University of Kentucky, Class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
ok... not really concerned about a 5 minute walk... maybe it is because i have lived in lexington for 4 years...

So welcome to lexington. Anything under a 20 minute walk is a "short" walk. People will consider you lazy if you drive just about anywhere for under 5 minutes.

Hey, I called it a hassle, not impossible.

I live in Louisville now and I walk 30 minutes to work. 3/4 miles is not a big deal, but it's probably annoying when you forget a book or something.

Anyway, Go UK! Here's hoping they do well in the SEC Tourney!

Hi to all! I was accepted in late Jan. but just now decided to post anything. This is actually the first time I've posted on SDN. My fellow UK undergrads can probably back me up on this but I've done a lot of walking here because the campus is so spread out. The medical campus is also spreading out so it is a little hassle to walk from the COM to the hospital but it's definitely worth it. I love the new COM buildings. Some of the students said they like to go to WT Young library, which is also a pretty decent walk from the medical campus. I can't wait to meet everyone!

Hey Jamo, I am from Ohio, too. Lived in the Powell area right off of 315. Anyways, I live about 3 minutes from UK's campus in an apartment within an old house. There are a couple of efficiencies here for around $500 (including utilities). It's a great house...very quiet and great for studying. It's downtown right by Rupp Arena. I lived at the Mansion Apartments last year on the other side of Nicholasville rd, and I love this area so much better. Nicholasville rd is a bear in the mornings and afternoons! Concerning rent, the lowest you're probably going to find is $450, and those places aren't exactly desirable. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about specific places or areas!

I concur with TheMagicCookie about rent in the area. I live in an apartment bike distance from campus, 1bed/1 bath that's 500 with a student discount and includes everything but electric. But after a year and half I'm tired of it.

Any 2nd or 3rd years with heads up on what UK COM will be like for firsties?

Not sure I can answer, but if you have specific questions you can ask me.

I know a couple of first years that may know things I don't about their coursework.

Congrats to all of you!

The 2009-2010 tuition for UK is up another 9%, it is now $53639, I had my mind set on UK, now I have second thought, I am regret I turned down some of my interviews. I now will keep an interview with one of the Ohio schools which will allow in-sate tuition after first year. Only medical school tuition at UK increased so much, the other programs only up 5%, why?:scared:

That's a big increase, but won't it stay the same each year because of the tuition guarantee? Some other schools will increase every year. On the other hand, that Ohio school allowing in-state after one year sounds pretty good.

Darn U.S. News! The number they reported seems to match what a much earlier class($44,193) paid, not what students paid 2007-2008 as they say. Now, from UK's website and the increase brought up in this thread, I see now that tuition will be almost $54,000! That's $40,000 I didn't know I would have to pay if I went here! Am I reading U.S. News and UK's websites correctly?

Does anyone have a link to an article with the 9% increase? I agree with jamo that the board hasn't set the increase yet. Last year they increased undergraduate tuition 9% and I read in the school paper earlier this week they have locked it to 5% this year. That's for undergraduates though, I don't know if it's the same.

I'm an M2 (soon to be rising M3) at UK and although there are aspects about med school I HATE, I thank God I decided to go to school here (especially after listening to friends at other schools describe their experiences). The block scheduling is great first year - you're able to really focus on one area or two at a time. Having multiple blocks instead of just two semesters also made the year go by much faster.

It was also nice being out of class for the day by noon (if not earlier) 80-85% of the time last year and probably 60% of the time this year - you have huge chunks of time to study which is great if you're a good self-learner.

As for specifics: anatomy is a hard start to med school (like everywhere else) and histo can be hard or easy depending on whether or not you have prior experience with it. In the second block, biochem exams are very difficult but also curved (so that most kids get B's) and genetics is much easier. The third block is just neuro - very interesting class but as M1s who took the midterm last week can tell you, pretty difficult (most kids get As or Bs though). The last block is Physiology which is the easiest - nice since it's early summer at that point and what few afternoon obligations you have are wrapped up and you can "study" by the pool after you get out at 12 if you feel like it.

That's not what they told me on the tour. They just built that brand new facility over off Leader Ave by where the new College of Pharmacy building is going up. The class room is over there, but the anatomy lab is still in the William Willard building.

You're right about it being in a different building now. I would say the walking distance is probably closer to 1/4 mile (if that) than 3/4. The tour distance may have made it seem longer than it really is because you take all of the bridges, go slower, stop in different areas on the way, etc.

I'm personaly glad my class was the last to have lectures in the older building closer to the lab (and the main lounge, hospital, library, etc). Granted, first years now have a newer and renovated classroom and are much closer to the administration/student affairs than the rest of us, so it's a trade off.

Thank you very much...looking forward to it all....

Hi to all! I was accepted in late Jan. but just now decided to post anything. This is actually the first time I’ve posted on SDN. 👍👍👍👍 That walk freshmen year from K-tower to CB was BRUTAL in the winter... hence me not going... hence my subpar knowledge of "culture and politics of the 3rd world"!!!

do most med students live in the immediate vicinity? would I be crazy to live outside New Circle or even Man O War?

i've been using Apartment Finder and haven't really seen much in the UK area that is under $450/month/person. is this typical of Lexington rental properties/apartments?

