To all applicants, would highly recommend looking at University of Illinois at chicago.... it is a "diamond in the rough" and has the happiest residents, best working hours, great board pass rates, and outstanding faculty.

You could go to Rush, NW, U of C, but why would you want to work so hard that you don;t have time to study!!!

I concur. UIC is a great place to be for anesthesia.

Can anyone comment on the strength and reputation of the UIC program? Does the name carry? Do the residents get well trained. I am thinking about loyola or rush in chicago but I was wondering what people thought about UIC and how it compares to them? I have done searches on the program but really haven't got much information about the program.

I interviewed there and I thought it was a good enough program. I can't remember all the details off hand, but some of the stuff that struck me: 1. Money. That program is certainly not lacking. They took us to a really fancy restaurant with a pre-fixed menu and then gave each of us a bag and a novel. The residency program, too, has a lot of the latest gadgets in Anesthesiology. 2. Work environment. They seemed to have implemented the IOM recommendations. No Resident did more than 16 hours straight. All the residents were happy and almost all showed up to dinner AND to the saturday interview. 3. Faculty. I had great conversations with all of them. The residents and they all have great relationships and teaching is paramount. 4. I think you have to go far away for one or two required rotations, but i can't remember which.

It's a solid program overall. One of the reasons I didn't end up ranking too high is because after interviewing in the midwest, I realized I wanted to stay on the East Coast. Life after college there is different. People tend to rank programs based on location because it is a big factor. Had I wanted to return to the midwest, it might have been in my top 5. Hope that helps.

I just ended my resindency there. Very nice program.
shaz: I don't know if the name carry but I feel well trained.

M3 interested in anesthesiology. what are the chances of me matching into UIC, or Rush or Loyola?

I go to UIC medical school, 216 step one, average grades.

Thanks

UIC is much more competitive than Rush or loyola (based on the people I know who have interviewed or matched). Rush has a malignant reputation (not sure how true it is). Loyola is very hard-working, not sure how malignant it is. I have heard there is very little time to ever read at this program and pain is non-existant.

At UIC, transplant is very strong. The department higher-ups are very business saavy and run the most profitable department in the hospital(they have $$$). I believe they are very embedded in the hospital administration as well. As a med student, it seems that education is a large focus of the department.

I believe one of the away rotations is at Christ (busiest trauma in Illinois) and it is about 45min away. The other is at a small community hospital that allows the residents to function essentially as independent attendings. I am not sure where they do peds, as peds volumes in the city tend to be on the lower side outside the dedicated childrens hospitals.

From talking to a few anesthesiologists over in a naperville group (chicago suburb) they were telling me that recruiters like Rush. Rush is definitely very busy and the residents work hard but due to that private practice loves them because they are very good at quick turnover and really know the ins and outs of PP (rush anesthesia group is a private group). One of the anesthesiologists told me that they hired someone from UIC and that they had to cut him because he couldn't handle it. I don't know if he was making a statment about that particular guy or in UIC in general. I like the UIC program because it has more teaching when compared to Rush and Loyola which stress clinical work. My only concern is that will I be spoiled at UIC and not be fit out of residency for private practice? Also, people know that Rush and Loyola have strong residents I don't know what the reputation of UIC is. Any thoughts guys?
