I know this comparison has been done in past years, however I'd like to have a little more recent insight into these great schools! I've already been accepted to UNECOM and have an interview at NYITCOM soon.

Specifically:
How many students take the USMLE on average from each class/ is it encouraged ?
Reputation?
Best chance to match first time/ get into great residencies?
Overall student feeling regarding curriculum/ faculty support?

Thanks in advance!!

NYCOM is well-established and well known in the NY area. It has a strong reputation and is a good choice, especially if you plan to stay in that area. The affiliations are also very good.

I don't know if NYCOM encourages the steps but students who want to become more competitive should take the step in general.

The curriculum is changing. You'll have to ask the current students about that.

I know you wanted a fresh perspective, but start with ShyRem's on this thread.

Also, if you want to take the usmle, JUST DO IT (Nike). Both have fine reputations. When I visited UNECOM it seemed like they REALLY like OMM. As far as residencies, it all depends on whether you want to match in the New England area or the NYC area. Reputations from the perspective of MD residencies for DO schools seem to be more regional than MD schools. Both markets have top of the line residency programs nearby. Both markets have top tier med schools with students aiming for those coveted residency spots.

One thing I am curious about: how saturated is the state of NY with FMG (Ross/SGU/AUC etc.) for 3rd and 4th year rotations since the state medical board has contracts with some of the schools? Does MA or ME have this problem?

Food for thought.

It honestly depends on whether or not you want to practice in NY. NYIT is great, I have a couple of friends who are currently in NYIT and they highly recommend it. The doctor I shadowed also went to NYIT and has said great things about the school. NYIT is also very big on specializing, I think about 55% of the students end up specializing, also the other thread posted here was from 2 years ago and it was during that time that NYCOM had a terrible administration. NYIT got a new dean in 2013, who is doing great things to NYCOM. NYIT is also only 30 minutes away from the city. Good luck with your decision!

Thank you to everyone for their responses!

I'm looking into primary care with a sports medicine fellowship after, I've heard that fellowships may be easier to get with an MD residency? Anyone that can confirm or correct me on this?
