Univ. of Minnesota Entering Class of 2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I recently got an invitation to interview on March 13th so--assuming that the date wasn't a typo!--they're actually opening up an additional Friday.

ugg I can't believe they opened up another interview date. I assuming thats bad for my ranked waitlisted ass.

Waiting so patiently since the February 6th date. I was trying to avoid thinking about it, but now I'll start worrying about the contents of my mailbox! 😳

I just got an invite for the March 13th date. I thought the last day for interviews was the 6th. Oh well. I am excited and glad I get the opportunity to go. Thank god for credit cards. It's the only way I am affording the travel to the interviews.

You are not the only one!😕 I kept going home the last 2 days for lunch which I never do, just to check the mail.....hope it all works out...I know the feeling...Am guessing sometime today or tomorrow depending on where you are...good luck:xf:

I just got accepted to the Minneapolis campus. I am really happy because I was on the ranked waitlist last year and even though #43 on the list made it, I was just a bit lower still on the list. (priority wise)

Anyway, I am relieved because this was the only school I had applied to. Hope the other interviewees are also getting the good news today. I interviewed at the Duluth location. Good luck to the girl with the broken pearl necklace 🙂

Congratulations Pharm08. Looking forward to seeing you in the fall.

Congrats! Unfortunately, no news in the mail for me as of today. Maybe tomorrow an envelope will be coming my way!

I just received my acceptance packet in the mail today for the Twin Cities!! WOOHOO!!

I just wanted to say hi to my fellow Class of 2013 students.

Feel free to contact me if you want to chat or have questions. I did undergrad and 2 years of grad school at the U. I've been here for awhile now!

I know the year before me they went through 50 people on the waitlist, however, last year they went through less than that. If I were to guess I would say closer to 40. I know you have to wait long (Trust me it sucks) but there is still a great chance you get in. It was worth the wait!

It was 43 to be exact. One of the lowest amounts they've taken off of the list. I know this because I was 45th last year. Talk about being SO close. I just got my acceptance today though, so it makes it all worth it!!

I know exactly how you feel Pharmacygopher. I went through the same thing last year. Well, at least we made it now. This will be a second career for me and I am really excited to get started.

Hey congratulations! I will be in your class next year! 👍 Since you've been in the area for a while do you have any recommendations for apartments? I've looked at Dinnaken properties and some places around Dinkytown but that's about it so far.

Thank you and congrats to you as well! I've lived in University Village apartments and University Commons apartments. UV was ok, decent apartments for the price. UC was a lot of fun! They have a workout facility + hot tub + BBQ. They are NOT quiet though. Lots of partying going on. Can be distracting if you want/need to be studying. They are expensive as well. I've lived in a duplex in Dinkytown for almost 3 years now and love it. It can be noisy at times because it is a party area. The women that lives below me is quiet. It's fun, close to campus, and close to a lot of night life and establishments. It's great.

My roommate is a current 3rd year pharmacy student and will probably be moving out when he goes for rotations. So, I may be looking for a roommate next year people. Give me a shout if anyone is interested and we'll see how things shake out.

I also go to interview March 13 morning session.
I figured out only 3% seats are left.
I cant count what % chance I would have.
Any Ideas?

I'm on the ranked waitlist. I interviewed back in November. Does anybody know if people who interviewed earlier have better chance to be ranked higher on the waitlist?

No they don't. I believe that they should though. I interviewed in October last year and still ended up 45th on the list.

I don't think interviewing earlier is any advantage. Based on my own experience, I believe that it all depends on your overall application. I did not get a good rank position last year (and I also interviewed in Nov 2007). There's not much different in my application this year except that I completed all the pre-reqs that I had listed under planned. The majority of people on the ranked waitlist do get in usually so you have a good chance.

Hello, congratulations to you all! when did you guys interview?

The people that are getting notices of acceptance this week all interviewed on 2/6 (I am assuming). It looks like the remaining three interview dates (2/20, 3/6, 3/13) have 36% of spots available in Minneapolis and 49% in Duluth. I know last year I was told that some people from the last interview date who would normally have been admitted were placed at the top of the ranked waitlist after they had already given out all the spots. I think this is why they only made it to #43 on the waitlist before the start of classes.

Thanks, I interviewd on 2/20 so I should hear something back in about 2 weeks...hope to see you guys in Fall!

Looks like more waiting for me - ranked waitlist.

Congrats to everyone getting in! For those of you on the ranked waitlist.....don't worry. I know the wait sucks, however, you are still in a good position. Hang on!

Did any of you who got accepted receive financial aid package yet (that is if you have already submitted fafsa) ?
I just would like to know how long the financial aid process takes once you are accepted.

I actually got accepted to other schools but I really would like to go to Minnesota if Minnesota wants me (I'm on ranked waitlist). But at this point financial aid is really important for me (I'm very worried) since I'll be quitting my current full time job and I have to pay out-of state tuition.

Dilemma ...😎

I wouldn't expect to hear something about financial aid until at least July. I would submit your FAFSA here right away though. At least they have your information early on. My friend, that is already in pharmacy school here, never fills his out until the last minute (August) and still receives plenty of aid (outstate tuition) every year. I wouldn't worry about it. But call the financial aid office if you have questions. 1-800-400-8636 if you live outside the metro.

