My interview experience there was middle or the road. There were two interviews, one with the program chair, Dr. McKay, and another with the program director and co-director, Drs. Walker and Salgado. I felt the chair asked some off the wall questions which didn't necessarily flow with the interview, but I was nevertheless able to answer. The program directors seemed genuinely interested in knowing why I was considering Wichita and if I had any ties to the area. Other than that their questions were standard and their demeanor was friendly.
As far as the program being malignant, I did not get that impression. The residents seem to work about the same as what most programs I have seen do (55hrs/wk or so). They have plenty of didactics. In fact they are let out every afternoon around 4pm I believe to have lectures. Some prefer early morning lectures while some like afternoon. Myself, I prefer the later so it was a bonus to me.
The program is very small having only 5 residents/year. If considering this program you must be able to work well in such a small group. There are advantages to this and disadvantages. You will definitely get one on one attention from attendings in this setting. For me a small or medium sized program is best but not everyone will feel this way.
Wichita is in fact in the great state of Kansas and therefore comes with all the marvels of a great plains environment. That is to say, it does leave something to be desired. But, I will tell you that this was one of the few interviews my significant other could make and together we had an awesome time.
I will probably rank this program in the middle of the pack. If I ended up there I know I would come out well trained and prepared for anything.
