University of Maryland Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks, guys! Now I'll have a little warning when it arrives in my mailbox (here's hoping for big and thick! haha)

If I can impose on your generous natures once more -- since my file's being reviewed right now, is there ANYTHING I can do at this stage? I sent Dr. Foxwell a pre-interview letter of intent (which included updates from fall classes), then a thank-you letter/re-statement of intent directly following my interview early this month, and then my advisor contacted Dr. Foxwell himself. Should I send another letter or e-mail? Or would that be obnoxious?

Thanks for all the advice and kind wishes 🙂

here's hoping for big and thick!

THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!

(The unofficial c/o 2010 class quote.)

Anyway, Sartre, I think you've gone above and beyond in terms of demonstrated interest. Anything extra at this point may be misconstrued as neuroticism (and, quite possibly, with valid reason). Believe me, I remember how nerve-wracking this process was. Be patient, hang in there, and have a little faith that your application file is being considered in its entirety, and that you've taken every possible measure to assure your continued interest in UMD.

If long periods of time (i.e. several weeks) go by without word from Admissions, then it may be advisable to check in and give an update. But I would leave it up to the admissions gods at this point.

Good luck. :luck:

bump

thats just cause i can, not a fan of digging for this thread lol

WTF EVER. I LOVE bloody diarrhea. And hematemesis. And all hematochezia in general.

I could totally picture myself as a GE. Think of the power I would wield, with my mighty 'scope. I'd make people tremble with by mere mention of my name and specialty. "Hi, I'm Dr. LadyWolverine, and I'm here to do your colonoscopy."

Awesomeness. 👍

Just remember to clean the colonoscope before you do an endoscopy on the next pt and you'll avoid plenty of malpractice

I'm still sticking with Rehab--needles in peoples spines, joints and muscles are much more fun.

FM and EM are now the only true contenders, granted I dont start loving the OR come July! Thats a fat chance tho seeing as eating and using the bathroom without scrubbing out, then back in is a nice luxury.

I'm sorry to invade this thread once again. Just hoping for some advice -- I just read my letter from Maryland, and they have placed me on hold for later review. I'm absolutely heartbroken. I was really feeling encouraged by what Dean Foxwell told my advisor, and now my prospects are looking very dim. Adding to my disappointment (Maryland is by far my first choice, dream school) is the fact that I haven't received any acceptances from any schools - only waitlists.

Has anyone else ever been placed on hold? What can I do at this point? I'll certainly send another letter of intent (it will be my third), but I'm wondering if there is anything else I can do.

This feels way worse than bloody diarrhea 🙁

Thanks for all the advice and support (and for tolerating me on your thread). You guys are awesome.

You should never apologize for invading a thread meant for you! Actually, we are taking over your thread  You're the one who needs the thanks for tolerating us!

I'm assuming from prior posts that you are on post-interview hold? By no means is that a death sentence! Keep the faith...it just means that you are being put to the side to compare to other applicants that are coming on through. To be honest, you still have a couple months left in the cycle, so all is definitely not lost.

I would wait on the letter of intent until much later if you still havent heard anything back until like late April. I only say that because you dont want to contact too often, and by sending back your interest in being on the waitlist lets them know you are interested by itself. Unfortunately, I dont think there is really anything else you can do to at this moment. You sound cool, so if there was I'd try to help you out a bit and let you know. But alas, I have no special powers anymore, I already slept with everyone I possibly could to get in here, so there's no one left I can do for you...sorry 'bout that...

You def shouldnt think being placed on hold means youre done. When I applied, I was placed on 3 waitlists: VCU, and both UMDNJ schools. I was rejected from New Jersey much later, I withdrew from VCU after I was accepted to Maryland, and Robert Wood Johnson did accept me...IN MID JUNE!!!! So yeah, you never know, I know it sucks, but waitlists are better than no lists, just keep on chuggin, you wouldnt be in the running still if you didn't deserve it!

My colleagues will do a fantastic job of correcting my broke *** if I told you anything in error, or gave bad advice.

