University of Cincinnati C/O 2011!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There's a facebook group for our class for anyone who's interested. I just found it today by searching for Cincinnati Med.

Is anyone filling out the "find a roommate" form? I don't really want to live by myself, but I'm nervous about a random roommate too. What do you guys think?

Thought about it ... also scared about random roomies though. I figure I will take this year by myself, then hopefully meet people to live with the year after.

A big smile out to all fellow UCinc c/o 2011 classmates. Reading previous posts gives me the impression that this will be a fun, friendly bunch. I received my acceptance on May 18, so consider yourselves the proud new owners of a very non-traditional, whatever that means, fellow med student. Cheers.

What is going on? Just to be clear, this is a drunk blog. Yesterday was my official last day as a tech in the ER. I know many others will soon have their last as well. Let's all share. I really can't wait to meet all my classmates. Again, I declare we get the UCCOM class of 2011 thread jumpin'. Where is Ickyshuffle? Holla back future doctors.

Wish I could say it was my last but I just talked to my employer last week to let them know and it looks like I will be able to work part-time for up to 20 hours per week. If I can hold 19 per week I get to keep health insurance for the family! I'll probably need it to cover the burnout...

hey aero... if you could hold 19 a week that would probably double your income if you consider the amount $ for family health insurance (spouse, children, yourself).... it will cost me about $6000 a year!!! for my family...

I would be paying more since I will be part-time but it's still a good deal. Plus, maintaining nearly half of my salary for a few years would keep me from draining my savings so fast or taking private loans. I just don't know if I can average 19 hours...

Im still here, was just out of town for a little bit. I end work with the radiologist I work for at the end of this month. I plan on taking July to just relax and move into my new house in hyde park. I am going to atlanta to see my bro and nephew and I also just bought some tickets to the brickyard 400 in indy. I have never been to a NASCAR race but some of my buddies from college are coming from the east coast so I thought it would be a cool thing to go to. I guess i just need to fill my time before bengal season 🙂 I cant wait to have a month off. I definately need it before school starts. looking forward to orientation week 👍

A quick question for anyone who might know or have heard: I looked at the housing booklet and took note of Bellevue Gardens apartments. Any opinions on the complex would be helpful. Thanks.

Can't beat the location for a quick walk to MSB. If you have a chance, drive the immediate neighborhood behind the complex - it can still be a bit rough. Seems a bit high on the monthly rate. If you are looking for things to do outside of school and don't mind the commute, look into the Hyde Park / Oakley area - all young professionals.

Has anyone tried submitting the supplemental form? I can't find the submit/enter button anywhere on the page, and the font alignment is off. Oh well, we have until the 15th of July.

Nice! Glad you're back in action.

Are you using a Mozilla / Firefox Browser? If you try it in IE it should work, I had the same problem as you. I think the submit button is all the way at the bottom of the form, if you have to scroll to get to it I believe.

Is anybody having luck with a Mac? I tried using IE 5 and encountered the same problems as with the other browsers.

I know what you mean. I turns out that you need to be running Windows to get the correct formatting. As a Mac convert, I hope this is the last time I have to borrow my son's computer to get something done. Parallels is another option, but that seems excessive.

Ok MRDRY, how "very non-traditional" are you using your son's computer? Can you beat 36 with three kids?

Hi, Aero. Competition, huh? Fun 🙂

For starters, I'm 40, a single parent and have two kids, 3 and 10. Hard to say which hand wins. Calling ourselves non-traditional kind of implies that there is a standard, traditional student out there. Maybe there is, but my classmates over the past few years have been a pretty varied bunch. It beats being called old. Either way, I'm really looking forward to this fall.

It would be great to compare notes on how to survive, dare I say enjoy, our med school experience. We live in Minneapolis now, so I am in the process of finding schools, day care and housing in the Cincinnati area. We hope to drive out at the end of this month to explore. Any thoughts?

i used to think of myself as somewhat non traditional being out of college for two years. i would say you two would fit into that category a little more than me. 😛

I'm in Blue Ash which is about 18 miles north of campus. The school district is excellent so we are staying put. They do have all day kindergarden available. Also, the community pool is $40 for the year and the gym is $15 for the year. The community has about 100,000 during the day (office parks) but only 20,000 residents so the tax revenue and therefore services are high.

Once you get inside city limits I'm not such a good resource on schools but it can get trickly to get in a good one.

PM me when you are coming down this way. If I'm in town I'd be happy to provide any information I can.

Hello UCCOM classmates, this is my first post here. I am so excited about the whole experience and looking forward to meeting u all in August. A question to start with; any one have input on Piedmont Mews housing?

Hey fellow classmates!! 54 days left until the fun starts.... go to your login page and start updating the 2007 class profile... looking at that will give me a distraction here at work.... My wife, son, and I are moving across from the VA hospital july 27 (day after the jimmy buffet concert=next day hangover :hardy:)...If any body else is moving in on vine st across the VA late late July or early August... let me know ill help you move in... never too early to help our fellow classmates out, we have four more years of it! Hope all is well with everyone and look forward to meeting all of you! 👍

i had a friend that lived there...it is like smack dab in front of the hospital, same side of the street and everything. i never went in, but what i do know is it had like gated parking (idk if he paid extra for that), a fireplace, and it's literally in front of the hospital and on the other side of the vontz center. you'd be super close. i never got a sense of how much or little he liked it, i can im him and ask maybe...the only thing i ever heard him complain about was the sirens, but that's probably true for most of the apts. around there.

