Unique extracurriculars

"Sir, I'm not just a run of the mill college student who pursues certain things because that is what I think that you guys want to see. I could have spent the majority of my time tutoring, being part of school clubs, or even getting on the student government, but I just didn't want to sir. There are things that I want in life, and right now these things are medical school, and pursuing my hobbies to my upmost potential. My hobbies aren't just academic, but they cover a wide range of areas."
And you sound pretty condescending and arrogant too. You'll make a great surgeon, eh? 😎

You better still list that as an accomplishment. High School or not, it will only help you...

If you've been out of high school for 10 years, forget about it though...

be sure to have "something" for each break from school (summers & other periods of 3 months or more when you weren't taking classes), even if it is a non-med related job.

Eagle Scout does impress some adcoms but isn't it usually accomplished in HS? If you think that it was a formative experience, put it in your PS. A side note, it seems that every Mormon guy applying to med school is an Eagle Scout so it isn't very distinguishing.

Poster prizes: impressive.
R.A. in a dorm: impressive. (you've learned & used lots of "people" skills)
Sports: unless it's varsity, lump it together and elaborate in the description; the same goes for playing a musical intrument or writing music, poetry, or prose.

Generally, one should not include H.S. activities on the AMCAS although some applicants do sneak a few items in there such as becoming an Eagle Scout our winning the Intel Science Prize (major accomplishments). You should have done enough in college (and beyond, if applicable) to fill out the EC section of the AMCAS.

What would you consider unique extracurriculars for a premed?

Ranger Challenge...that's what I did and I got in! (yes I also volunteered and worked, but RC was a lot of fun! HOOAH!)

CMismo

See, now this is what I'm talking about right here...

How'd you do?

Here's the great part:

I could care less!!!

Hahaha!!!

How about that?

Besides, who says I want to be a surgeon?

Anyways, the point of what I posted is to show that I am an individual who has his own likes/dislikes, I'm not 20 years old and doing things because my older brother did them and got in to med school, and I pursue life with both hands on the wheel...

You say they don't want unique students all you want, but I'm counting on having been to just about 20 foreign countries, been involved militarily in 3 of them, and politically in 1 of them (by politically I mean an active role in what's going on, and not just acting as a trigger puller)...

So, say what you want, but I kinda know what's up...

that guy went in to a MD/PhD program at a top school 😛 and no, he got LOR from the two before Clinton. i bet he just got secretaries to write the letters and the prezs to sign them. i don't think you can get better LORs than those 🙂

Man, that's cool...

I'll bet that guy was like, "Wait til they read these..."

Probably laughing hysterically as he mailed his package off...

Could or couldn't?

I didn't say unique was a bad thing - just that it's not that adcoms need every student to be cut out of a fresh mold.

1. They both go hand in hand in the context to which they're given...

2. I know man. I'm not disputing that at all. All I'm saying (and yeah, it did look arrogant the way it was posted, and I wouldn't come out and say that to someone because it does look cocky, but I do want to be seen as a unique individual that can relate to many different types of people) is that I want to be seen as someone with a wide array of experience...

I know too many people that live their lives by what they think the adcoms want to see...

And don't get me wrong, I am NOT against academic pursuits as an EC. Hell, if I was against that I wouldn't be on these boards as a premed student...

Should I list party/club promoter as one of my EC’s? Well actually I’m a partner and the director of promotions for a party production company.