Oh, and how about you get a UMD acceptance AND not have to deal with bloody diarrhea? Kool-aid in the poopie could be quite a few things, and all pretty rough stuff from what we've been learning. I wouldnt wish that on my worst enemy.

Okay, maybe I'd wish 24 hrs of bloody diarrhea on only my worst enemy...just to freak 'em out a bit :meanie:

Thanks so much for the encouragement. Yeah, I definitely don't want to overload the admissions office with letters (and I would imagine that sending too many might detract from my sincerity). I have never felt such lack of control in my entire life -- but I guess it's good preparation for 3rd year! And I definitely didn't mean to minimize bloody diarrhea -- after reading my letter last night, I was feeling a little despondent...

Thanks so much for offering your sexual influence, by the way -- I appreciate the sentiment 😉 And if you know of any important men who appreciate certain favors...haha, just kidding. Kind of.

Best of luck with getting in!

I will be there next fall for sure, and am getting really excited about it 🙂 Anyone else know for sure that they will be joining me in the Class of 2012? I am thinking of doing the whole facebook group thing. Is there anything created yet?

No problem! I know youre all really worried and stressed about it, and rightfully so. We certainly hope the best for you :luck:

Oh, and no harm no foul, I know you weren't trying to minimize anything. I'm always messing around and making jokes (the others can attest to that), so you can really never take me seriously.

Btw, I already slept with the men too. I'm one irresistible dude. Seriously.

ALREADY talk of a 2012 facebook group? OMG we're really moving forward huh? I still vividly remember feeling awkward every waking moment at orientation...

Facebook because I need something to do while at work 🙂 I love my job, but I need something to break up this monotonous day. Facebook is PERFECT for that...haha.

i'm 99% sure i'm going, so do your facebook thing and ill be happy to join 🙂

bring it on, facebook! let me know the group name and i'll for sure hit it up. i'm 100% decided on UMD!!!

does anyone know if maryland released the professional school scholarship application? I can't find it anywhere on their website, nor did I recieve it via mail.

yea i definitely already filled that out and sent it. i'm pretty sure i found it somewhere on the financial aid website. if they took it off the website you can probably still call and ask them about it, though now i think about it the deadline may have been march 1st soo that could be a reason its not up anymore

Soccerpunk is correct, the deadline was March 1st so they took it down. For future reference, it was probably posted with all the other scholarship forms (which you might find helpful now): http://www.umaryland.edu/fin/state.html

thats wierd. I had been browsing that website for months, and was unable to find it. This message has been at the bottom of the webpage since I interviewed in october:

Professional School Scholarship
Applications for the Professional School Scholarship are distributed through the UMB Student Financial Aid Office and are due March 1 of the preceding academic year. Students are notified by their respective schools when applications are available.

I don't know. They notified students via e-mail that it was up on that page so it must have been there at some point because I know I did mine and turned it in and wouldn't have gotten it from any other place. They notified us on Feb 5th so it wasn't up for that long. Sorry I can't be more help!

Busy schedule for you second years right now?

Oh goodness yes. Everyone had tons of ICM stuff this week and an exam tomorrow on GI and heme (1st years have a killer physio exam tomorrow too). But at 11:45 tomorrow, its Spring Break time 😍

Lord knows i need that SO bad right now.

And shockingly enough, despite the fact that the eventual Mrs. MSK had tons to do also this week before the break, we haven't fought really at all this week, despite all the stress. Pretty good prognosis for next week id say 🙂

Mr. LucidSplash and I haven't fought either! However, I haven't seen him all week either, being at the damn pods until late every night and him out "networking for Real Estate" (read: playing poker all night). 🙄 Its hard to fight when you aren't even awake at the same time. 🙄

Outside of going to the housing office and financial aid office, can someone give a quick rundown of the housing options, ie. price, distance from medical center and happiness with the place, and the ability to pay for which on the grants/loans etc. that one is able to obtain?