I just saw they've updated their Admissions' page. Has anyone from 2/20 interview heard anything back?

Hi Biomedical,

I interviewed in Duluth on 02/20. I haven't heard anything. I called the College of Pharmacy and told me to expect to hear early next week.

I interviewed on 2/20 in Minneapolis and just got accepted! I'll be attending as I didn't apply anywhere else. haha

Congratulations JMUofM....where do you live? Did you receive the acceptance letter today?

I live in Minneapolis and I recieved my letter on Friday...I know they were sent from Duluth on Thursday.

I'm in!!! I also interviewed on 2/20 and heard back a few days ago.

I saw some posts about housing...when do most people figure out where they're going to live? Will they have a lot fewer options if I start looking in June-ish?

3 years ago (last time I needed to look for housing), I didn't start looking for a place until late July or early August and found a place close to campus I liked within a week or so. I'm not saying wait until the end, but it's feasible.

Did anyone ask if the College of Pharmacy will put together a list or site for accepted students to look for housing? Or did they say just use housing.umn.edu?? I'm looking for a new roommate and would prefer a 1st or 2nd year pharmacy student.

P.S. Congrats on your acceptance - jd

Finding housing in Minneapolis can be tough. I was waitlisted at first so I wasn't able to start looking until about June. I live at the Phi Delta Chi house (A professional Pharmacy Fraternity) currently and will be living here for next year as well. The house has 14 people with everyone getting their own room. The rent if you are a phi Delta Chi member is $310 a month which includes heat, electric, parking spot and everything else. The house is about 15 min walk from the pharmacy building and is located right in Dinkytown (Student housing area that has many food places and many other places to have fun). Its a pretty cool place. Other than this specific case normal housing is about $500 a month or more. Good luck to you all!

Here is part of an email I received the Peter Haeg, Director of Student Services, yesterday regarding housing.

Housing: The Office of Student Services has established a list of other pharmacy students who have rooms available or are also looking for housing. Email [email protected] to be added to the list. You may also contact the University of Minnesota's housing Web sites for on-campus or off-campus housing at http://www.housing.umn.edu or http://rentals.tc.umn.edu.

Maybe I'll be joining you all in September! I was accepted back in Nov. for Twin Cities. Just waiting to hear from my state school.
I'm a little nervous about finding housing in an unfamiliar city, and won't be able to come look at anything until late June/July (I'll have to fly in for just a weekend I guess). I'm hoping to find an area that is convenient (on a bus line or walking distance), quiet, and hopefully has other Pharmacy students nearby to study with. I guess once I decide I'll get on the OSS list for housing, too.

I have a question. Don't know if anyone can answer it but I got an email tonight that said they were done looking at applications and will now start ranking the waitlist. I also noticed that there were around 20% of spots open in the twin cities and something like 39% open at duluth. Does this mean they are going to directly take in students from the ranked waitlist to fill these spots? I also think the March 6th acceptances have been updated as the numbers were updated on the 30th. Is it true there are still that many spots left even before people start turning down acceptances? I was thinking that the availablility of spots might help move the waitlist quicker or increase my odds of getting accepted off of it. Anyone have any ideas or an inside perspective?

I am also on the ranked waitlist and received an email yesterday. My question is.. do they notify your position on the waitlist first (if they do how? by email? ) and then give out acceptances later? Do they do this as they rank the applicants or do they notify all the applicants at the same time? I'm totally not familiar with this process. Does anybody know?

If that is true, that would be awesome news for people lower on the waitlist! If those numbers are accurate and up to date, that could very well be the case. That is not how it happened last year.

They notified us by mail last year in mid to late April. You know your exact ranking. They just go right down the list based on campus selection. You can be accepted anywhere from late April through Labor Day. Last year they sent out periodic email updates to where they were in the waitlist.

😍 I got my acceptance last week. I am so excited. U of MN is such a great school with lots of opportunities. I love the program. Now I have two great choices. I am not sure if I will be going there though. Most likely I'll be going to UCSF. So those on the waitlist can have my spot. I've got a few days to make my final decision. It's good to have choices.👍

Is there anyone else who interviewed on March 13th that has gotten their acceptance yet?

Has anyone on the ranked waitlist received their ranking yet?

The update I got said they are in the process of ranking the waitlist right now. I think its still gonna be towards the end of april when we get the rankings.

It was the middle of April when I received my ranking for the waitlist, but don't worry it will come soon!

Also I want to let people know that if you are looking for housing we will have 4-5 rooms opening up at the Phi Delta Chi house for next year. I posted about it earlier if you want to know a little about it. Both guys and girls live at the house, clean, pharmacy students, cheap, great location. Let me know if you want more information!

Good luck everyone

I was on the ranked waitlist and I just received a call telling me I had been accepted. I was never actually given a waitlist number, so I'm sure they're working through the logistics now.

One of you got my spot; I turned them down this morning. I'm heading off to graduate school instead. Go to Minnesota and make kick-ass pharmacists, ya'll.
