Someone I know who's going to USC dental school told me he just had to write an essay instead of interviewing.

This really surprised me. How are universities supposed to properly vet candidates if there's no 1-on-1 face time?

Do some universities have both? Are there any other universities that only have you write essays without interviews?

Thanks!

I suppose schools can do as they wish, but according to the mother book, interviews are mandatory at every US school with Creighton being the only exception.

So the essay is just something extra on top of the interview then?

The guy I spoke to seemed to imply that all he had to do was write an essay at USC though without an interview.

NYU can accept students without interviewing them.

The USC essay is nothing to worry about. It's a really general topic like describing an important event in your life. You are given the prompt at the very beginning of the day in a huge packet and you have like 4 hours to brainstorm before you are scheduled to write it. You are then given 15 minutes to write it, so you aren't expected to write much.

Temple (starting last year) didn't do interviews.

They put you in front of a camera for 3-5 minutes and you free-style to adcoms why you want dentistry and their school.

That would seem kind of weird to me. I would not have expected that.

well.... you know about it ahead of time. They send you a secondary via email. You fill it out (its a Word.doc) and print it, and bring it with you to the interview day. The 2ndary tells you of the video, and what they want you to talk about.

yep dentalworks is right. I had a ball at the Temple interview to be honest even though I was almost not going to do the interview. Glad I did though since I'm now going there.

And it is a lot less stressful when you know you're not going to get grilled by an interviewer.

I think I'd enjoy that. I'm not so sure about these multiple mini-interview things I've heard about.

Judging from your scores... I bet you'll be one of the 25 recipients of the scholarship from temple 👍

Yep U of Mich does that.... It was the BEST interview I have ever done. You literally meet 10 new people and you have like 8 minutes with each. Good times, they were very friendly, and.... it was just a good time.

I really liked all my interviews lol

Marquette and Midwestern-IL both do multiple interviews as well. Marquette's was enjoyable since everyone I interviewed with was quite nice. I only heard of the MWIL one and that the topics given were quite vague.

And DW, I was told I would be receiving the outstanding scholarship award. Too bad it's for first year's only.

Exactly, this is ******ed. I believe Temple gave the list of questions to the interviewees prior to the day of the visit. Thus, everyone had rehearsed answers with the best actors/actresses excelling in this format.

I have a classmate whose cousin, a 4.0 student with 30 DAT score, received this scholarship but it wasn't as much as you would think.

Interesting thing is my classmate slams his cousin claiming that he has no social skills and will become a horrible dentist someday despite being an academic genius.

Go figure...

not really.... its hard to rehearse for this. Cause you gotta come off natural, not like you have the words memorized.
There were like 8 of us, and I think everyone (but me) was sweating bullets cause they had no idea what to do in-front of the video lol.

an actual 30? hows that possible? I was looking at DAT data before, the highest recorded score nation wide was a 28 (never a 30)

I am sensing more violations for USC.......first they cheat and get all there 2005 wins vacated, bush stripped of heisman, Stripped BCS championship, and now essays w/o interviews???wtf is this world coming to?

Hmm your user name makes me think Ohio State.

oklahoma......sooners were steam rolled by them that year

I heard NYU and Creighton made exceptions to the interview.

And speak for yourself, dentalworks 😉. The MMI at UMich freaked me out haha. It was like speed dating with your career hanging on the line :scared:

I interviewed at temple back in fall of 2003.

Their interview sucked then, and it sounds like it sucks now.

Seriously, I went to about 10 interviews, temple's interview experience was by far the lamest.

I know UCSF makes you write an essay during the interview day. From what my friend tells me it is some random "what do you think this passage is about"

Does temple have the worst dental school in america? I ask myself this daily.
