University of Cincinnati SMP, Class of 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got in with a 3.0 cum and 3.2 sci but that was in large part due to a bachelors degree from 5 years prior. lots of good grades and life changes between those grades and getting accepted. I'm probably not representative of the average student, but don't assume you can't get in with that gpa.

Thanks motomed! Did you apply to any other SMP or post-baccs that you were accepted to?

It is not necessary to have a 3.5. You can indeed be accepted with such grades if you have a good (32+) MCAT score.

Remember, programs like this seek people who are "on the cusp" of being accepted, with their downfall being a low GPA. Keep that in mind. Before you apply make sure all the other weak parts of your application are taken care of as there won't be much if any time during the program to participate with EC's.

My grades were low(er), but I was accepted to Georgetown as well. I obviously like U-Cinn more!

I applied to a bunch of programs, got into a handful of them right away, then withdrew my app from the rest once I got into Cincy. It was my first choice from the start. I was waitlisted at EVMS at the time but had no rejections.

If you do well in this program and get into Cincinnati or another medical school, will you have to retake the medical classes that you already took and did well? Will you have the option of retaking any class that you didn't do as well in? thanks!

At Cincinnati, you will definitely have to retake the courses. At most schools, this will be the case. It may be possible to get these classes waived at a med school somewhere, but I have never heard of that happening myself.

In the SMP, you will NOT be able to retake any of the courses. And frankly, if you do badly enough that you would have to retake one of the med courses, you can kiss med school goodbye...sorry. SMP = High risk, high reward. Do well, and you increase your chances of admissions. Do poorly, you're cooked.

Hey guys, thank you so much for the advice!

From what I gather:

EVMS --> You do their SMP and go to their med school you don't have to retake the classes and get whatever grade you got, not just a pass for passing the course. have to repeat at other med schools just not at EVMS.

USF IMS --> You get into USF the next year or anywhere and you repeat all courses.

Drexel IMS --> the medical ones you took, some of them you don't have to repeat if you get into their med school. but do if you get in elsewhere.

Gtown and BU are the same way I believe as drexel.

Not sure about other schools.

You defnitely do not get to waive your classes if you get accepted to Cincinnati for med school. I think it's highly unusual that any medical school would allow you to do that even if you did really well in their SMP.

Also, we had Dr. Manuel come in for a presentation to our SMP group on Monday and from what he says, the Cincinnati SMP does not officially have a linkage with the medical school, but the school does accept a lot of people from our SMP program (7 from the previous year's class) as well as students from other SMPs such as Georgetown and BU. It seems that me that UCCOM is an SMP "friendly" medical school.

Ah I see. It sounds like what you are saying is that it's kinda like EVMS or Drexel in being SMP friendly or Albany or NYMC but unlike EVMS in being higher linkage like EVMS and RFU with their own SMPs.

Makes sense.

Exactly
