University of Iowa c/o 2014!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I did but I might decline it bc I got into a school closer to home. Goodluck with your interview.

Has anyone heard from them yet? I just got an interview invite! Who else has heard from them???

DREEZY10

I haven't heard anything yet but I've decided to go elsewhere...curious though - how were you notified?

Good luck on your interview!:luck:

Yep! Of all the schools I applied to, it is my #1 choice because I think we are a good fit for each other. Iowa is an impressive school but the locale (for me) can't compare to Hawaii!😀

Received the invitation through email on the 31st. Accepted the invitation on 1st 🙂

Well I live out of state and I have done some research on the school. I heard the interview as well as the essay is very stress free. They really put in the effort to get to know you as individual instead of just a number. Just prepare yourself for the interview...🙂

Where are you from, Im from out of state as well, and having a hard time figuring out how to get there. It is expensive to fly, maybe I will drive , but weather is unpredictable at that time. How are you getting there?

yea, i also heard the interview was pretty stress free, it should be a fun experience!

Yeah it should def be a good experience. Well, I am from Florida and I heard the best way is to fly from Orlando to Cedar Rapids. Cedar Rapids is 30 minutes away from the campus.

Congrats! I got an invite as well an im putting in for the feb 20th date as my top choice. I am from Nebraska and will be driving. Look forward to seeing the campus. So far I am very impressed with how efficient and quick the school has been with the application process.

hi,
i got the invitation on dec 31st as well and they arranged date on Feb 6th, not my first choice but it's good anyhow. I also applied to Drake U in Des Moines but haven't heard anything from them. Does anybody know how the interview at U of Iowa goes? what question do they ask us? and what the essay is about?

I got my interview invite last Friday. Confirmed my interview for the afternoon session on 2/20. I'm from San Diego, CA.....hope to see some of you there 🙂

Hey guys! i am a first year pharmacy student at University of Iowa right now...just wanted to tell you guys congrats on getting the interview invites..and for those of you who haven't heard back yet, just relax! i was soooooo late on getting my interview invite and i was freaking out! i had to interview on the very last day and was really worried! just know that the whole interview process is extremely laid back and relaxed...they are really just trying to see your personality! so just be personable and yourself and you will be fine! i am actually going to be sitting in on some of your interviews and will be helping to give tours that day, so will def see some of you there! best of luck 🙂

yea, i saw you on last years forum, posting in jan, and you aint get in until March or april, lol. thanks for the interview advice, sounds like you are doing well at the school.

Hi,

I will be interviewing in Iowa on Feb. 6th any suggestions on where to stay? Is shuttle service available from the airport to any hotels near the school?

***I need a beta-blocker!!! :scared::scared::scared::scared::scared::scared:

I am interviewing Feb 27 AM. My big question is about the two essays. What are the general topics or specific topics?

I live in Coralville, right next to Iowa City. This is a great place to be except for the cold.

Good Luck to everyone!!!

I got an interview invite for Feb 27 at 8:30 am

One of my professors is an Iowa alumni (not from the pharmacy school) and after they won a big football game would comment on that the next monday. Since it was Buffalo and no one went to Iowa, he would usually get a bunch of blank faces but he was enthusiastic anyway. Maybe since it is Iowa, he will not be so angry that I am always skipping his class due to interviews

My interview date is Feb. 20 in the afternoon! Anyone else interviewing that time???

I will also be interviewing on February 20th in the afternoon! Maybe I will see some of you there. Best of luck everyone.

Yep, I am going to be there February 6th in the afternoon. I am coming from Indianapolis so it is a short 5 hour drive from my place. But I do plan on spending the night just to make sure I won't have weather problems.

Hope to see everyone there, good luck and show them you're AWESOME! 😀

Tiffany

Since I got into a school closer to home, I was debating whether to decline the interview or not. Since it's a really good school, I decided to at least check it out. While it might cost money to fly out there, it can't hurt.

Interviewees on the 6th unite! This should be fun! can't wait to meet everyone, good luck!!!!!

Good luck to everyone interviewing this month! I'm a P3 at Iowa so if you have any questions, feel free to ask me!

Hey pharmk011,

I got the interview invite from UI and I have a GPA of 3.77 but my PCAT composite is 49. I have very low scores in Verbal and Reading comprehension because English is not my first language but others are 70+. So, do I have any chances of being accepted? Please give your frank opinion about it.

Hoe hard/easy is it to get residency for out of state students?

If you mean for tuition purposes, the simple answer is it's not easy. You would essentially have to defer starting pharmacy school until the following year. In the meantime, you'd have to move to Iowa for the current year and obtain residency.

The longer, more detailed, answer can be found here (Q12):

Don't sweat it too much.

The fact that you got an interview invite says that they see potential in you since only about 300 get invites. There are a few people in my class that don't speak english as their first language. I'm not sure what their PCAT scores were, though. You have a legitimate reason for your lower score in those areas so I wouldn't stress about it. PCATs aren't everything anyway. A lot of people perform poorly on standardized tests. There are several people that I know of, who did poorly on their PCAT, and still got accepted. As long as you shine in other areas and do well on your interview, you should have a good shot.

