Hello! Thank you in advance for any and all advice and help you can offer. I have three schools I am really deciding between, but unless one gives me a scholarship I am between UC and Wayne State
UC Pros:
In-state tuition 100% (won’t get any need based scholarships bc they require parental info even if parents aren’t helping at all, but keeping fingers crossed for merit/diversity scholarship)
Has a top 50 ranking
Administration seems very, very supportive and has been helpful
Has a good relationship with hospitals in the area
Students I have talked to seem to really love their experience here
Adopted true P/F due to Covid, students voted to keep it, however they have not made a final decision
UC Cons:
It’s in Ohio..... I was born and raised in Columbus and went to Ohio State for undergrad. I 10000% want to go out of Ohio, most likely the east coast, for residency and am nervous that might be difficult. That’s the only major con for real.
Wayne State Pros:
-Possible in-state tuition...I’m waiting to hear back about financial aid and may receive need base here.
-Have a possible research connect conducting research I’m very passionate about
-Not in Ohio lol. While Detroit, MI is still the Midwest, it is a different state.
-Ample community service opportunities working with the populations I want to serve as a physician
-I like the idea of having a large class, however it did make me nervous that a few years ago, they had literally 6 or 7 Black and brown students out of ~300 students
-Detroit may be a more fun city vibe that I would love
Wayne State Cons:
-Have heard that administrative support is less than ideal
-P/F with a ranking system (this may not be correct anymore, so please lmk if you know something different)
-I don’t know if there is a general consensus among students that they love it there, but with a class size that large, it makes sense.
This is all I really have. If I receive in-state at Wayne, cost of attendance will be about the same.... it may even be less at Wayne if I receive that and scholarships. Cost of living in both cities isn’t ridiculous and distance to family from either place is not bad.
