Saturday works for me as well. I have to work late on Friday, and wouldn't make it up to B'More until late. I have to get up at 7 on Sunday, though, so I probably won't be staying too late. Perhaps I can schedule my home inspection to fall on Saturday! Then I would kill 2 birds with 1 stone!! 🙂

What time were we thinkin'? 7? 8? Later?
Anytime works fine for us that Saturday, since we can schedule things around it. I will add, however, that our flight on Sunday leaves at 7:15 am. Does this mean that I won't stay out late? Not necessarily. 😉 But I might try and limit the amount of drinking I do, since hangovers and flying don't mix particularly well.

You know it.

Newsflash, we are almost sub-300 posts behind Oklahoma. We have absolutely obliterated our competition (though I don't know if they are aware they are in a competition!) and we are buzzsawing our way to #1!

HELL YEAH!!!!

And I second SQ's idea about the drunken 100-meter dash. 👍

Let's make it an earlier evening on Saturday if we've all got Sunday commitments...I should be free anytime.

OK, gonna leave work here in a bit. I'll try to find some time before I go to bed to reach my posting quota. I don't know if I've hit 5 yet today.

Happy Wednesday! Today I will be leaving for Salt Lake City...our orchestra is playing at the national music teacher's convention there. Nothing like a school sponsored vacation (well, except maybe the fact that I will constantly be surrounded by 60+ band and string nerds...lol)

Wednesday. That means we're now on our way out of the woods. Excellent.

Has anyone else looked at SURFS today? My financial aid seems to have completely disappeared (and for that matter, the entire 2006-2007 year). Anyone else see this?

Mine has disappeared as well.

I'm not saying that this is the reason why, but: I called the financial aid office on Monday because I had some questions about my package. The lady I spoke with told me that the aid assessment/evaluation won't be complete until around mid-May and that we will receive notification by email once aid packages are complete.

Oops...I already accepted mine.

I guess that was just a false alarm? 😕

Maybe this means they'll give me more money....I know, I know, wishful thinking. 🙂

Booo..they best not take away mah cash! If they give me more though, cool! I had accepted mine as well. Mid-May? WTF for? No other schools seem to need until mid-May,

Hey

Did they say the packages may decrease or go down. Were the packages we recieved wrong?

Oops, looks like I inadvertantly triggered financial aid worries. I called the f.a. office on Monday to ask them for more financial aid.

The conversation went something like:
Me: Give me more moneyz.
Lady: The financial aid packages aren't complete yet.
Me: Do you know when they will be?
Lady: Oh, um... I don't know... mid-May?
Me: How will I know when they're complete?
Lady: You should receive an email from us.

So from my conversation, it *seems* like 1) whatever financial aid you had will still be intact in the final package (if anything, it should increase) and 2) the lady wasn't very sure about the mid-May completion date (hopefully it's earlier).

Sorry for causing a slight stir.

The despot's heel is on thy shore,
Maryland!
His torch is at thy temple door,
Maryland!
Avenge the patriotic gore
That flecked the streets of Baltimore,
And be the battle queen of yore,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Hark to an exiled son's appeal,
Maryland!
My mother State! to thee I kneel,
Maryland!
For life and death, for woe and weal,
Thy peerless chivalry reveal,
And gird they beauteous limbs with steel,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Thou wilt not cower in the dust,
Maryland!
Thy beaming sword shall never rust,
Maryland!
Remember Carroll's sacred trust,
Remember Howard's warlike thrust,-
And all thy slumberers with the just,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Come! 'tis the red dawn of the day,
Maryland!
Come with thy panoplied array,
Maryland!
With Ringgold's spirit for the fray,
With Watson's blood at Monterey,
With fearless Lowe and dashing May,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Come! for thy shield is bright and strong,
Maryland!
Come! for thy dalliance does thee wrong,
Maryland!
Come to thine own anointed throng,
Stalking with Liberty along,
And chaunt thy dauntless slogan song,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Dear Mother! burst the tyrant's chain,
Maryland!
Virginia should not call in vain,
Maryland!
She meets her sisters on the plain-
"Sic semper!" 'tis the proud refrain
That baffles minions back again,
Maryland!
Arise in majesty again,
Maryland! My Maryland!

I see the blush upon thy cheek,
Maryland!
For thou wast ever bravely meek,
Maryland!
But lo! there surges forth a shriek,
From hill to hill, from creek to creek-
Potomac calls to Chesapeake,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Thou wilt not yield the Vandal toll,
Maryland!
Thou wilt not crook to his control,
Maryland!
Better the fire upon thee roll, Better the blade, the shot, the bowl,
Than crucifixion of the soul,
Maryland! My Maryland!