Your chances are a little better than 1 in 3 without even doing the interview yet, so that's a pretty good start 👍. If you really want to break it down, it's about a 1 in 2 chance since they've been making about 150 offers or so the past few years. Think positive and good luck! 🙂

I definitely agree with this. The PCAT is just one part of your application. Iowa does a pretty good job of looking at the whole applicant. Your GPA is good. If you have other things that will boost your application (previous pharmacy work/volunteer experience, good letters of rec, other EC involvement), that will help too.

Thanks. Oh well. I guess if I attend Iowa I'll just be paying them a boatload of money

Thanks kinipela35 and pharmk011 for boosting my morale👍. This helped me to think towards the positive side of my strength than crying on weakness. I have good LORs, a job shadowing experience in UI Hospitals and Clinics and some volunteering work, so I guess I'm good to go🙂

Interviewed yesterday...Went well but I was really nervous. Wasn't too impressed with the facilities but the faculty and staff seemed nice. Anyone know when we can expect to hear back at the soonest?😕

March is probably the soonest you'll hear back (after all interviews are completed). I'm not sure if anyone heard back sooner than that last year. Usually March and April are when they send out emails/letters. Overall, everyone should pretty much hear something, one way or the other, by May 1st.

I agree some of the facilities could use a reno (the attached S building is already fairly new), but the school has been around forever so I'm sure that will come in time. It's a process and there is already a bunch of construction going on in other areas of the campus.

I had my interview on Feb 6th as well.... AWWWESSSSSSSSOMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! It jumped up to became my #1 choice, and I have a couple more interviews to go to. But the interviewers were sooo nice, the students were great, and the Dean was ... he was tired at the end of the day but still great. 👍
Yes the building was a bit on the old side, but honestly it is not the building it is the professors...and on top of that the "degree mills" have the brand new building to make up for this lack of reputation.... I think they have a GREAT mix of everything. They have a great curriculum and progressive on how they keep the lectures updated, the largest teaching hospital feet away from them...I could go on...
Way to go Iowa! Now I just hope they will accept an out-of-state student!! 🙄 :xf:

Glad you had a good experience. I agree, the people here are awesome. I am from out of state too and UIC was actually my first choice originally. After the interviews, though, I quickly changed my mind and couldn't be happier.

Good luck! 🙂 👍

It says the interview will last from 8:30 to noon. There will be a 30 minute interview, the essays will take 30 minutes and a tour. So that's an hour plus the tour. What will be doing the rest of the time?

How long you're there really depends on the schedule you end up being assigned to. Some people are out of there in a couple hours and some stay the entire time because they are one of the last interviews.

I'm not sure how this year is set up, but usually in between, you have time to talk to other candidates. The asst dean also makes an effort to speak with everyone in small groups throughout the day. It gives you an extra opportunity to ask questions and get to know everyone.

I just interviewed on saturday and here is how it works: you get a "personal schedule" which essentially split everyone into 3 groups: interview, essay, and tour. you will spend an hour at each station and then move on to the next station. The interview portion is split into 30 mins for personal interview and 30 mins where the associate dean tells you about the school and answers any questions. The essay portion is about 10-15 minutes of introduction and explaining how you write the essay and then 30 mins to write 2 essays. After you will have a little time to wait and talk to others. The tour was lead by current students that tell you about their personal experiences and also answer questions while showing you around the building. As long as you don't have the last interview time slot, you will probably get out 30 mins early.
Hope this helped and good luck to all.

By the way for those that interviewed on 2-6, there will be a committee meeting on monday to finalize the review of your application. The way it was explained, if you are in the "automatic admit" category (ie you excel in nearly every category including gpa, pcat, references, interview, etc) you may be notified as early as this week via email! Otherwise if you don't hear anything you are probably somewhere in the middle and they will wait until they have reviewed the apps from 2-21 and 2-27 before making a decision.

What's Iowa's Acceptance Rate or requirements such as GPA and PCAT scores? What did you guys have in order to get accepted or at least interviewed? Does a BS degree help in for a acceptance or an interview?

I found a video about becoming a resident on the iowa website. Basically if you follow their guidelines, which are pretty simple, you can be paying in-state tuition for year 2 and beyond.

It's easy if you aren't in the pharmacy program. But, since that's what all of you are looking at, you essentially won't be able to get residency for tuition purposes. You can't be enrolled more than half-time for 12 months. Pharmacy is full time. You would have to wait another year to start the program. I know someone here that did that, but personally I didn't want to wait an extra year to start as I'm sure you guys probably don't either.

Yeah that's what I thought.

Not sure what you mean by acceptance rate, but if you're looking at probability, it's about 1 in 8. For out-of-staters, it's tougher. Preference seems to be given to Iowa residents (because it's a state school) so if you're from out of state, having that degree definitely helps your chances.
