Wondering if anyone here is involved with the MSTP program at University of Colorado Denver. I am very interested in applying to enter next year and will be moving to Boulder this summer anyway so my fiancee can start her graduate program and I can be considered as in-state (I noticed from my MSAR that Colorado overwhelmingly favors in-state applicants for interviews). Luckily, they only require a year of residency before your matriculation time to be in-state, which I will have.
My generic stats are:
3.75 (science and general) in Molecular Biology - Biochemistry
I just finished my two year Teach For America commitment and was the science head at my school (my statistics for student achievement are exceptional)
A year doing part time research (primarily materials prep and literature seeking) at a condensed matter physics laboratory at LSU during my second year of teaching
I just took my MCAT on the 21st so that is forthcoming.
I know I definitely need to get involved in research during this application year but researching positions from outside Colorado at this point makes it seem a little sparse. I was told it would be easy to get in a generic high turnover government lab or something, but that is less than ideal for a real project (which I had this year even though I did not have much time to give to my lab).
Also, since my fiancee has a two year program to finish in Boulder and I am not a fan of commuting I would not be opposed to having to reapply the next year if my year of research in Colorado is not considered enough (though from my viewpoint as someone that has been in the "real world" now for two years, keeping me out of school an extra year when that is my intended path is a waste of valuable resources, but my opinion is irrelevant). If I was accepted to another program, is MSTP open to deferring or is that an absolute no-no?
