Hi Everyone,
Is anyone currently in Baltimore? I am in town this week and I was wondering if anyone would like to meet in person to explore the possibility of sharing an apartment. I am 24/m/non-smoker

My email is [email protected]...I'm hardly ever on this website.

Look forward to meeting all of you once school starts!

Also, sorry, this is kind of a stupid question. But what building are our lectures in? I know I went inside it, I just wasn't paying much attention as to where I was, and I don't know the name of the building so I can't find it on this campus map.

i'm actually interested in knowing the answer to this as well...i wasn't paying attention either!

Our first year classes are going to be in the Taylor Lecture Hall (formerly known as the Freshmen Lecture Hall) on the first floor of the Bressler Research Building.

Argg.... I really need to focus and get some work done. I don't think I've done anything useful for days. Including job work or studying for my final exam I have tonight. I spent 30 minutes this morning making moving announcements that I won't send out for 6 weeks.

Man, I sent my withdrawal to Drexel through email 2 days ago, and they haven't responded. Give me my money, suckas!

It took me about a month to get my refund from Albany, and I sent my withdrawal letter about 3 days afters getting my acceptance to Maryland. The want it fast, but they sure are slow to give it back!

😍 Maryland for no deposit required!

I still need to withdraw from my other schools. I keep putting it off, but I'm not sure why. Is it ok to send a withdrawl through email, or do they prefer snail mail? Do you need to apologize for not picking their school? Lol...I think I'm overanalyzing the situation.

Seriously...I heart Maryland. Plus that schedule looks pretty sweet...a week here or there of full day classes, but most weeks only Tuesdays and Wednesdays are full days. I am going to love being able to head home at noon. Yes, I know I'll be studying my butt off, but it is refreshing to know that you have more flexibility.

You'll need to send one through snail mail. I put mine in the mail and called them the same day to let them know it was coming. Do any of your schools refund deposits? If so you might want to get your withdrawal in ASAP, as most of them that do only do so until May 15th.

And don't apologize, just be nice. Here's what I wrote:

Pursuant to my telephone call on March 27, 2006, I am writing to formally withdraw my application to XXX Medical School. I am pleased to have been offered a place at your fine academic institution, but have decided to attend another medical school.

Additionally, as this withdrawal has occurred prior to May 15th, I am requesting the refund of my $100 deposit. You may forward it to the address indicated below.

Short and sweet.

You don't have to snail mail it. E-mail is fine in most cases. But mine basically said I'm withdrawing, and send my money to the AMCAS address, thanks for the opportunity. I'd just like to hear that they got it, actually.

Ok, so I need to confess that I'm a little uncomfortable at the idea of anatomy lab. I actually managed to get through highschool biology without actually doing any dissecting, and I only did a fetal pig in college. I was watching the slide show on the main page of medscope and my stomach was doing some little flip flops at the one where the girl is up very close to the missing face of her cadaver.

http://medscope.umaryland.edu/main/start.html?

Am I the only one? I've met so many premeds that seem to have no apprehensions about this part of med school, and I want to know if they are mostly fakers or whether I'm just weird.

Nah, plenty of people have this concern. From what I understand, you'll probably have some budding future surgeons who just can't wait to dissect in your group. You can probably just observe.

In an attempt at the triple post, I found out some info:

Intro to Clinical Med for the first year has no actual physical exam skills, it is all readings, discussions, interviews and histories. Kind of surprising.

Hey Suzie,

Some schools require you to send a letter through snail mail. So you just just call to make sure. You don't want to do it the wrong way and not get your money back.

Oh and Ladybug (I forgot your SDN name but remembered the pic) 🙂 ,

Goodluck on your final

LS, I feel the same way. I wasn't really grossed out dissecting animals, but the thought of doing it with human bodies...well, yeah. I'm a bit apprehensive. But I think once we get in there and get used to it, those nerves will wear down a bit. Plus, there's nothing like the smell of formaldehyde in the morning 🙂

I don't think I'll be the one fainting in lab, but I definitely won't be the gung-ho "cutter". I think a happy medium (respectful of the dead) is optimal for this kinda endeavor.

