unexpected rejection

My Loyola interviewer told me that I was their "tuba player" this year (he was making a reference to my non-trad lawyer background). Back in the admin office, the other interviewee heard the secretary tell me that she heard that I was their tuba player. So, while we were on our tour of the school later, the other interviewee leaned in and whispered (are you really a tuba player)? Priceless.

Phoenix aka PTP ("Proud Tuba Player")

I've never heard that expression either. What exactly does it mean? Evidentally, a lot of schools think you will be their tuba player this year.

Hah! Thanks. And I had never heard it either. But basically, I think what he was trying to say is that the tuba player is different from every other musician in the orchestra, and adds something very different than everyone else. And that you can't have a good orchestra without one. Something like that. I talked to my friend at Loyola, and she interviewed with the same interviewer last year, who also told her she was the tuba player. (She's also a non-trad).

so i just got my mail from sat ... rejected from dartmouth ...

this process is sooooooooo random ... i mean come on ... i've gotten some really great interviews ... and then no love from dartmouth ... arg!!!!

dude, you got some awesome interviews... many which I haven't yet. However, I did get an interview from dartmouth, but I'm planning on withdrawing. It does seem really random...our stats are almost the same (and i'm not a juggler)

You are putting too much on the objective. Two people with identical numbers can be regarded by schools as different as night and day if the essays, LORs, ECs, experiences, etc are different. At EVERY med school there will be people in the reject pile with numerical stats identical or higher than those who actually end up getting accepted. It's not random, nor unexpected, but the emphasis on certain things tends to be different than number hounds would like to assume.
