I'd be up for getting together on Saturday to get a drink or lunch or something. Anyone else?

I'm totally down! Sounds awesome! Just let me know when/where. Saturday works best for me, too, although Friday night after work is a possibility.

I did the "sit in on a class" thing on a Friday in January. That wasn't massively informative, but it was good just to get a feel for what lectures will be like. What was really helpful was that Dr. Foxwell was also nice enough to set me up with a 4th-year student. She was fantastic - answered all my questions, and then took me around the hospital. This was definitely more informative than the lecture. You should contact the office and see if they can put something together...That's another thing I loved about Maryland...the admissions folks are so helpful! I was totally amazed by how involved they seemed with the process. It's obvious that they really care about their students.

OK, enough Maryland 😍 or I'm gonna need to get out my love squeegee to clean my monitor.

Hey all....just wanted to let you know when I'll be coming to town. We officially booked plane tickets for a weekend visit from Thursday April 27 to Sunday April 30. Actually, it will mostly be on that friday and saturday since the flights are late at night/early morning. So whats the story? Do you guys want to get together? I was thinking about visiting the med school campus again, so maybe if anyone else was interested we could get a group together for a tour, sit in on a class, or anything else.

Hey Suzie,

I might be intrested in revisiting UMD and sitting in on a class with you during that week/weekend. So let me know the details if you are gonna go sit in on classes and revisit the campus.

Thanx

Just got in from work. Some nurses are just a hard nut to crack. It's surely hard as hell to work with some people in this world. Amplify the small things in life and complicate every bit of thing. Well, I'm glad I won't be hanging around this place for so long again.

Ummmm I see y'all are doing some trip planning. I'll check my calendar and see if my participation will be possible. I'm just about 30-45mins from Baltimore so it shouldn't be that bad.

Lady Terps win the national title! Hell of a basketball game too. Fear the turtle!

I know! What a great game!! And they were all frickin' freshman/sophomores! And it was played better than the men's NCAA regionals and semifinals, most of which looked like sloppy neighborhood high-school pick-up games, what with all the missed shots and turnovers.

Go Lady Terps! Way to show Duke who's boss!! 🙂

Who did you contact in the admissions office to set all of this up? Just curious. Thanks!

And that's so awesome that the women's bball team won the NCAA tournament! Go Terps! I need to start stocking up on Terps gear - shirts, mugs, the whole nine yards. Anyone know a good place to shop (online or otherwise) for that stuff?

No problem. I contacted Dr. Foxwell directly, since he was my interviewer. You could probably start with him, or whoever your interviewer was. Another way would be to contact the Office of Admissions directly - I forget the name of the lady who's desk is right inside the door, but she was sooooooooo nice and helpful during both of my visits. She'd probably know how to get the ball rolling.

I pre-qualified for a home loan today. I'm so frickin' stoked. Gonna start looking for places tomorrow. Looks like I'm closing in on 100% certain about UMD. 🙂

Woot woot! Congratulations! I have no idea what that feels like, but my sister was very excited when she finally qualified for a loan.

Today was such a Maryland weather day. This morning it was cold and windy with a half clear, half cloudy sky. Soon it started to randomly pound snow. For 10 minutes. It then got completely clear and sunny and has been warming ever since.

So weird.

I wouldn't know. I haven't been outside all day. 🙁 😡

That's some bizarre weather. It was warm and sunny here in Columbia, MO (76 degrees and not a cloud in the sky). Of course we will be paying the price, since storms are likely to move in tonight which means possible tornadoes. When I drove to Kansas City last weekend you could see where the storms/tornadoes had pulled out trees and knocked down signs. Plus a lot of cars at the mall had some serious hail damage. Its some crazy **** sometimes. At least Baltimore shouldn't have tornadoes (replaced by hurricanes, of course, but I'm up for a change) 🙂

Edit - what the heck? Has SDN always censored for foul words and automatically turned them into astericks? I've never noticed this before!

I'm looking for houses right now and I can't afford ANYTHING. Even if I work full time, I still can't afford anything >$300,000. Where have you been looking?

Actually a few years ago, some tornados ripped through the College Park area. A couple UMD College Park students were killed. But don't worry, its still very rare 🙂

Grr. I hate clients that are stupid and send me nastygrams. Newsflash people - if your compound kills half of the rats on study, it doesn't matter if it also kills cancer. Death is not considered a cure for cancer. If you don't like the fact that the study report reflects that your compound kills things, perhaps you should give up on developing this compound.
Just thought you should know...my husband reads this thread from time to time, and really loved your rant here. Particularly the line "death is not a cure for cancer."

LOL well I'm glad he got some enjoyment out of it. Usually I don't take client comments or critiques personally, but this particular client has a demeanor that really gets under my skin. One of their comments on the two reports I just sent them was a general "use proper reasoning to draw conclusions." So hence the rant. 😀

Suzie what does your husband do? My husband is interested that I already know another married student where the male is NOT the medical student.