Sounds good to me. I'm glad we're going to a school with at least a few of us are willing to admit we aren't superhuman and have normal anxieties about the whole thing. 😀

I'm a little worried, but not too much. When I took highschool anatomy we went to the Cleveland Chiropractic center in Kansas City, and observed their students dissecting cadavers. It was definitely overwhelming, particularly the smell, and I remember getting a little lightheaded but never close to passing out. You just have to try and stay calm, remember to breathe (but don't breathe so deeply that you hyperventilate!). The part that got to me was watching the students use a saw to cut into the skull and remove the brain...and then looking into the skull and seeing the insides of the eyelids. That'll wake you up in the morning. It was very weird, but I think you get a new appreciation for the intricacies of the human body...and it'll make you stop and think about your own mortality.

OK, I might pass out at this part. The thought of bone saws cutting through a human skull scares me about as much as clowns hiding in my closet do.

😱

I think for most, this will be the biggest hurdle. Once we get past the smell I think we will be ok. Like others have said you can probably reach a happy medium with the other students in the group as far as cutting and what not goes. Or just join my group, I definitely want to get my hands dirty. Also I heard that we share cadavers with the dental students? Or the groups are a mix? How does this work?

edit: also as far as the smell, i've heard people won't eat certain foods day after lab due to smells/formaldehyde gets on everything etc... (i.e. eggs) I've also heard of people that have a completely separate pair of shoes and clothes just for anatomy lab that they trash afterwards since the smell permeates everything. Yummy.

:::Raises hand:::

This'll so totally be me. I couldn't stand bringing that smell home with me. UGH.

Yeah, one good thing about Wake was their anatomy lab. No freaking smell! None! Something about the vents. Also, they were linked to the Radiology dept with flatscreens for images of the area you're working on. Pretty incredible.

I really liked the UMD anatomy lab. It seemed much more well-ventilated compared to the other schools I visited.

Congrats, LS. I heard that you guys put in an offer on S. Calhoun. That rocks. 👍

Yep, we should know by Wednesday if they accept it or not. :-D

What else have you guys received from UMD? I just had the initial acceptance packet and recognition of my acknowledgement to go there in the fall. Is there anything else? I only ask since it looks like you need a login/password to access medscopes and I don't have one.

Well, they mailed me my M.D. degree about a month ago. It had some note attached about how I was exempt because I'm "special."

I'm still waiting on that pony, however.

I haven't gotten anything, aside from the disability form that I have yet to turn in. I can access medscope, but only because I have a PW from a friend that goes there. Last year they emailed the accepted people a PW for medscope early.

damn. you gotta teach me that.

Guys, I almost went freakin nuts looking at apartments today. I really liked Redwood Towers but I really can't afford to live there (I'll be living by myself). Centerpoint said to call them back when it gets closer to my preferred move-in date (August 1). Marlboro/Redwood Square was ok. Paying for parking is going to suck no matter what building ($110-$135/mo.). And I have a cat...I actually have to pay like $30-35/mo plus at some places a couple hundred dollar deposit (which, at one place, was not refundable!).

🙁 I'm not going to med school anymore. I mean, tuition is bad enough, I just didn't think it'd add up to be this expensive living in Baltimore...

Sorry for the long post of whining. 🙁

Damn, they are all on Mondays. That blows, how are we supposed to go drinkin after exams? Mass skip on Tuesdays?

Dr. Mario: Try my potential option: get an apt near the light rail in Towson/Timonium and take that down. MUCH cheaper.

Mario,
They do have other places that are a little cheaper if you have a car. You should check out the places under the Mount Ridge Apartments. They have a whole list of cheaper apartments like 600 but they are not like centerpoint quality. I am staying at centerpoint and if you sign a 14 month lease you can get 2 months rent free or 1 month and 1 year parking for free. So this could lessen the expenses if you really want to go with centerpoint.

