Warning: purely second-hand info:

One of the fellows here did her residency there, and she said she loved it. The hours were good (55-60), the experience was great (she did over 500 blocks while there), and the town was apparently better than expected. That said, it's still central Kansas. Don't get your hopes up too much. 😛

Interviewed there now 6 years ago.....OMG im getting old. Sounds like they have cleaned house with which is good. That was the only interview where I almost walked out 1/2 way through. These two attendings pimped the $#!* out of me, took turns questioning my integrity, my dedication to anesthesia, my political beliefs, my feelings about CRNA's( when i have a nice politically correct answer they basically got pissed and called Bullsh@#). Then they asked me to convince them that I could handle the stress anesthesia and that I could keep up with them at work...........I would love to talk to the two A-holes now😀 The progam director at the time was totally the opposite, really nice guy. The residents did not seem happy. 13 interviews(i couples matched) and I had no experience anywhere near that at any other institution

Again this was a long time ago. It sounds like there have been a lot of changes. I just couldnt resist posting because I everytime I hear about Wichita I think of that interview day.👎

You should take my post with a pinch of salt, as my mentor kept mixing up the program with some other program when I talked to him today, so he might not know the PD in question well. My personal feeling about the PD was very pleasant, and all the residents i talked to liked him. The only problem with this program is the location. I would rank the program high if it were in a better location.

If you're looking to stay in Kansas, I think you might be better off at KU-KC. It's a solid program and wouldn't hesitate ranking it high. I interviewed at Wichita, but that was last year with the old PD. It's funny that someone mentioned that 2 attendings grilled them in their interview. Although I wouldn't say I was grilled, but it was kind of awkward because the interviewers didn't seem very prepared and they kept interrupting each other.

Edit: I was asked about my views in regards to CRNA's at KU-KC, but he wasn't being malignant. He just wanted you to choose a position and be able to support it with an intelligent conversation.

I know the new PD personally, and I can say he is a great guy. I'm actually heading home to Wichita to join his group after I complete my CCM fellowship this year and he is a big reason why.

I can't comment much on the current state of the program or its residents but I can say that I'm really looking forward to being a part of it as an attending.

My interview experience there was middle or the road. There were two interviews, one with the program chair, Dr. McKay, and another with the program director and co-director, Drs. Walker and Salgado. I felt the chair asked some off the wall questions which didn't necessarily flow with the interview, but I was nevertheless able to answer. The program directors seemed genuinely interested in knowing why I was considering Wichita and if I had any ties to the area. Other than that their questions were standard and their demeanor was friendly.

As far as the program being malignant, I did not get that impression. The residents seem to work about the same as what most programs I have seen do (55hrs/wk or so). They have plenty of didactics. In fact they are let out every afternoon around 4pm I believe to have lectures. Some prefer early morning lectures while some like afternoon. Myself, I prefer the later so it was a bonus to me.

The program is very small having only 5 residents/year. If considering this program you must be able to work well in such a small group. There are advantages to this and disadvantages. You will definitely get one on one attention from attendings in this setting. For me a small or medium sized program is best but not everyone will feel this way.

Wichita is in fact in the great state of Kansas and therefore comes with all the marvels of a great plains environment. That is to say, it does leave something to be desired. But, I will tell you that this was one of the few interviews my significant other could make and together we had an awesome time.

I will probably rank this program in the middle of the pack. If I ended up there I know I would come out well trained and prepared for anything.

That was my exact feeling when I met him. He seemed like a real nice guy and the residents agree. Like I said in my post, the only thing I don't like about the program is the location. My mentor was probably mixing the program up with another one as he kept referencing the wrong PD name. This is why we should all go by what we see and hear from people actually in the programs.
