were some nice points for why it shouldn't exist.

However, SDN is not a place to talk about something like this. The emotions run high on this, and i realize it.

I started this thread, with a belief, not attacking any member on here, yet instead of having arguments about why it should be, or why it shouldnt be, it was mostly personal attacks. Im being a man, and not responding anymore, and you all should to, considering i started this thread.

Personally i hope in my time, preference for minorities is overturned, and preference will solely be based on economic status and upbringing.

Personally I hope in my time, economic status won't be heavily tied to minority status. And when that happens, then let's chat about the "bonus" for URMs.

i personally enjoy the festivities. but yea, whoever has an opinion to begin with sticks with that opinion regardless of what info is exchanged.

that sucks admission shouldnt be based on your skin color.
Im not black, but African haha can I be considered a minority?

Sure. I know egyptian people who put down on their application that they are "african american" and are treated as URM in the admissions process. Although it is technically correct in this case (and plenty of people get away with this kind of thing), the purpose of URM status in admissions isn't exactly fulfilled the way it was meant to be.

I think Ned's last post was the que for this thread to die...

I am not sure why you expected "intelligent" responses from people. This topic is one that transcends all levels of academia and has been discussed ad nauseum. Why would you expect anything but sarcasm? Would you have made the same remarks if some of those personal attacks were not directed at you, but rather at those who support the application of some of aa policies (and progression towards a more complete strategy to improving representation)?

My only direct response to your argument is that what you presented as a problem represents a one dimensional approach to the entire issue...Unfortunately, discussing this issue is useless at this point.

Be blessed...get over it and keep chugging.

no no no NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!

Ned, there are plenty of threads out there on this subject, and you can read all about it and chances are there's not even any need for you to post what you think, since probably your view point has been posted 10 times by others on this forum.

Please we went SO long without an AA thread mucking up the board. It's time for interviews and acceptances, please don't gripe about things that won't change your life drastically. AA threads don't do anything except start fights between members. DONT DO IT! LET THIS THREAD DIE IN PEACE!

Haha - and I always come crawling back into it but I too, have no more to say. Seriously, there's no other way for them to address their problems - our local society is based on a system that is fcked up because our own human nature is fcked up. The international society is just our local societies at a higher level - it's also fcked up if you've been following current events.

Let's face it - our human race can't get over our flaws and never will. We have so much potential - but we are so pathetic and weak at the same time.

From what I have heard from some people is that medical schools will compare two students with almost the exact same stats (MCAT scores and GPA scores) and the one who can provide more diversity to the school (be it because of his or her race) will have the upper hand. If this is true then people are not admitted regardless of their stats. Most schools have certain policies (rules) as to how low is too low regardless of race.

For example, there is a white guy Stats: GPA 3.7 MCAT 26 and a hispanic female with a GPA 3.7 and MCAT 26. Now both of there stats are so so in my opinion but the hispanic female has one up on the white guy so maybe she will get in. But it is not because she is less qualified individual stats wise because you can see that both individuals have the same stats.

So I really hope peopl would stop generalizing when they say less qualified minorites are getting in. I know what the numbers say but what do numbers really mean. It is just a way to pick people out of a stack of other people. MCAT nor GPA can control your destiny and how great of a doctor you are going to be. The person decides that.

I just hope we as a community of premeds and med students (if any are on this thread) try not to jump to conclusions when you see a minority medical student. I hope you don't automatically think they are unqualified and only got in because of affirmative action. I know of white medical students who got into medical school with low MCAT scores (25, 26, 27).

*The numbers don't make you --- the character does.*

so you are sayin that yao ming and dirk nowitzki are not better than or equal to black players? ur saying suzuki ichiro is not one of the best baseball players out there regardless of race? i'm pretty sure they got picked because they are damn good

i wished that one day, mexicans can get into HMS cause they are accomplished, not because mexico is a poor country

A better analogy is JS Park going to Manchester United. Is he a good player? yup. was he really filling a major hole at ManU? not really.

ManU just saw how Park made PSV one of the most popular European Clubs in Korea and decided to cash in on that fact...

Wow, guys, you cut to the serious ugly in record time.

doctajay, your post was the highlight of the thread and I do hope you and others save it to be trotted out as needed.

Since the OP is no longer interested in keeping the thread open, and since the horse has been beaten to an extremely gooey, sitcky, dang-near protoplasmic pulp by now, this thread is closed.

For future reference, anyone who wants to talk about AA/URM issues in an extremely-lightly-moderated enviroment is more than welcome to take it to the Everyone forum over in the Lounge, which is where highly emotionalize political discussions are probably best suited.

If you want to talk about it here, you're going to have to refrain from insults and namecalling.
