I'm a soon to be D1 at UB. I live in Rochester and know quite a bit about Buffalo but not so much about the areas right around UB. Im not so interested about living 2 minutes from UB, but I am curious about you opinions and thoughts about current student living situations there a bit away from UB South.

I am in the process of being pre-approved for a house loan. My bros are telling me to look into Hamburg...~20 minutes drive away, and places not directly near campus, considering we are at school 7:30-5:00PM I dont think proximity is key. Plus waking up and driving wakes you up for classes anyways, so give me you thoughts on areas of life. People talk about areas right around campus as being ghetto... but thats subjective to your upbringing ya know? So if you have any insights, PM me, or reply to post.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where should I look into?? Considering quality of life under 100k!
If there is such a category!

Any input is appreciated.

I am a 4th year at UB. I wouldn't live in Hamburg. There are places just as nice if not nicer a lot closer to school. As far as living near campus, some people do, but I wouldn't advise it. The immediate area is kinda rough, but you can go just a mile or so away and you are in nice neighborhoods. If you are looking to buy a house I would recommend looking in the Snyder area around Main and the 290 or out in Williamsville on up main street. I live in some apartments there and it is a really nice neighborhood. It takes me about 20 minutes with traffic and about 10 without to get to school. I have a couple of classmates with houses for sale now in Snyder and another about a mile from school if you are interested I can give you some info on them....housing is very affordable in Buffalo right now, but I would buy in an area that you are going to be able to sale your house easier in four years, I don't think near the school is going to fit that bill. Just my 2 cents, if you need more info let me know.

I agree with scuba. There are SOO many nice neighborhoods within a few miles of school. As long as you live north or northeast of school, the areas are safe and you can find gorgeous houses now for super cheap since it's a buyer's market.

I would look at Snyder, Williamsville, and Amherst (all pretty wealthy towns and the first two are known for gated communities.) There's also a very wealthy area on Depew and Woodbridge Aves, which is around a mile south of school (and within the city limits of Buffalo) but have enormous houses and are close to the Buffalo zoo and Delaware park.

Also, it's always taken me closer to a half hour to get to Hamburg, and there's nothing special there that aren't in the closer suburbs. You know Rochester and the weather, so you won't want to take an hour when that 25-minute drive is super slow because of ice. You'll really appreciate being closer when you have to come in late for labwork, your patient can suddenly come in after all, and when you want to hang with your classmates.

Thanks everyone... now onto getting pre-approved.

I am a 4th year dental student at Buffalo and I would not recommend living more than a few miles from campus. There are plenty of nice places to live within 5 minutes, especially if you have a family. I bought about 2 miles from school and I absolutely love the place we are in. We live right next to a large park with an Ice Skating Rink (indoor thank god), play areas, pool and plenty of places for the kids to play. Great neighbors (one directly next door will be one of your instructors your third year), and it is very reasonable to live here. We live in Tonawanda. We are close enough to Dairy Queen and Andsersons Custard that my son was able to ride his bike there on his 2nd ride without training wheels and I generally ride my bike to school when the weather is nice. Living in Hamburg, Lewiston or Grand Island may sound nice but I think when you are driving home at 2 or 3 in the morning through a blizzard after spending 8 hours in lecture and 6 or 7 hours in the lab you will really wish you were living a lot closer. Also you will find that you are going to make a lot of friends that you will like to hang with and if you are 30 minutes away it will definitely make it more difficult. Stick to the closer areas of town and I think you will be happier. Also, I have sent you a PM.
