University of Cincinnati C/O 2011!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Aero... Thanks alot for your input, looks as though you are in a simular yet more stressful situation.... Now those private loans you speak of, is that a loan seperate from that stafford and grad plus?... and is this a loan that has to follow UC's Budget for years 1-4?.... I guess the question I am trying to ask is, can I take a extra student loan out seperate from stafford and grad plus and not have to worry about paying on it until after graduation? If so, who do you suggest going with, like you said, my credit is 750+ so I better jump on this opportunity if I have it.... Another question... Is the UC budget for students set for just the stafford + grad plus, or stafford + grad plus + any private loans?

I appologize for all the questioning, but this private loan thing may be the answer I'm looking for my family and I... Thanks .... I can already tell that we are classmates out to help each other!!!:hardy:
Take a look at the following Bank of America site. I believe they are the one but I need to look at the specific program.

As recommended above, Dr. Burr would be the best resource for facts.

Hey everyone, I interviewed fairly late (January) and so I ended up interviewing for a spot on the waitlist which I am currently on. I was just wondering if anyone knew how extensively they use this list according to past statistics. The admissions department seems reluctant to give out much information, and I was just curious if anyone knew what my chances were. Also, if anyone knows how they order the list (priority given to those who show interest, etc) that would also be helpful. Thanks a lot.

Did you receive an email yesterday from UCCOM asking you if you wanted to remain on the Alternate List? If so, could you share what your letter said?

Also, there is a pre-Allo thread "Cincinnati Waitlist" which may be useful for you.

Thanx in advance.

Anybody else not get the housing packet that was supposed to be attached in the e-mail that was sent today?

Anybody else not get the housing packet that was supposed to be attached in the e-mail that was sent today?

I got it just fine. Would you like me to forward it to you?

all i got was a one page roommate form, was there something else?

thanks

That's all I got, too. There should have been a housing packet attached. I e-mailed them today to let them know that I didn't get it. I haven't heard back yet.

You actually should have two emails; one regarding the enrollment packet with a criminal background check info and a sheet regarding deadlines for this summer (all in PDF format attachments). the other email was regarding housing with a housing booklet and a roomate request form. Hope this helps! let me know if any one wants me to email them one of these items, love to help out if I can... 😀

I'm also joining the class of 2007. I've lived in several areas of Cincinnati and am living in Blue Ash now with my wife and three kids. The drive in should be around 20-30 min depending on time of day but the schools are great and everything else is very accessible.

Any other non-traditionals of there for 2011?

I too am non-traditional. Although I am only on the alternate list, I am researching places to live should I be lucky enough to get a spot. Can anyone recommend a few areas with good elementary schools? My oldest will be starting kindergarten in a year. I would really like a 30min drive or less (mostly less).

Hey, I too will be going to Cincinnati next year, and just wanted to say hi. Anyone else busy trying to spend their last weeks/months of undergrad livin it up, knowing whats ahead of us?

I have lived in Blue Ash for the past nine years. We moved to that area because of the school district and it has turned out to be a great choice. It is right about on your edge for drive time but it is worth it. Also, the community pool is only $45 for the year and the gym is about $30 for the year!!!! Keeps the kids happy. I thought for a moment about moving closer to UC but the cost of private school would more than taken care of any mortgage/rent difference - I would not send my kids to Cincinnati Public Schools at this point.

If you end of getting moved up from the alternate list give me a shout and I would be happy to provide more details/suggestions. Good luck!

hey there OState. ahhh i wish i could. i am somewhat non-trad so I have been out of undergrad for two years. I am working full time now but definately plan on taking July to just relax and get situated in my new place and travel to see some friends and family.

How accurate are the yearly budgets that the Financial Aid Office calculate? They seem to account for a lot of things. I just added up how much one non-resident year plus three resident years costs, and it's scary. :wow:

They also DON'T account for a lot of things if you think about it. (Do you go to any doctor or take any meds, wear contacts, want cable and/or internet at home) That being said, I think most people stay under the budget. They give you a TON of money for rent-- you shouldnt need it all. I'm not the most frugal person (hey, nobody's perfect 😀 jk) and I borrowed the stafford loans-- $38,500 plus a couple thousand more for my first two years.

Medical school is expensive. There's no way around that!

I agree with stargirl, I'm at the end of my first year and I also am not the most frugal but I also don't spend on unecessary things. I am going to be able to get by on the feds alone in fine fashion this year and plan on doing the same next year. I might borrow less if i end up with a roommate or two.

Bottom line... the budget is accurate

Do any of you have experience with the MSSP (Med Student Scholars Program)? Is it anything groundbreaking, or can you do pretty much the same stuff on your own? Is it anything decision-swaying, in your opinion?

Also, 'sup Wigton 😀? It's Roua.

Does anybody recall from the interview Dr. Wexler talking about the upcoming MD/MPH program that will be available for next year? I am interested in this but I can not find anything about it on the website, anybody know anything about this at UC?