It catches me off guard when people call me "Mario." I'm like...that's not my name and I'm not a guy... Then I remember it's my screenname.

The only reason I am hesitant to sign a 14 mo. lease is that if I'm unhappy with the place, it'll be harder to get out the following year (moving in like September probably wouldn't be a possibility). Then again, the apts are really nice there, so that probably wouldn't happen.

I guess I could move in earlier, but I wouldn't actually live in the apartment during July...so the "free" rent would just be kind of pointless. But free parking would be SWEET!

Yeah, the reverse ventilation there was pretty cool...it was the most pleasant smelling anatomy lab by far (and the cleanest, since everything was brand new). Still, I'd pick Baltimore over Winston-Salem any day.

Don't we have small group sessions Tuesday afternoons? =/ Isn't a lot of our grade in that class based on attendance? Then again...... I guess they can't fail us all. Or is UMD's grading not based on a curve?

Anyway, yeah, boo for Monday exams. And boo for late days at work. It's 2235 and I'm still here 🙁

Geez, it's not like we have a test EVERY Monday, right? There are like 3 weeks in between each set! That leaves plenty of time to go drinking! Plus, if we are done with the exam no later than 5pm, then we can get to the bar at 5:30, which gives us at least a solid 5 hours of hardcore glass-pounding before we even have to think about crawling back to our beds in order to wake up in good shape for 8am lecture the next morning. Or, we could just skip lecture due to the massive hangover and just go to the afternoon session in our pajamas. Maybe one of the clinical skills that we can learn early is how to give each other a normal saline IV. That should significantly decrease recovery time.

OK, I'm seriously not this sad.

Your use of the 24-hour clock hurts my brain.

And I'm sorry your still at work. If it makes you feel any better, I have now completed more than 30 hours of work on 1 of 2 final projects for a 2 credit-hour class and probably have at least 10 more to put in (I think since the prof is close to retiring he is being especially sadistic)

you know what's funny?? that is exactly how a doc at work described med school to me. studystudystudy...exam. go out that night, drink, then wake up the next morning and studystudystudy until next exam. rinse and repeat.

Monday exams are kinda nice, early in the week, you get it over with yada yada yada. Also, from what I hear, medical school isn't like real life...namely, there is no weekend/weekday. Everything just goes according to the schedule of your school and everyone follows along. Friends of mine that are in medical school don't complain to me about missing the bar saturday night or whatever because they only go drinking with other medical students and everyone is on the same schedule, hell I know of a few kids (this was at umich) who had quizzes due sunday afternoon on a regular basis for one class...they would go drinking ON SUNDAY NIGHT and continue it on monday. Their fri/sat became sun/mon. Sure you may have class the next day, but how many of you plan on going? After the first week I definitely won't be in lecture at 8am being that I can listen, watch, print, read, our lectures in like 7 different formats no less. The plethora of study options makes class more or less optional unless you learn really well from someone reading to you at 8am...talk about ineffcient. But then again that is just me, I love sleep and work much better on a 3AM - 11AM sleep schedule. I suppose most are just sitting there shaking their heads at me, so when all else fails, I guess I'll just follow LW's advice. Hooking up an IV for hangovers will be SWEET.

Might be really difficult trying to find one's vein in a state of hangover. for the IV thing.

Ummm we can look at Monday's test in another way. Could use Friday night for drinking then study Sat and Sun. Hit it on Monday and then ur good to go. Atleast, we don't have Sat. and Sun classes so those days could be turned to ur advantage. For some reason, I like attending classes till I absolutely can't. But again, that was in college so I don't know how medschool is going to affect that.

IVs on Tuesday following exams huh? Sooounds like a plan. I volunteer to do the sticking!

Yay, the week is half over.

Dude, I totally hear you. 3-11 is my kind of sleep cycle. I plan on utilizing the downloaded lectures a fair amount.

Gentle: We're talking post-exam binging. Drinking pre-exam is fun too, though!
