It seems the UC SMP thesis requirement is far more intense/hardcore compared to those of the Tufts BMS and Georgetown SMP (and maybe others). It's cool to invest a lot of time in a paper and maybe have the opportunity to be published, but its also a little scary for that large a percentage of your grade to be dependent on it. Can any current UC students offer any insight into it? The process.. length... anything..

Thanks!

hi pierre!
i'm a current student at uc...it is definately a substantial project but i've never felt overwhelmed by it. you start off the first quarter with your topic picked out and you are perusing resources...2nd quarter you're writing an outline, third quarter you're writing the first half, and during the summer you are finishing up. it's challenging for sure, but as long as you stay on track i don't think it is a major stressor. that and picking a topic in an area you are really interested in is important too, you shouldn't be afraid to look around at a few topics, like for example, i'm studying a certain type of glycoprotein and that was the project discription, but i found out it is hugely implicated now in cancer diagnositics so i was immediately interested. i also have an great thesis advisor, and you want to make sure that is a good relationship too. some people that have knocked out their projects really efficiently have given talks, or been invited to work in labs. bottom line, i think if someone comes here they should be prepared to have it as a constant thread of their year in the program and be good with working on it here and there in meaningful ways to keep up.

I think you are worrying a little too much about the thesis. Yes, its worth a lot...BUT...its a project that is almost exclusively ran by YOU. You choose what to write and make most of the decisions......there is no defense, no exam, no trick-questions, no complex pathways to memorize. Your mentor is there to give you guidance and answer questions; they've been published, you (probably) have not. If you're getting freaked out by the phrase "scientific rigor", don't. That just means that everything you say in your thesis (including your own speculations) has to based on good, scientific data, and not just some wild idea that has no support. Now, it is going to take a lot of time and a lot of effort to produce a well-written piece, but any pre-med should have the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills to do a good job.

I really can't speak much on how the other programs do it, but i can't imagine that the standards here at UC are significantly more strict than other places. So, if this is the only thing that is giving you doubts, then you should not worry.🙂 I'm assuming you have already read the Survival Guide on the website, but if not, then check out what it has to say. Feel free to PM if you have any other specific questions. I 'm actually getting close to finishing my thesis since I have to leave early to start med school, so I can definately try and qwell any other doubts you or anyone may have.

Thanks!

I'm definately leaning towards UC, but have been going through all the differences between SMPs. I wish I could find something horrible about one of them but haven't heard much negative feedback from anybody on any of them really (maybe since 2 are still pretty much unknowns). Oh well...

Cheers!
