Thanks for the help, Whoabundy and Nobraces! 🙂 I think I'll take the next month to figure this all out. I can't believe school starts in just a few months. August 1st is so early!

it does seem early. anyone have an idea of how long orientation is? Tues-Fri maybe?

I'm living in DC right now ...planing on moving to Baltimore in mid-June. If any fellow DC people want to get together in the next few weeks i'm all for it.

I looked at the schedule for orientation last year that's online and it said it was an all week ordeal. The last day is where you have lunch and wear your college t-shirt. I believe we take some cool intro seminars during the week like cpr and effects of tobacco, etc. (at least that's what they did last year). I'm not sure though.

ah, pretty likely that it will be similar. thanks

How about Sat April 29th in DC. We could meet at Tony and Joes around 6 or 7. Or if anyone has a better suggestion...

depending on how many people show interest in meeting up, i'm pretty confident there won't be a perfect day for everyone to get together ... so if 4/29 is good for a decent group, then have at it. having said that, 4/30 is my anniversary and i'm all booked up that weekend. i'll talk to the boss tomorrow and see if i can offer something more constructive, like an alternative date to throw around.

maybe we can go nuts and try to do this a couple times before aug 1st, so we'll all have a chance or two to meet up, and see a few familiar faces at orientation. i suspect it will only get easier to arrange as we all congregate towards balmur.

anybody get the email saying the financial aid dept. needs more documentation today? I already gave them 3 things a couple weeks ago and they all said complete the last time i looked. I called them and they said I have to wait until SIMS is up and working b.c. it is down today. Anyone else get this email--- knowing you gave them the documentations already?

wait, i think i found it but it says 2005-06, not not 06-07, so is that due to the system being down?

Anyone out there?

😉

Congratulations! I really want to attend University of Maryland Baltimore's dental school.

My mother's dentist attended that school. He has nothing but high praises for that institute.

As a matter of fact, they're building a new facility, and boy are you one lucky student!

Hopefully my mother's dentist can write me a good letter of rec.

Those emails got sent out because they awarded your $$ today (but they sent out the wrong email, it was supposed to say "Check your awards online". Go online and accept your loans y'all. If you dont yet know how to, it's on the UMD financial aid page, you gotta log into SURFS and then you can check your "requirments" and then if you fulfilled them all you should get your awards.

how about the GradPLUS loan email, do we have to go to a meeting in May to use it?

Did anybody receive the $3000 grant that previous students have talked about?

I'm short too. Don't know yet where to go for the rest 😕

you're out of state for the first year as well, right berry?

i'm short by over $20 grand, is that about where other out of staters are? i'm leaning towards the gradPLUS loan to cover the rest.

anyone for may 6th instead, same time and place? disregard if the 29th plans are solidifying.

yeah, out of state for first year...i'm short a little less than 20 grand..yeah...what's the difference in this gradplus loan as opposed to a private loan (the gradplus seems to have higher rates than the student loans..??)...I'm assuming that the gradplus would be better than any private loan though?

I was actually wondering the same thing - it seems like the interest rate is pretty high. Let me know if you find out any other advantages to it. I'm in the camp of falling significantly short of my expenses, and I went with a bunch of alternative loans last year.

Hope you don't mind me butting in on your thread. 🙂

The 6th would work for me any one else?

Typo, just curious... (If you don't mind me asking) How much did you have to finance through alternative loans last year? And would you say that the majority of d-school students have to take out alternative loans?

I'm surprised by my package because my EFC was very very low but the package offered to me by the school leaves me almost $20K short. But maybe that's normal?!

For the rest of you...

Has anyone looked into interest rates yet? I"m with Typo... it seems like 8.5% is high.

http://www.wm.edu/financialaid/gradplusloan.pdf

there's a nice comparison i found. i don't think we're going to find anything comparable with the loans we've already been awarded. the key to me seems to be that the gradPLUS 8.5 is fixed, and there's a variety of other features which seem to accomadate a student well (repayment options, disability/death insured, no co-borrower, etc.). the comparison i linked says you might get away with a typical private loan with a rate as low at 7.25, but as high as 16+. With a good credit rating and income now you might get lucky, but since it's variable it seems like it's only a matter of time before 8.5 fixed is going to be more attractive. i think i'm sold on the gradPLUS.

did anyone get the health profession loan? if so, how much?

WhoooaaaBUNDY said:

I got the full $7500...

Here's another question. If we accept the initial package they are offering us now, does that mean we can't go back after May 15th to tell them we'd like to be considered for more funds should they become available?

the 6th is fine with me too !

I am pretty sure you can keep checking with them to see if there is any aid available to be handed out at anytime..even after you accept your award. However, I doubt there will be much turning up if we didn't get the full cost of attendance.

Anyone know if you get 30k for the unsubsidized stafford if you can use more than 15 for a particular semester? The reason I ask is I'm trying to dump a lot of savings and whatnot on the first semester so I won't need much $ then, but I may need over 15k of the 30 the next semester? Sorry I'm essentially inept when it comes to this financial aid stuff.

think only 15K at a time....i say get out the 15K now and put it into savings or invest...then get out the rest of the money that you need for the second semester......so if you think you will need 20K the second semester and only 5 for this semester..go ahead and get out the 15K the 1st sem., save/invest 10K, and then next semester only get out 10K

I also think you can only use 15k at a time.. I think they just divide it equally into two semesters..?

I know it's already too late, but were we as freshman eligible to apply for the Professional School Scholarship (application was due March 1st)? It says on the UMD Financial Aid website that students would be notified when the applications are available, but I don't remember ever being notified of it..

Dental school definitely costs too much $$ 😳

So who's coming to happy hr on the 6th?

Tony & Joe's
3000 K Street, NW
Washington, DC 20007

... that's the place, right? Know anything about parking? I can be there.

anyone else coming?

so should we go, or try another time? i'm taking call that weekend, so there's an outside chance i'd have to go to work, but not terribly likely. i'm game for whatever.

Wow! You are stressed out. Just take things one at a time. First things first, get through finals. The rest should be easy. After all, you did get accept to UMB 😉

If you need help with anything post on this forum or PM me directly. Hang in there!

I usually buy my textbooks online now through amazon.com. I've searched that site and found pretty much all the required books listed 😀 Amazon might actually be a tad cheaper (for new books anyway) than buying new books at the UMB bookstore.

So what are people thinkin for hppy Hr?

There will never be a date that suits everyone... We should try to coordinate a few dates throughout the summer both in DC and in Baltimore (or am I the only one in bmore?)

Having said that, I doubt I'll ever be able to make it on a weekend due to my work schedule. If I'm ever off, I'll throw a date out there and see who can join me 🙂

i'm all for it after mid june...anyone up for some world cup soccer parties?..i say everyone PM a designated person(whoever wants to volunteer) with your email address and they can put together an address book of all of our emails...therefore we can just reply back and forth through email..makes it a lot easier i would say..just a suggestion

I have a sweeeeeeeet house with rooms available for rent less than 5 minutes walk to school. Not many row-houses are this nice, trust me.

If anyone is interested in finding out more information, send me a private message and I'll give u the details.

I'm a recent grad of Maryland's dental school, and right now I'm an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery resident in another state, but I am moving back at the end of June because of family obligations.

It sounds like clp, and WhoooaaaBUNDY and I are the only ones who can do hppyhr this Sat. What do you guys think go or no go?