I hear mixed feelings about Piedmont. One friend of mine thinks its alright another can't wait to move out ... he's absolutely hated it from day one. Personally I wouldn't choose to live there, I think there are better options in the immediate vicinity of the MSB.

I have an odd request, but here goes. I'm in charge of getting people to respond to the 31 question's thread in the mentor forum and am looking for current students at all of the med schools of the US. So, I realize this is the class thread for the incoming class, but perhaps someone from previous classes has been helpful in answering your questions and giving you advice in this thread. I have no time to read through every single class thread to get this info, but if you could post some user names of some such people (or pm them to me, including what school you are from), I can pm them with my request. Thanks!

Can anyone comment on the wireless / wired computer access around MSB? I want to maintain continual email contact with my current employer so I am hoping that I can get it from inside MSB classrooms.

Thanks!

Hey guys,

I'm a current reapplicant at UC and a waitlister there as well. I live in the area and I have a room that is open for rent for the next year (or longer if we like you) if anyone is interested. The house is in Hyde Park (about 3.5 miles from the campus), rent and utilities will most likely be around 500 per month(we are still negotiating the amount) and the house is about 1 block off of the square. We have off street parking, a deck with a grill, 4bdrms, 2 full baths, 2 study/chill rooms, a full kitchen, gas range, dishwasher, free washer and dryer, close location to food (groceries as well as restaurants) and a lot of room (the house is about 3000 sq ft. and was renovated totally about 4 years ago). As for the roommates we are rather clean people, well, except for the cat, he sheds a bit. We have 2 current UCCOM waitlisters / re-applicants and a UCSOP (School of Pharmacy) student.

Send me a message on SDN and I'll get back to you.

Thanks!

Hey Aero,
There is a pretty decent secured wireless network at UC throughout MSB. You just need to get the UCIT to add your wireless card's ID to their database. Here is some more specific info about the wireless network (from UC). http://www.uc.edu/ucit/access/wireless_data_communications.html

Here is the link to register your card and they will provide you with the encryption and password for the network. https://www.uc.edu/ucit/networking/login.cfm?CFID=102317&CFTOKEN=46869335

Also there is a library with internet access on the same level as the Dean's Office.

So, I've heard that Time Warner Cable Service is horrible. That being said, I still need to get internet service and I am on the fence as to whether or not I want to get cable tv. Can anybody share their experiences with Time Warner and/or suggest an alternative for internet service?

Thanks

oooh I DESPISE Time Warner. Their customer service is nonexistent-- dont even think about trying to call them on the phone, it will be quicker to go to a customer service center to get whatever you need done. I pay $96 for internet + basic cable (you read that right) but really there are no other options unless you can live with 3 TV stations or your landlord lets you put up a dish (many wont). Its a total ripoff-- but on the bright side, the internet is awesome. 🙂 I did a lot of studying at home my first 2 years, so a fast connection was a necessity for me. Some get along without it, but it would be hard IMO.

Sorry, Nancy Zimpher - my fingers got a bit out of whack. There have been plenty of articles on her conflict with various college heads.

I still have very high confidence in the UC surgery program - I'm hoping to be able to match into it in four years but I've been told by three different sources that there are some problems. There are probably few programs that roll along smoothly so I look for all of the things I have heard to go away it short order.

Sorry for digging up such an old post, but i was just scrolling thru and felt a need to comment. I'm a 3rd year at UC, and I just recently had a meeting with my advisor, who is a burns/reconstructive attending at Shriner's. We were discussing surgery programs (my interest) in the region, and he says University Hospital's surgical program is a top 10-20 program in the country. He considers it better than OSU and the Chicago programs. He also said to expect a high-powered appointment for full-time chair in the next several months to a year, as our program is so highly regarded, we are attracting some of the top candidates nationally for this position.

we've kept a pretty good deal for high speed through cincinnati bell - $20 a month or so...

I've had both RoadRunner from Time Warner and Zoomtown from Cincinnati Bell and have no complaints about either. I have not had to use the support services of either so I can't comment on that. The general feeling in Cincinnati is that Time Warner is evil since there is little competition in this area.

I swtiched to Zoomtown because I had DirecTV installed so it proved to be cheaper. It is supposedly a bit slower but I didn't notice anything in day-to-day usage. Whatever you choose look at the bundle prices and when special deals run out call up and tell them you are looking to switch services and they might renew it.

has anyone received their real financial aid package(not the estimate) yet? I believe we get em in July right? oh and is anybody available to help move a fellow classmate on July 28 on vine st?, currently my son is 9 months so he can't help too much:laugh: PM me... I would love to return the favor for anyone else moving in after that date around the clifton area.

Now you can view the financial aid package through onestop. They did not mail them yet or at least I have not gotten them yet. But you can see what they will give you online. Unfortunately, the tuition increased for this year. Out of state is now 46000$$$$$$$$$$$, oh mama.

Well only if the instate committee think that we deserve to be Ohio residents. Usually there is a list of stuff that needs to be done so that out of staters can be considered instaters.

Classmates, i need someone to help me in moving my couch from the truck to the apartment across from University Hospital. Is there anyone available this weekend? Thanks

Hey guys, I'm interviewing here in a week and just wanted to get some opinions from current students, both positive and negative...thanks in advance!
