I applied to University of Detroit Mercy.. (as well as University of Nebraska, NYU, Boston, USC, Pacific, Nova)

I've been researching the schools and found some sites that say UDM is catholic!!! Is this true??

If this is true, and I am not catholic, will i not get accepted/ will it be worthwhile to go there?

I am not religious at all... nor am i christian

u dont have to be cath. nor chris. to get admited! it is pretty much the history of the institution. i took a class in a cathlic schoo and they have the cross ubove the blackboord in every class room.

I think it's pretty common that medical centers named Mercy often are, or at some point were Catholic, I think it's short for something like Mercy of Mary or that it had to do with the Sister's of Mercy or something.

One of the things about Catholic Universities is that most often they don't really give you any bonus points for being Catholic like other religious institutions do (not to say that all do) - much to the frustration of us Catholics (hehe, jk).

Anyways, I'm sure you stand just as good of a shot there as any other school, so don't stress, and good luck!

Yes, UDM is a catholic/jesuit institution, but do not worry about it. I just started there this year and I am Jewish and there are a bunch of other people who aren't Catholic as well. You come to UDM for the education not the religion, we have no religion classes or mass or anything like that 🙂

Hi I have been searching page-by-page so that I can ask anything about UDM or Detroit itself. I guess after reading these posts, I realized that I can ask you guys.

I came to USA in 2004 to go to college, and now I am done and waiting for dental school. My choices are UDM and Tufts (i mean, my top 2 choices). OK, so as a foreigner, I really want an input about Detroit itself. As a matter of fact, I really wish that Forbes.com didn't make ranks in anything, including "The Most Dangerous Cities in the USA" where Detroit ranks #1!! It such a foolish thing if I just swallow what it says, hence I am asking you all.

I personally don't care where I live, but I just want either UDM or Tufts. However, yes, my family back home doesn't have the same thought. They have been bugging me with ridiculous question about Detroit and giving me nightmares through phone calls. 🙁 I know my family so well, if I do go to UDM and they still have this thought, every single day in my whole HELL year in dental school, will also be added by my mother calling me every single day, and that will be just ridiculous... I just want to know your opinion and how exactly the city "works".... I hope you don't think this question isn't foolish coz this thing really gives me headache now.... :'(

Thank you all....

my impression is that their are bad partts of detroit...but just avoid them

Thanks for the reply... Hmmmm I'm still jumbled though... So is it OK to walk home around 2 AM from the library (since I always go home between 2 - 4 AM when I was in college)? I just want to have the sense on how safe it is.... 🙂 I am so glad at least sbd replied... 😀

Yes, Detroit does have some shady parts (name a major city that doesn't). But about 15-30 minutes away in the suburbs are some of the wealthiest places in America.

Detroit being in such shambles has to do with the history of it and Michigan. At one point, about 60-70 years ago, Detroit was one of the most desirable places to live. With the fall of the automobile industry, Detroit collapsed. People readily packed up and moved, abondoning any of their housing. You can see where this is going.

If you go to UDM, you probably won't live in Detroit; none of the students I asked said they lived in the city. Most live about 10-20 minutes away in the suburbs.

To Psi169 & Miss AM,

thx a lot.... I probably do the same, not living in the city. 😉 really glad you guys help....

I've lived in the metro detroit area all my life and the downtown is NOTHING like a boston/new york/chicago etc...the only reason I ever go into the city is for sporting events...the casino is ok but nothing great. This is really how a lot of people feel about detroit...there's just nothing to do down there so not a ton of people go leaving it empty except for bums and the 'ghetto' housing... but like everyones saying if you go there there are some awesome places to live...if I were to go there id probably live in royal oak...its got a pretty cool downtown atmosphere with bars, shopping, and venues.. if you choose udm its going to be for the school because the city around it is NOT FUN

hahaha this is perfect then! I will be in dental school anyway, i guess the city itself will encourage me to just stay and study... Coz my friends told me that doesnt matter where you live, once u'r in dental school, u pretty much hav no life... But I am different, get distracted easily. So maybe UDM isnt bad for my character after all.... 😀 thxxxx everyone.... I just hope I can defend myself with this reasoning when it comes to my parents.... :S