Oh and by the way, my wife and I decided to pull our lease from the downtown property and found a property just across the VA hospital behind the gaslight.... got an awesome deal... two story 1200 sq ft w/ free heat and water for 650/month, not to mention it's a two minute crawl to the college of medicine... But i must tell you that I did not find it in a paper or internet ad, we drove all over clifton calling numbers posted on "for rent signs." apparently, most landlords said they don't advertise with any media b/c they get way too many inquiries. So I encourage those that can drive around the area to do so! Thats how I got the hook up. Good luck to all!:luck:

2 bedroom? that seems like an awesome deal. I am looking at a two bedroom, two bathroom house in Mt. Lookout (with fenced in backyard because I have a dog) for 1200/month. I am gonna have a roommate so it will be 600/month. I agree that driving around is the best way to go. I thought about living in Clifton but I like the Mt Lookout/Hyde Park area and my roommate who has lived in clifton for 4 years wants to go somewhere else. That being said, Mt Lookout and Hyde Park are more pricey than Clifton and I have about a 15 minute drive to class. Anyone else know where they are going to live?

What are the UC class of 2011 thoughts on $20Kat UCinn vs. $80K at UToledo both over 4 years with about a 10K-12K difference in cost? Toledo is far cheaper.

that's 10K-12K a year cheaper.

Phyeng11, I have zero knowledge about UToledo, but some things to consider is what kind of medicine do you want to go in to, Academic? Pediatrics? ER Med? You also have to consider the proximity of all the hospitals near a given school.... For UC, there are children's, Christ, Good sam, University, and a bit more hospitals with in a 1-2 mile radius.... Now again, I don't know about UToledo, but if research is something that may be in your future, I would bite the bullet and go to UC... and yes I am bias so certainly ask some questions on UToledo's class of 2011 thread... congrates on both scholarship opportunities and good luck in your desicion making!!... by the way did you find out about the scholarship through a estimate finacial aid award ?...anyone?

I would definately save some money in the long run by going to Toledo but not enough to take me away from Cincinnati. I would say a lot of it is personal preference and what you look for in a school but the major factor that made me choose UC over Toledo was location. I just see Cincinnati as being a much better city to be in than Toledo. I don't really have plans of going into research or a super competitive specialty/residency, but why limit myself. I would think UC carries a slightly better reputation for residency (of course i am biased like bearkat....i chose UC 😛 ). In the long run, i dont see 40k making that big a difference or at least enough to make me go to Toledo.

Thanks for the input Bearkat1 and IckeyShuffle. I really do appreciate it.

Bearkat1, I got my scholarship notification from UC in the mail a couple weeks ago.

The difference in cost/year is 10K-12K. The scholarship difference is 60K. Not only do you save a minimum 40K for going to UToledo, but they are also giving me 60K more. That comes out to be a 100K difference, and let's not talk about interest. Suffice to say, 10 years from now +100K might not mean so much.

I'm all caught up in the numbers, I know. But, the opportunity does take nice load off my slightly nontraditional *&%. My goals as a physician are simple. I'd like to treat as many people as possible interest aligned, be a family man, and give back to the community. Researcher, hospital executive,....not me, or so I think. UT grads match at major programs all over. The highest step 1 score is recorded there. It's easy and it's only for 3-4 years considering away rotations. The school encourages their students to get out and visit other hospitals. Cleveland, Ann Arbor, Detroit, and Columbus are all 90, 45, 45, 120 min away, respectively. I'm not worried about access to hospitals.

I'm rambling, and you guys probably already know these things. Believe you me, this is truly therapeutic. I wanted to know what respected medical school applicants thought about the matter.

Ahh I see. I think you're looking at the cost of attendance. That's just the amount of money that the school decides that you can borrow-- or the amount of money that would be reasonable for a med student to need. UC is pretty generous with this so that's why it looks more expensive. You definitely don't have to borrow that much money-- in fact most people don't. I looked at budgets, and an example is Toledo's budget allows $450/mo for rent, and UC allows $800/mo.

To compare apples to apples, you could compare tuition (Toledo= $21412, UC $26745) but that even gets sticky because they add all these "fees" to your bill too. Honestly, theyre both public schools, youre very fortunate that you got scholarships to both, so I would just pick which one I liked better! I know it seems irresponsible but you can't make money your only determining factor, especially when the dollar amounts are so close-- it's not worth it if you're going to be unhappy for 4 years.

Thanks for the feedback Stargirl50. May 15th approaches, and yet I waiver. I'll get there. Thanks you again.

Good luck with your decision... and when you get frustrated, just think-- there are a ton of people who would love to be in your shoes! 🙂

I was just wondering if anyone is familiar with Stetson Square, the new apartment/townhouse complex immediately across from the medical school? I am concerned about how safe the location is, but the new construction is attractive and proximity can't be beat. I've heard that there are a good number of medical students living there. Any advice? Thanks!

i looked there, i think it is pretty expensive. the cheapest thing they had was over $900/month.

does anyone know how succesful people have been in finding a roommate through the request a roommate form that they sent out with the housing packet? there is a chance my current roommate might fall through and we were about to sign a lease on a really nice house in mt lookout. I definately dont want to lose the place and I know the landlord as he is friends of my brother and is giving me an awesome deal on it. He is willing to hold it until july 1st but not much past that. any help is appreciated and if anyone on here is interested, feel free to PM me... thanks!

