My friends and I have been wondering how they assigned the interview times as well. Mine is at 1:30 so we shall see if lunch is a good idea . What is everyone planning on doing throughout the day?

If you're going to get lunch, I would really strongly recommend the Flat Top Grill. They do make your own stir fry where you pick the ingredients and then they cook it for you. It's REALLY good and reasonably priced.

I've been out to Champaign-Urbana a few times to visit my fiance, so I'm embarrassed to say that off the top of my head, I can't think of anything to do during the day other than walk around. Give me a few minutes and I'll think of something!

got my letter!! my interview is at 4pm, i think i'm one of the last people!! haha man i am not an early person so i can imagine how tired ill be after waking up at 7am!

I think I talked extensively about lunch options in last years thread. The box lunches usually blow. Let me see if I can find it for you people.

As for activities, the day has seminars and demonstrations that they want you to attend, not to mention the tours.

You have to also understand that the weather can be like a roller coaster around here at that time of year.

Wow what I took out of that post is that Aunt Sonja's is gone! WTH! Oh how times have changed since I was a kid!

Do you guys have any recommendations regarding hotels? I am hoping to book mine in the near future 🙂

I went last year for the APVMA symposium and we stayed at the I hotel that is right across from the vet campus. It was really nice and probably convenient However I have no idea how much that costs since the amount I paid included airfare and don't really know about the food situation.

Which hotel was that? How was parking at the hotel? Thanks for the tip 🙂

Yeah, it's been gone for quite some time, now. Just to put in a Walgreens and a parking lot for a hotel. That lot isn't ever full, either. 🙁

well, i guess i will have to stick with a box lunch that blows because i won't have a car and i don't want to walk that far. but i assume since there is only one interview day there will be hundreds of students to socialize with while we eat the lame food lol

If they get the sandwiches from PotBelly's or McAllister's, they won't be so bad.

I'm just giving local options, just in case they are bad.

my husband and I decided to stay at the Union. He went to undergrad there and thought it would be nice.

i still have no letter.. maybe the status is a fluke?? strange..

bardsle1, call them!! see what the dealio is?!?

i think i might have to call tomorrow if it doesnt come.. i know my mail takes forever for some reason but this is getting a bit ridiculous!!

Anyone else dislike that silly Walmart question from last year? (I guess you would have to look at interview feedback haha) It's so silly! What does it reveal about the applicants?

I think it can show a lot about how in depth you have really gotten with your vet experience. A kennel worker would have a hard time thinking of anything other than cat litter and food, but a vet assistant would be able to come up with things like glucose monitors, syringes, gauze, tramadol etc. That was my reasoning anyway.

oh i didnt know walmart sold glucometers lol

hey-so it looks like they've already changed the schedule...there doesnt seem to be an earlier morning info session-which bums me out cuz i had planned to go to it before my interview at 11:30am, and i wasn't planning on staying afterwards. guh!
I'm guessing there may be more changes, so I'm even going to re-check the day before. pfffff.

EDIT: took me a while to find the link again because the old one doesn't work. Luckily i had my hard copy letter with me!

The food form is up.
You're right the info session was moved to lunch time. But my interview is sooo late that I can still make either info session lol
I feel like I won't have THAT much to do for the whole day until my interview at 4. I will be spending a longgg time talkin to current vet students and other interviewees lol

For the schedule, I think you looked at the 2009 schedule instead of 2010... or they originally posted the wrong one maybe? Hard to tell 🙂

Going off of the walmart question--> Maybe it is because I am at a very pre-health profession school, but when I asked my friends the question they all answered basically the same way that you (and I) did. I would rather they ask a question that requires more in-depth thought and analysis. Haha, but maybe it really is a deep question with a deep answer and I am just missing it!!!

Edit: I saved the old interview schedule that they posted originally: I think they did change it! That stinks!

Yea it could have been the old schedule but the dates just weren't obvious. I think that whole page was old because the link does not work any more.