Totally! What are the odds of that? It seems like everywhere I interviewed the married med students were male.

He did his undergrad degree in English, and is currently getting a graduate certificate in personal finance. Right now he's leaning towards becoming a certified actuary (just took the first in a series of ten exams), but is open to whatever job he can get in Baltimore (possibly law school in the future, but still not sure about that).

And on a side note...whoa! Anyone watch American Idol? Mandisa just got voted off. I thought she was one of the best singers (though I didn't watch last night so I'm not sure how she performed).

Mandisa = 👎

I try not to get sucked into that crap, but it's hard. 😀

Your husband shouldn't go to law school! Ugh. The vast majority of my friends went to law school, and only about half of them honestly love what they are doing. The other half are looking to quit an go back to what the are passionate about (mostly teaching...a couple wish they had become doctors!) Those that love their jobs work at ultra-competitive firms and have no life as associates, but they are just using firm life to pay back their loans. Once they are done, they will quit and go into something that they really care about (government, policy, and the like, which means a tremendous paycut). I work at one of DC's biggest firms, and it's amazing, the amount of soul-sucking that goes on around here. I can't imagine being here as an associate.

And that's funny that it was mostly male at your interviews. I think that, at the majority of mine, it was female-dominated, or an even split. Thre were only 5 other people at my UMD interview, though, so it was hard to get a statistically significant representative sample 😀

I know that, historically, UMD has had a strong female skew...a couple years ago I think it was even as pronounced as 70/30 in terms of percentage. How's that for girl power? I think that rocks, as long as the women aren't catty with one another over stupid crap (like boys). But hopefully you're over the high-school phase by the time you get to medical school. 🙄

PS I'm meeting up with your husband today, LS! We're going to go over some B'More area properties. He and some other realtors have sent me some listings...there are some really cute places within a mile or so of the campus!!

Yeah, you noticed that too? Must be some strange cultural bias.

So when you come to town, I assume your hubby is coming too? If a group of us get together, I'll have to encourage Greg to come - if it was just crazy soon to be med students, he might bail, but if your husband is there he might be persuaded.

Terrific! He said he was meeting you today. Good luck and keep me posted (although Greg's doing a pretty good job) 🙂 Hopefully this will mean you get to be the first one to have everyone over for drinks and a housewarming party? 😀

I think we're talking about students that are married seem to be mostly male. There were definitely TONS of females at all my interviews. At my UMD interview Dr. Foxwell put it this way: "Right now the women are winning."

Yeah, he will definitely be there so bring your husband along! We'll be looking at apartments and hopefully signing a lease. So far we've decided to look at Centerpoint and Redwood, but we're not really sure which others to include in our search.

You would certainly hope they wouldn't be catty, but considering how many people my age still get stupid about stuff like that I don't have high hopes for it being non-existent. The best you can do is try not to associate too much with those kinds of women.

Ugh...I should have stayed in bed this morning. My anthropology lecture is incredibly boring! (which is probably why I am also hanging out on SDN between typing notes)

That would rock!! I'd so be down for that!

When I lived in Seattle, I would have weekly dinners with my neighbors where we would all gather at my place or one of their places (or outside in the courtyard/beach if it was nice) and cook. (One of my neighbors was a gourmet dessert chef...mmm...blueberry cheesecake!) I'd be happy to host one at my place!

PS I'm still working on our "list," but I only have info from like 7 people so far. When I get to a respectable number, I'll send it out!

Blueberry cheesecake? OMG that sounds so good! I love dinner parties, because I always eat better than I would if I was fixing something just for myself.

This is exactly why I was never able to bring my laptop to class with me. I'm just too temped to use it as a distraction! 🙂 One of my best friends is spending 50K/year to go to GW law, and she spends all of her class time playing silly comp games and IMing people.

But we are waaaaaaay more important than anthro! So, at least you have your priorities straight. 😀

Well, I dunno. It depends on what kind of anthro. I minored in it, so it has to be of at least a little importance.

But if its linguistics, you have my permission to ignore it. 🙄

Is General Anthropology...I need one more gen ed to graduate and thought anthro would be interesting. I'm sure if I qualified to take a more advanced course it would be, but we've spent the first half of the semester talking about evolution and tool making (things we discussed in depth in my Bio - Evolution class) 🙂 Now we are talking about anthropological linguistics, which normally would be an interesting topic except that my husband took linguistics classes so I've been exposed to it more in depth already, and our professor has the TA doing the lecture...so he's not very comfortable in front of the class. It's painful to watch sometimes.

Edit: well, I don't know about anthropological linguistics I guess, but the linguistics taught by the English department is pretty neat.