Yes, yes, yes, respectively. Driving from Manowar or down limestone in general sucks and is to be avoided like the plague. Man of war and new circle are not far out (geographically), and sometimes you can get good deals on housing. But in general, it is not worth the saved cash imo.

Also, 450/mo/p is a bit much. I pay 360/mo and my roomies pay 320/mo. With utilities... around 440/mo total, and I live 10 mins walking from campus (great). Shop around. Do NOT stay at Royal Lexington Apts!!!! It is cheap, and nice, but loud. Campus downs and university village are cheap(usually), close, and quiet. Lots of housing options.

Probably going to find is $450, and those places aren't exactly desirable. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about specific places or areas!

I disagree with that. But depends on what you are looking for. If anyone wants to see our place (or get a beer ), PM me.

Does anyone know the parking situation for MS1s? (As in: $ for permit, location of parking, etc.)

Most M1&2s park at the football stadium on the Alumni Drive side. It's a 15-20 minute walk if you like being outdoors - otherwise there's a shuttle that runs all day/night from that particular lot to the medical center. During the busier times of the day (early mornings, late afternoons) they usually have busses lined up or arriving every minute or so, so there's never a long wait to board a bus at either stop. The main drop-off point for the med center is the HSRB building (back of the med center near the VA hospital) - about a 2 minute walk once inside to the M2 classroom but probably 5-8 minutes or so for the M1s. They were talking about developing a shuttle just for M1s to use earlier this year that would end at the KY Clinic (near the new C.O.M building) - not sure if that happened or not.

Also, if you like to work out, you can try to get a C3 permit which would put you in the parking garage beside the Johnson Center (gym) - a 5 minute walk to the HSRB building (where the stadium shuttle drops off). That's what a lot of second years do. Student Affairs usually just tells students to purchase "K" permits (stadium) and most students don't know that C3 is an option, but it is.

As for prices, unless they change it this year, they're all the same regardless of which type you buy. Last year they were around $235 for the year I believe so look for them to be at or near that again this year.

The good news is that you have until late August to figure it out. Only a few lots on campus are patrolled during the summer (all the "E" lots and a few "R" lots) so you can park very close to the med center those first few weeks that we're in school when undergrads aren't yet.

If any of you soon-to-be docs are looking to buy a townhome in Lexington, let me know.

what do you guys think of Omni place studios? I have read a couple of reviews online, and it seems to be nice, but, do any of you live there, or have some first hand knowledge?

hey..If anybody needs or knows someone who needs a roommate beginning in fall, please email me at [email protected]. I live in Louisiana, and its kinda hard to find something good over the internet.

Ok... So I don't/haven't lived there... but you are probably out of walking distance because of the railroad that runs through (you'll see when you get here... its a Berlin wall of sorts), but you COULD bicycle it, closest route being Waller, which is not recommended (You will get to the hospital, but it may be the ED instead of the Medschool building thanks to Lexington's many terrible drivers). So you will probably have to drive... or you can walk/bike to Virginia. Probably 15 minute bikeride either way, but if you go Virginia, you can at least have a sidewalk. The place looks fine btw. Hope this helps.

Good news is your on Broadway instead of Limestone... so traffic won't destroy your life.

Are Loans the only type of aid that UK gives out ?

Did someone get any grant/scholarship?

Hey gang. Congrats on getting in! I decided to rent a nice 1BR my first year. It’s in Chevy Chase, which is an awesome quiet neighborhood close to campus. This year I’m looking to live more economically however, which means I need a roommate. I’m a studious guy, originally from Peru, been vegetarian/vegan going on 8 years, and other random tidbits as well. I also want to live within biking distance of campus. You know, you gotta find an excuse to stay fit, somehow. If this sounds interesting, send me an e-mail ([email protected]).

Hi guys, If anyone needs a place to live we are looking for one roommate to share a 3 bedroom/ 2 bath apartment. The apartment is at one of the Cravens Properties right across the street from campus. The apartment is going to run around 350 dollars a month including all utilities.

There two of us staked into this apartment already. We're both going to be M1s in the fall, farily quiet, easy to get along with, out of state students..etc. Drop me a line or an email if you're interested. (925) 303-6385 or [email protected]. I'm available by phone anytime after 6:00 Pacific time.

Good luck to everyone who'll be starting here in August! I'm a rising M3, and I've absolutely loved it here.

To whoever asked about living near Man O War: I did that my first year, and I didn't have a traffic problem at all. It probably took me 10-15 minutes to drive to school and park, then another 5-10 to catch the bus. I would leave my apartment between 7:20-7:30 for 8AM classes, and I was never late. It was important for me to have some distance away from the hospital, which is why I chose what I did. However, then I got married and moved to the other side of town near the mall where it's still a 10-15 minute drive to school. Neither place was a problem.

I echo KYMan's experience, I love being out around 12. However, I feel like that gets over-emphazised because there's 2 or so afternoons a week where you have afternoon obligations that can run until 3 or 4. During your M2 year, your afternoon time gets cut a little more, but it's still a lot of free study time, so that's nice. I'm definitely glad I went here over anywhere else, even as an OOS.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask them...