So back to the new info posted, the file for "hotels" is great. it lists all the deals we can get and the prices are cheap. They also tell us which ones have free shuttle service to airport. The only problem is, on the bottom of the page it says "

BlacKat, I am in the same boat with the excessive amount of time before my interview. Everyone I talk to says going last is a good thing, but hopefully our interviewers are not too tired or fed up by the time they get to us!
Also, I cannot get the lunch form or hotel information to open properly... could it be because I am using a mac? I am new to the mac world and still trying to figure it out. (My friend just gave me her old computer because my pc died the night before I submitted my last veterinary applications!) Thank you!

oo its a good thing? why are they saying that? because they will remember us? I'm just thinking that after asking all of the questions by the time they get to us they really know whether ours is good or lame compared to other people, i feel like they will spot all of our mistakes lol

I would put my money on the mac. I love macs but at the same time i hate when things dont work for no apparent reason, and it usually ends up being just because its a mac! I would save the form and attach it here, but there are a lot of different forms so its probably better to use a friends or library's

Supposably the first and last are the most memorable, but perhaps they are just telling me this to make me feel more secure... Either way I am sure we will rock!
I would like to say I would introduce myself, but with 300 people I think the chances of stumbling upon each other are slim.

And thank you for the mac advice. I will now set forth and find a pc.

I can't even get to the interview day website...is anyone else having this problem? I keep trying the one we got in our letter but it says it doesn't exist when I try. Can someone post a working link that I could attempt?

I'm really hoping that's true since my interview is later in the day!
Did current students tell you that?

Not any current students, but several veterinarians, one is an Illinois alumni.

thats funny, I heard the opposite also from veterinarians I work with.....
she 'claimed' that the morning interviews were for applicants they 'knew' they wanted. After all of this, I'm not going to invest a lot of mind power on hearsay. let's just go in and knock their socks off!

Aw, you guys are all silly. Pretty sure they randomly assigned the interview times. But, if I want an ego boost I guess I can assume that my own time must be the best

I was assuming the interview times were randomly assigned as well. The statements people made about last being a good interview time was not based on any knowledge of the inner-workings of the Illinois admissions system, just a general feeling about interviews and auditions.

I was referring to the statements by Pigsfoot that indicated that they placed those that they were sure about as the first interviews of the day. I am pretty sure he/she was being sarcastic as well though. I understand that in the other statements, people were expressing their general feelings/ superstitions. My general feeling is that if you do what you should, it won't matter what time you interview at and you will rock it no matter what time of day.

Any current students use a mac laptop? I don't want a tablet and I really want to buy a mac for my next computer.

I use a mac desktop at home and love it, but I think you'll really like having the tablet function in vet school. Histology lab is done all on computer instead of microscopes, and having the tablet allows you to make notes about different cell types right on the slide. It's also useful for highlighting certain things in the power point lectures. The lectures are pretty much structured around the assumption that all the students have tablets to take notes on the slides. I'm sure that if you're absolutely devoted to the idea of having a mac instead, you could make do with it (and probably have a better computer in the long run), but it's my personal opinion that having the tablet makes life easier.

Do teachers post or send lectures ahead of time? I would just print the slides and write on the printed copy 🙂 or would that totally not work...

I'm hoping they make the iPad a little more convenient for studying so that I could use it as a tablet to transfer to my home Mac.

Other portable tablets might be compatible with Macs?

I wouldn't hold your breath on the ipad being viable anytime in the next few years for anything close to an application like that, considering what a disappointing product it currently is.

I think you can use the bamboo products as plug in tablets for the macs.

Yea, I am super pro-mac and probably will get a bamboo pen and touch if they make us get tablets... Anyone had any experience with one of those?

JUST got my letter today.. wow. not sure what happened there..

Yeah, you could do that - I've seen a couple people in class with printouts. If you're the type of person who tends to misplace things (like me), you might have better luck having everything together in one place on the computer instead of in binders. It's also nice to be able to download the lecture right before class starts instead of having to remember to do it the night before (and some teachers are better than others about posting lectures in advance). On the other hand, if you aren't religious about backing up your computer files you could have a disaster on your hands if the computer crashes. Plus, if you learn better from paper notes than computer, I would recommend doing what works for you instead of trying to change it up.

They have accessories that work on Macs to do tablet type functions (pads, stylus accessories, etc...) However, there are some programs in the teaching hospital that work only on a PC/ Windows format. If you get a virtual machine with Windows on it for your computer (or it comes installed), you can run those programs on your Mac.

There are some that don't post the notes until after the lecture, because they may have some q&a sessions about certain slides.

The times are random, at first, but if an interviewer has heard of you, they will switch so that you have someone who does not know you.

The interviews will take place in rooms all over the Basic Sciences Building.

I think they changed the timing for the information sessions, because of the new curriculum. We might need those big rooms part of the day for 😱 classes.