Hi!

This is my first time posting, but I wanted to start meeting the people who I am going to be going to school with next year! I just chose Cincinnati and I am SO glad the decision is finally made so I can start making plans. Anyways, I think I accidentally deleted the housing email that got sent, and I was hoping that one of you would be kind enough to forward it to me. I need to find a female roomate for next year...one that will put up with my new puppy! (yea i know i am crazy for having a puppy in med school but he is SO cute)

Anyone heard from the Financial Aid office yet? Getting pretty close to 5/15...

Nope not yet here...do you think the aid estimate will be sent via snail mail or electronically like on our status page?

Got mine by snail mail today. I was sure hoping for more "free" money. Oh well, there is always next year I guess...

What up, guys? I decided on the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. I'm excited. Anyone from Columbus? We really need to get this thread going!

Congrats on choosing UC. I am from Cincinnati and I can assure you that you will like it here 🙂 👍 Did you go to THE ohio state University?

Hey Phyeng!! Congrats on your choice! If you have any questions about the area around the school, shoot away.... I work at children's so I can almost always give updates on the new building... and by the way it looks like the plan pictures...

Got my estimate award also... pretty happy with the need based funds... 90 days and counting

Thanks, bearkat and ickeyshuffle! Eager to meet you guys.

I did attend THE Ohio State University. Graduated 2003.

Gotta find a place to live now.

yeah i like the buckeyes. it is a shame they couldnt take one of the national titles this year. i just squared away my living situation. I got a two bedroom house in Mt Lookout. It is a really nice area. where are you thinking about living?

Yeah, I'm a fanatic. I was dissappointed to say the least.

B-Ball - did better than expected.

Football - we simply got spanked.

I think having two teams go to the national championships is quite the acheivement considering Ohio climate vs. Florida climate. OSU recruits well.

I'd like to live in the Hyde Park area. Mount Lookout is nice. I prefer to have a less than 10-12 minute drive to work. Initially, I wanted to have a bike ride at most to class everyday. I think the best way to find a place is driving around the area. I don't know....we'll see.

Looking at this thread it seems that I am headed into Buckeye territory. Any other U of M alum/fans out there that will sport the maize and blue with me?! I am a HUGE college football fan. I already have season football tickets for this fall...and the Buckeyes are headed to the BIG HOUSE this year!!

haha are you on the corner of delta and linwood? i had called about a 2br house there and the guy said it had just been taken. there were a lot of cute houses for rent there though, right by the square with all the restaurants. my husband and i have been looking around, but honestly there is so much for rent here makes my head spin. i am in madisonville right now and was hoping to get a bit closer to school, especially for when the new library opens. ooooh and hardwood floors 😉

nope, i actually got my place through a friend so it never went on the market. I know what place you are talking about though. There are a ton of places to live right around there. It is such a nice area too. I definately see myself taking my doberman for a stroll through the square. Do live in the that new complex in madiville, centenial station? my girlfriend lives there, those places are pretty nice.

If you cant tell by the name, Im in Columbus now. Grad from osu last spring, and just hanging out and working in these last few months of my offyear. Keep up the discussions about living and such ... I need to start looking for places in the next few weeks, and I'd like to be near some other med students.

Off topic, but did anyone catch "the worlds smartest boy" on TLC yesterday?

Buckeyeforbass,

Going tomorrow to find a place. I'll let you know how things go.

So, goldngrl31 you are definitely headed to Buckeye country. Get ready! Maybe we can come together and support the Bearcats, but I doubt it. :meanie:

haha yup, that's where we're at! for other people: the apartments here are very nice, but you can definately get a three bedroom or a house through local landlords and such for about the same price..that's why we're poking around, but we may stay here too. yeah but if anybody likes apartment complexes, all new stuff, etc. this place is nice, more expensive than local duplexes and such like i said earlier but definately less expensive than the drexel and sutton station.

:luck:

Hey goldngrl31,
I am a current 1st year and fellow Michigan alumni. There are definitely kindred spirits, I know of about 8 in my class (5 of us went there) Wear your maize and blue with pride! Heck, I lived in Columbus and wore my maize and blue with pride (though I don't know if that was the smartest idea...I almost got run over biking sometimes...) Anyway Go Blue, you are not alone!

Roua,

I'd say this program is not decision swaying. It is something great for people with interests in the specific areas that the programs cover ie. Neuro, geriatrics, family practice, peds...

The MSSP gives you specific exposure to these areas beginning in your first year and continuing through the 4th year with the hope of encouraging people to enter these specialty areas, most of which are underserved.

PS are you gonna be coming here in august??

Buckeyeforbass,

Going tomorrow to find a place. I'll let you know how things go.

Any Luck? I'm headed up to look at a place in Clifton next week... about a stones throw from the med center.
