Geez, SC, overanalyze much? 😛

j/k, we all do stuff like that.

LW or sol,

Do you guys know the cirriculum question I asked. About the systems based?

A distinction between curriculums is "lecture-based or PBL". Within lecture-based curriculums, a further distinction can be made between a more traditional "subject-based" curriculum and a "systems-based" curriculum.

Maryland's curriculum is subject-based, as far as I can tell from the curriculum overview. I'm sure that there will be some systems-based teaching though. At least, I hope there will be... I think I'd be pretty lost without something to tie it all together.

Agape, to be honest, I don't even know what the differences between the curriculums really are. I get the overall idea (e.g. Georgetown's traditional curriculum vs. Colorado's fully integrated curriculum), but I dunno if UMD's curriculum can be considered "systems based." I think it's pretty integrated, though...we only have 2 hours of lecture, then 2 hours of small groups, and then 2 times a week we have more group stuff in the afternoons. But I'm not certain. This would be a good question for loveumms or another student.

It's magic, I tell ya! Magic!

a side note:

We've broken the 900-post threshold. Look out, Oklahoma, here we come!!

OK, looking at my friend's medscope for the first couple of blocks...
First block, S&D seems to be system based. It is anatomy, so duh, I guess?
2nd, Cell and Molecular Bio is basically all typical biochem/molecular ish. Not system based, from what I can tell.
3rd is Functional Systems, which IS system based.
Finally is Neuroscience, which is pretty refined.

It really is a mix. Doesn't fit one label.

Mixtli, you can only come if you bring a copy of the 2006 match list

I could be a misinformed/uninformed premed talking out of my arse but:

I thought that systems-based learning meant that once you learn the very basics of the various sciences, you go through each system (renal, neuro, resp, etc) and learn all about them applying the sciences with more detail. UMD does this to a limited degree but not nearly to the degree that, for example, UPenn does.

IT HAPPENED AGAIN!!! LW, are you me?!?

Yes, SC. I am your subconsious self. Now please excuse me while I catalogue my collection of toenail clippings and dance around in my month-old underwear.

Oh, as far as the curriculum goes, UMD's struck me as not being a "pure curriculum" in terms of PBL, systems, or traditional. But they are really mostly traditional. However, traditional can also imply the way the classes are structured, indicating multiple subjects (and multiple tests) at one time. I 😍 the way UMD's block scheduling generally means only one exam to worry about at any given time (excepting anything we might have for ICM).

Of course I could be talking out of my ass regarding the "mostly traditional" deal, but at some point I'm sure loveumms or someone will come along to enlighten us.

I don't think just bringing the matchlist is enough. He needs to get a shirt screenprinted with the match list and wear that to our get together.
Haha...we should all get matchlist shirts then. We'd be the coolest group in town. 😎

I'll get a shirt that says "derm-wench" on it. Have you guys heard that term yet on SDN? It cracks me up...the super-gunner.

PS. I swear I won't be a gunner!

Kickass idea, SQ! We should totally do this. We should also get different colors depending on your desired ultimate specialty...that way we can more quickly recognize & ostracise those folks interested in IM/Peds. 🙂

You all are gonna make Mix consider going into Ped's of IM now 😉. He is gonna be screaming "I love Ped's and IM. And Matchlist don't Matter" off of the roof tops.

Can we get them made up like the ones you can get for brides/grooms at bachelorette/bachelor parties? With boxes to check off?

- Do a belly shot off someone that matched in ortho
- Flash someone who matched in IM
- Grind with somone who match in anesthesiology

...etc.

DERM-WENCH?!?! Holy crap, you just made hot tea come out my nose!!

I like this idea...sort of like a scavenger hunt only with matchlists and drinking.

I'm glad it amused you. I'll admit I didn't come up with the phrase myself, but stumbled across it several months ago on the allo-forum. It had me rolling in laughter.

I think this will be something that we SDN'ers will always have to joke about. At Mix'es expense :Sorry Mix: I guess 2 years from now, on a night out, we can all (including Mix) laugh about it.

AWSOME!! Only they should be medically-related activities:
-Gave an Ob/Gyn match a breast exam
-Slipped some roofies into an anethesiologists drink
-Gave colonoscopy to IM match

Sadly, as old married ladies, I think we're going to get left out of some of these activities. LOL.
Yes, that is one of the consequences of marriage...no more bodyshots off unsuspecting strangers. But, we can still get up on the bar and dance! 😉

Just reading today's post and laughing like an fool.

Derm wench must be what IM/Peds people call their maids/sex-slaves

DERM WENCH!! FETCH ME MY SLIPPERS AND GIVE ME A BJ!

*Peds guy cries himself to sleep while snuggled with a waiting room teddy bear*

This is the song that doesn't end...
+pity+ <---- that's supposed to be me playing my violin with the song.

Poor Minnesota-Duluth and New Mexico, they have no replies 🙁

Vermont only has 1!

I have such an urge to burst into the Hopkins and Duke threads and just be like YOU ALL SUCK

That's not very nice....they might be your colleagues someday. Besides, Hopkins is in the same city, so we've gotta show a little respect.

why do you keep calling yourself "old ladies"? i had no idea 26 was considered old...

I was at the Honors Convocation for the school of music here...got a couple awards, also got passed up for a few that should have gone to me (assuming they are truly based on the objective criteria they claim to be, such as GPA)...I'm a little bitter. 😛

Once you hit 21 its all downhill from there. j/k...I'm only 23, so definitely not an old lady.