Ah that explains it. Intro anthro. at my undergrad was one of the top 10 recommended, but it was entirely because of the prof. His interests were in psychological anthropology, specifically deviance, so a lot of the class was taught from that perspective. Also, I went to a small liberal arts school, so there was never any TAs teaching my class. I can imagine that wouldn't be the greatest class ever.

I'm biased against linguistics. I never took an actual linguistics class, but when I took History of anthropological thought, the prof that normally taught it was away in our NYC program that semester so the linguistics prof taught it. She ended up doing it mostly from a linguistics perspective. Well that and they probably ought to have renamed her version "History of which anthropologists have slept together or with members of the native cultures they are studying." I love her as a person (she's a crazy cat lady) but utterly boring to listen in lecture to.

lol!!!

When I was at Michigan, I had a moment of panic because I realized that I needed an extra few credits in the Social Sciences in order to graduate. So I thumbed through the course catalogue for an anthro course, and thought, Intro to Archaeology sounds cool!

Man, if that wasn't the most boring course I've ever had to sit through. There's only so many kinds of rocks and tools that I can get excited about before the enthusiasm wears off. But at least now I know what flintknapping is...now my life is complete. (Or if I find myself lost in the wilds of Africa, I'll be able to fashion a pointy object with which to impale myself.)

LOL. You ought to have listened to Indiana Jones...

"So forget any ideas you've got about lost cities, exotic travel, and digging up the world. We do not follow maps to buried treasure and "X" never, ever,
marks the spot. Seventy percent of all archaeology is done in the library. Research. Reading."

OMG!!! I FRICKIN LOVE THAT MOVIE!!!

But seriously, my anthro prof was freaky. He would get all excited about some clay pots that some Leakey guy found in Olduvai Gorge like 8 bazillion years ago, and how that meant that homo-somethingorother was a really good cook. When he started rambling for the entire lecture about shards of pottery (complete with slideshow... 😴 ), that's where I would start zoning out. By the time he got to the arrowheads, I was sound asleep.

Then there was the group of kids behind me who would giggle every time he said "homo erectus."

Hello everybody, I'm SuzieQ's husband, and as she mentioned, I read this thread from time to time. Actually, I'm on here almost daily, and I've been enjoying your posts so much as of late that I thought it would be a good time to introduce myself and let you know that I'm looking forward to meeting you all soon face to face...

...I also saw that the thread was starting to slide down the page and felt it could use a boost. Go Terps. 👍

Maybe linguistics is actually boring - I must admit I've never taken a class on it. The only reason I thought it was interesting was because my husband really enjoyed those classes, so his enthusiasm for the subject probably swayed my views.
As for TAs teaching classes...this is the first lecture I've had where the prof actually lets her TA do something besides grade papers. He wasn't bad, but definitely doesn't have the same experience as a seasoned, grizzled professor.

It certainly does. I remember a time when I used to be productive while in front of the computer. Those days are long gone.

Oh man, somewhere there are anthropologists rolling over in their graves (or pitching a fit in their office) for those remarks. Aren't the Leakey's practically gods in the anthropology world? ("homo erectus" )

WooHoo!! I love pissing people off. If I can piss off lare groups of people all at once...well...then that's an added bonus. 🙂

LS, your husband was super nice! He seems like he really knows his stuff. I'm really looking forward to him helping make this process less of a headache 🙂 I never realized how many different costs are involved in homebuying. No wonder so many people rent! It's very daunting.

I'm glad things are going well! The crazy ones (IMHO) are the ones that try to sell their house without a Realtor to save a few bucks. I'd be too scared I was going to forget something in the contract! But yes, he knows whats up and I'm sure he'll take good care of you!

Counting Crows is playing at the HFStival at the end of May.

That totally ROCKS. When is it, and how much are tickets? I haven't been to HFStival in...like...years. I used to go every year when I was in high school. The best year ever was when Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees, and about 3 billion other big-name alternative bands played before they got ridiculously mainstream.

I'd go just to see CC again, though...as long as they play some of their material off of A&EA!!!!

BTW...They're still having HFStival, even though 99.1 plays latin music now?! How does that work?

PS Cypress Hill is gonna be there, too?!?! I'm sooooooo down!!!

Wait, I don't think this was HFS. This was something else.

The best HFS was the one with CC, Cracker, Toad, Violent Femmes, Meat Puppets, etc.

The second-best one was the one with Foo Fighters, Garbage, Gin Blossoms, Gravity Kills, Everclear, and No Doubt.

May 27 and 28, but CC is playing Sunday. I haven't seen them play since 2004, I miss them so much! Tickets are 45 for lawn, 65 for pavilion. They go on sale Saturday.

BTW, "WHFS" plays for like 3 hours a day on 102.7. Its a really weird arrangement.