I hear the distant thunder-hum,
Maryland!
The Old Line's bugle, fife, and drum,
Maryland!
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb-
Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum!
She breathes! she burns! she'll come! she'll come!
Maryland! My Maryland!

Good God, Coz! Bored much? 🙂

I especially like the part about the "Northern scum".

I had no idea the song was that long...I remember having to learn a couple verses in grade school. I don't think I've heard it since. 🙂

Between SDN, email, and various homebuying-related activities (e.g. contacting lenders, calling to set up inspections, speaking with insurance companies, etc.), I'm averaging about 2.5 hours of actual work per day. Pretty sad, considering I'm generally at the office from 8:30am to 7pm. 😱

I think I spend an aweful lot of time spacing out.

God, am I ready to go back to school and get the hell out of the "real world" again 🙂

PS, if anyone is interested in the 10K on Sunday morning in Rockville, here's the link:

Actually, I have to go back to work now, I just wanted to pop in and hear the crickets chirping 😉

You're doing a great job, Coz! Hold down the fort!

Hey guys, is it me or did UMaryland's 2006 matchlist not seem very impressive (way too many peds/IM) but lots of of orthro.

Not trying to diss UMD, (which is one of my top choices by the way) and not trying to get any of you hardcore Terps to drop their acceptance.

You can't fault a class for wanting to go into Peds or IM. If that's what they wanted, then that is where they belong. Scanning through the list, several matched very well. Then again, the only thing that makes the match process bearable is the fact that everyone has their own agenda. (i.e. wants to be near family, wants to go back home, wants to live in the northwest, etc.) Anyway, I matched with U of Md, so I don't know who or why I'm defending. 😳 (I occassionally scan this thread in case someone throws out housing ideas, as I'm not from the area.)

I think it's all relative. UMD is one of those schools that is big into promoting primary care. I think this class was probably just a larger reflection of that objective than some of the other years with match lists posted. But I think their facilities and teaching staff, curriculum, etc. are set up to allow you to pursue whatever really interests you. As someone else said, several in 2006 matched well in competitive specialties. In previous years, this appears to also be true. I don't have a problem with the match list. I think it reflects what students wanted, rather than what limited them.

Yes, its going to take a miracle to get off UMD's waitlist. Then again, looking at UMD's matchlist kinda turned me off because I don't want to go into peds and orthro, but I loved UMD on interview day.

Also, I would like to point out that I am obviously NOT an insider at my company. Given that for some reason the stock is down 65 cents this morning. Sigh.

Make that 81 cents so far. Good thing I didn't take your "insider" rip...I mean tip. There was some news this morning about "widening 1st quarter losses" for your company just in case you missed it. But I'll keep my eye on the stock price. Sometimes these penny stocks can rebound quite nicely 😀

Actually I'm listening to the webcast conference call right now. Basically everything that happened this quarter was on target with the guidance given at the end of 2005. We did increase our business backlog (signings, work to be done) by 35% from the end of 2005 (from 16 mil to 22 mil), which also I believe exceeded our expectations for new signings in the quarter. That was what I was expecting to increase the stock price.

The majority of the issues were with the genomics division, which I do not work for. The Q1 loss was wider than last year Q1 which is where they measure the loss. This was expected based on the extremely robust Q1 we had in 2005.

They way the tox business works is that signing new business (increase in backlog) is not the same as actually getting paid. We do not get paid until milestones are met. The usual ones are: 1) study completion (there may also be a half-way point on sub chronic and chronic studies) 2) delivery of the draft report and 3) finalization of the study. In addition, Q1 revenue in preclinical tox is almost a direct result of the amount of work signed in Q4 of the previous year. Historically, Q4 signings are not as good as those in the rest of the year because our clients are at the end of their budgets and wait until Q1 to sign new work.

So I admit I was wrong about the stock price going up. But I don't consider the earnings negative or unexpected. We are definitely still a venture capital company - last year was the first year the genomics side made any money and the company as a whole is not profitable, in large part because of the amount of $$ being invested in the drug repositioning service. But we're on track to be profitable in 2007, which is what management has been reporting and forcasting on for a couple years now.

So definitely still keep an eye on it. Preclinical tox isn't sexy, its just work that needs to be done. Genomics is interesting and once they fully transistion to their new business model they'll be rolling again. DRS is what you want to watch. New indications for old drugs = big $$$.

I'm done with my defensive rant now. 😀

The whole match list thing = 🙄

It's interesting to see where people go, but I don't think it's an indication of what you can't do/are obligated to do. Obviously UMD focuses on primary care. That's never been a secret. But historically, only 50-60% of the class goes into a PC residency. If you look at the stats for some of those "top 10" schools, you'll see the same percentages. I don't really know what an "impressive" match is, vs. an "OK" match, or even if there is any such gradation. It's hard to give more merit to an ortho residency than an IM or peds residency. It's like comparing apples and oranges.

