University of Illinois Veterinary Interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
grades are no longer used as a determining factor. They use your phase two score as 75% of the final decision and interview as 25%. As long as your gpas stay above their 2.75 minimum requirement, grades dont really matter anymore 🙂

Just be careful if you still have prerequisite grades to complete. They want your fall and spring transcripts to see what your grades are in any required class that you did not complete. You need to have a C- or better in any required class. I know people who had their admission taken away because they got a D or lower in a required class spring semester. So some grades still do matter

Well yeah thats in their requirements along with maintaining your gpa.

C- is not a passing score. So at least shoot for average! 😉

They say on the website that you must get a C- or above in a prereq.

So, say you get C- in the prereq and do decent in other courses that aren't prereqs. Would they care? I assume / hope that they have already accepted you based on GPA and so long as you complete the prereqs with passing grades and graduate, you'll be fine.

I'm pretty sure you are correct because if they accept previous courses that are prereqs of C- or higher it would be unfair to discriminate against others who are finishing their prereqs in the spring.

Thats surprising, I believe it was C and above when I applied, could be wrong though. You are correct. You do have to maintain a gpa of like 2.9? I forget, it should be in the info packet they send you.

my grades from fall were evaluated like a week or so ago. also, does anyone know of reasons people don't get admitted, like what are huge no-nos of interviews? It says online Phase 2 plays 75% of their determining who gets in, so do they go into the interviews knowing already who they want?

Does anyone know if they actually interview 200 OOS students, or if they only invite that many? I see five declines on the declined interview page. Just wondering if that means our odds are improving, or if more people are getting opportunity 🙂

Just so everyone knows, they've updated the interview time online! Mine is at 1:00pm!

Thanks GrizzlyBear!! Mine is 11-11:30!! So glad it's not later, I was worried I wouldn't catch my flight at 5:30!

I'm 10 - 10:30. SO GLAD I'm not the 8 or 9am slot. NOT a morning person. I have cotton brain, look puffy, and can't speak well thought out sentences.

Ouijetame - I'm at the same time as you, 10 - 10:30.

Do they tour after interviews?

8:00 - 8:30 AM... meh, at least I will be able to drive home right afterward and not have to stay an extra night, a 9 hour drive starting at about 9 AM (assuming there's no tours or anything) will be much better than starting sometime in the afternoon.

8:00 - 8:30 AM...

Me too! But I just found out my Mizzou interview is scheduled the same day. I may have to turn down Illinois afterall, which breaks my heart a little after all the work to get an interview.

We should do an SDN meet up!! I'm so excited!

I wonder if the interviews are arranged in any sort of way, like alphabetically or according to current ranking in the admissions process

When I talked to Karen I think they said a computer assigns it randomly.

Aaaaaaand mine is at 8:00. Haha so excited to get up super early. I do only have about a 2 hour drive though (after my flight home)

I doubt it on the ranking... I am an 8am interview and would be extraordinarily surprised if I were at the top of the list! Alphabetical is possible, I am an early letter in the alphabet (though not the first few), so with twenty-something interview teams I could see that.

Haha... maybe its on age. I'm in the "old geezer who's been out in the work force a while and will likely be able to get up early" category 😉

I don't have an early alphabet name. I'm also not that old, though I did graduate last May. I'm stumped.

Does anyone who has interviewed at Illinois previously know if they're going to send us an email or something as well? Like something to say how early to arrive, where to go to exactly, if there are tours, and a schedule?

ouijetaime and macita I'm at 10 - 10:30, too!!! 😀

The letter said a half-hour early to arrive I think and the website in that letter will have a schedule posted at some point.

I'm at 2:00pm! That's fantastic, because I have a three-hour drive to get there.

Yes!! I love it when I can put a face to the username. And it's always nice when people actually know what you're talking about when you mention sdn!

You're right, I guess I should have looked at that first :smack: At least a half hour early, at the Veterinary Medicine Basic Sciences Building, and so far no schedule is posted on that website but hopefully it will be up soon.

I'm jealous of all of you. My interview is so freakin late!!! (430-5) And I'm much more of a morning person. Boo.

Mine is 8:30 am - 9 ....ugh I am NOT a morning person! Only about a 45 minute - 1 hour drive though. My last name is W, so it is definitely not alphabetical, haha.

We should all post pictures or something haha. Or maybe all wear name tags with our usernames...just kidding.

That would kind of be hilarious and confusing for non-SDNers! Imagining people looking at us with name tags.. "saltshaker?? wildowl?? boilermaker? huh?!"

Mine is also 8:30 - 9 AM. and my last name is way up in the beginning of the alphabet, so definitely not alphabetical one way or another!

I have an exam that will start just as my interview is over and I go to school at U of I. Looks like I'll be conflicting that one lol.

Does anyone know how quickly U of IL sends out decisions after the interviews? Also, are they going to be mailed like the interview invites were, or are we notified on the status page/by email?

I think they mail out letters and you should get them about a week after your interview I believe.

Oh man, I'm so nervous!! Has anyone gotten an email or letter talking about interview day plans? As in, where to meet, how early to get there, etc.? Otherwise I'm assuming they'll send that via snail mail too...

Me too! In the letter I think it says to arrive half an hour before your interview. It also gives a website that will list the activities. Last time I checked it the plans hadn't been posted yet.

I am nervous, but I just really want to interview right now! So ready for veterinary school 🙂

anyone have any interview advice or past interview questions? I don't know how to prepare

If they do what they did the last couple years there will be tours throughout the day so you can go on a tour before or after your interview. I believe they left every 15-20 minutes and you sign up for when you want to go when you arrive and have checked in.

In the past they've also had info sessions on computer requirements, financial aid, etc.

The only interview advice I have is to be calm and be yourself. Easier said then done, I know. And you can look at previous interview feedback on SDN.

I was curious about the interviewing style and asked a friend who is a current illini vet student and I was told that it's super chill and it's more about being yourself and the ability to communicate well.

Just out of curiosity, where do most people get their animal experiences, particularly large animal?

In case you haven't seen it yet there is now an interview day schedule link on the website they sent with the interview letter. It lays out the stuff going on all day 🙂

I agree that it's about being able to communicate well since it's behavior based, but I personally sucked balls at the interview. Like I could see the scores they were writing down and it wasn't pretty. Still got wait listed and then accepted within like a week after the decision deadline. I just get super nervous with that interview style because I'm a pretty easy going person and I felt like a lot of the questions I got asked were about conflict and stuff like that and I tend not to care unless it's a major deal. I definitely know other people who thought it wasn't that stressful either.

Point of the story is that it's entirely possible to completely butcher the interview and end up getting in. And I agree you should be calm. I probably didn't do well cause I was freaking out over the interview style.

Need to remember to get a hotel room this week!
