Underserved

*edit jilli you beat me to it

when talking about serving less fortunate populations ive seen people say underserved and undeserved which one is correct or do both work?

when have you ever seen undeserved used to describe an underprivileged poulation?

deserve = to merit, be qualified for, or have a claim to
un + deserve = poor people?

If you use dictionary.com you can get a straight answer without the sass in the future

If you truly cannot see the difference, or why undeserved might make some people think you are anti-poor, then go with the phrase "less fortunate" you used in your inquiry.

just say "populations with unmet need" and you can avoid confusion altogther.

Both work, but undeserved is preferred. 😉

Random gramatical sidenote: Underserved is an adjective when used like "the underserved heroin junkie," but does saying "the underserved." make it a noun? Ie: "I really hate the smell of the underserved."

"The Emory Regional Training Center for Family Planning at Grady Hospital not only trains nurses for practice in medically undeserved areas, but also conducts one of largerst continuing education programs in the country."

this is from the emory school of medicine website it is used like this on a lot of other school of medicine websites as well

"Research and clinical experience in primary medical care. Participation in project relating to health care delivery, including medical audit, study of organization of health services, and problems of undeserved populations or other subject to be determined. Department faculty members will act as advisors for the project and will arrange clinical experience. Exchange with similar program in other institutions is possible."

So apparently Emory thinks its nurses are too good for the poor. But given the typo in largest, are you sure you copied it correctly?

those are either typos or you're forging them. this is really a no-brainer.

no, really. think about it.

Definitely a typo or the person writing that is a little confused. "Undeserved" is not a correct alternative to "underserved," "underprivileged," etc.

why would i forge it? obviously i had a reason for this question because i read it in many places i can give you URLs if you want.

i understand now that they are probably typos thanks for your help but if you look up school of medicine undeserved population in yahoo or google you'll find a significant amount of these typos

 103,000 hits for "school of medicine undeserved population."

But at least Google has enough sense to ask if you meant "underserved" instead.

Where's that guy interested in preventative medicine?

Maybe it's not a typo! Maybe Emory prefers superlative beer!

Meh. Most of the underserved are undeserved anyway.