I believe that UMD matches so many people into its own programs because the students really love it there. The 4th-year student who took me around during my "second-look" was in the process of ranking her choices for residency (IM), and she was listing UMD as her first choice, even over programs like Columbia. There also seemed to be a good mix of interests - I spoke with 4th years applying in ortho and neurology, and they both said that they felt extremely prepared by UMD, and were completely satisfied with their education.

UMD will prepare you to do whatever you want to do, as long as YOU are willing to put in the work. You can't squeak by and expect to get your top choice of residencies...but, then again, there aren't many places where you would be able to do that. I plan to work hard, do well, and go wherever/do whatever I want in 4 years. Not much more to it than that. 🙂

 Well said. Good post.

Thank you, my dear. 🙂 It's just something I feel strongly about.

Did anyone else just get an email from UMB's financial aid office?

I got ANOTHER one of these letters today:

Thank you for applying for financial aid at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. We received your 2006-2007 electronic student aid report (SAR) from the U.S. Department of Education. However, we require additional documentation from you.

However, when I go into "student requirments" as i am instructed to do, 2006-2007 is not available! What other requirements do they need? I've already filled in all the requisite forms...or so I thought.

😕

Well, its pretty much a given that any ortho residency is going to be more competitive than maybe all but the best peds. Just the nature of the beast. However, a match list in any given year is tempered by its student's desire for competitive residencies as well as their ability or inability to get them. There's no way to tell. Match lists are pretty ambiguous, and not that useful, IMO.

BTW, you'll see people matching at the same place they went to school all the time at big centers. Ohio State's match list had a TON of people matching at OSU.

So who wants to be the first to call the FA office and ask why the packages appeared and then disappeared - esecially for those that had already accepted them? 🙂

I guess it was me (the impatient, neurotic thing coming out again).

The woman I spoke with said they still needed to award some other schools, and they also wanted to finish some other things within the packages before allowing everyone to see them.

She also said they'd probably be back up late today or tomorrow. She said it wasn't a problem if you'd already accepted the package. She did not say whether anyone would be getting more aid either way.

Dear UMB Financial Aid Lady:

It has come to my attention that you have not yet finalized your financial aid packages for the 2006-2007 school year. I would like to take this opportunity to petition you for more aid for the following incoming medical students, as we, upon graduation, will be facing a lifetime of student debt, malpractice insurance and suits, and expensive repairs for the massively oversized homes, cars, and boats that we are expected to buy to perpetuate the appearance of the "physician lifestyle."

First and foremost is yours truly. I would like more money because, let's face it, I don't like spending money. Especially money that I don't have. I know that there's money somewhere in Maryland. I know because the state of Maryland took 98.348% of my income during the 2005 tax year. I don't know where this money goes. I heard that Governor Ehrlich withdraws it all in $100 bills and has a dump truck deposit it on his bed so he can roll around with 3 supermodels and have lots of hot sex on top of huge piles of cash. Apparently that works better than Viagra for ED.
So, like I said, there's definiely money somewhere in Maryland. If my 5 bazillion dollars in taxes can be used to treat Bob Ehrlich's ED, don't you think a small percentage of that could go to subsidize my medical education? Especially since I will be working basically for free for the next 4 years in your state's hospitals?

If you do not give me more money, I will be forced to hide in your closet until a most inopprotune time (e.g. 3am), upon which I will exit said closet and proceed to scare the bejeezus out of you. Did I mention that I look like a scary clown?

Please also give the following students more money: Cozmosis, LucidSplash, SuzieQ. They are the ones who have posted the most on SDN and have therefore been giving UMB free advertising. The average advertising executive in this area makes roughly 386,000 per year. That means you should give all 3 of them free rides. So, actually, you're making money here if you subtract all of their scholarships from the free advertising.

I hope that you will seriously consider my requests. If you don't, I will be very, very upset and forced to expose Governor Ehrlich's ED problem on the 5 o'clock news. Furthermore, you don't want to upset a scary clown. Believe me.

While you're at it, can I get a pony, too?

I just came from the FA office (finally dropping off the hundreds of supporting documents they supposedly need), and the lady said they're busy working on awards for the SOM today, and everything should be on line tomorrow.

Then she said "Why do *you medicine students* worry so much about financial aid? When you finish you can just charge your patients as much as you want in order to pay back your loans." I responded "That's supposed to be a secret". But I think she was serious so I left before the debate about how much money doctors make started.