I have done a good deal of reading on:

(1) Fayette
(2) Camden Courts
(3) Pascault
(4) Redwood Towers
(5) The Atrium

but would like to hear first hand opinions, if possible.

WOOOOOOOOOO SPRING BREAK!!

SDN wouldn't let me type "Leaders" in my little description thingy under my name, so I had to put "Leeaders" instead. Other users probably think I accidentally misspelled it.

Woohoo for not fighting with spouses/SOs/roomates/friends/cats/dogs/your mom/whatever. This week SUCKED so bad, I couldn't wait for it to end. But, now it's over!! 2 MORE TESTS AND WE ARE DONE!!!

And, if I had to live on/near campus, I would totally dish out the extra bucks and live at the Redwood. Camden Court is also extremely nice (and close).

I visited a couple of weeks ago, and actually got the chance to go into Redwood Towers. It seems like a pretty great place, and is very affordable if you decide to live with a roommate.

Anyone know anything about the computers that we receive? I cannot wait to get a new computer...my current computer is 6 years old, and has seen better days!!!

The MSII student that i interviewed with showed me his, its an IBM thinkpad. I personally find this the one big flaw of Maryland, the fact that you HAVE to shell out 2G's for a laptop and have no choice in what computer whatsoever. I guess its okay for people who are in need of a new computer regardless but i find it a lil annoying....if i was gonna spend that much money i'd like to at least have some selection. oh well 🙁

The computers are standardized because all tests are on them, and tech support would be a nightmare otherwise. It definitely makes things easier when something breaks and they can pop out your hard drive on a loaner and fix the rest of your laptop.

Which thinkpad is it? A friend of mine who went to UM Med had one and it was pretty terrible. I'm hoping they are better now.

EDIT: Just looked at the Lenovo website. I hope its the X tablet. That would be nice.

We have the T60, and the 1st years got the newer version of it. I'm sure you guys will get the updated one was well, as it seems every class gets the newest model available.

However, I doubt it will be the X series. Id imagine they are shying away from that due to its smaller size, maybe because there is less in it? I know nothing about the X so ill have to apologize.

Completely agree with PM on standardized laptops. It may seem like it sucks to not have a choice, but when something goes wrong (and it will...laptops have always universally sucked for me) youll love the fact that they can fix it quickly for you, rather than you having to do it yourself!

Re: the apartments, if you like cheap, dorm style living, Pascault row is the way to go. Not trying to bash it, they do feel like dorms, but they probably are a far cheaper option so that makes it better with the fact they are REALLY close-in fact the closest-to school, though not many people I know live there.

I actually put my vote in for the Atrium, if you dont mind living right next to Lexington Market. My gfis moving into the city and i suggested it to her, and she was NOT havin it. Would have looked at it if it wasnt by Lex Market, cant say Im mad at her though, considering i wont always be around to escort her back at night (ewwwwwww in-house call). I hear its that nice though that the deal is amazing. Id have probably lived there.

I was hoping to get a mac, but the thinkpad is decent. My boyfriend has one, and it is much better than the Dell that I currently own. Is technical support good? I am not too technologically saavy, and always seem to have my computer crash!

Yeah, they don't go for tablets - though it would be nice. Tech support is very good, you take it right to them and they handle any issues, either fixing it that day or giving you a loaner for any longer.

Yeah to be clear, we have a dedicated laptop IT unit. They're on the 2nd floor of MSTF and you just take it to them and say "here fix this please now kthxbye." Or something similar, even if it takes a whole new laptop/motherboard/whatever. That hasn't really happened to many people but its nice to know that whatever happens, you're going to have either that laptop or the one they give you to replace it. I actually wanted extra RAM in mine so I bought some online thinking it would be easy to install like on my husband's Dell. I never actually looked at my laptop before the RAM arrived and then realized that it was a bit more difficult to access than on the Dell. So I took it to the IT guys around 1pm, went to ICM, and then came back at 4pm after ICM was over and picked it up with the memory installed. Ours came with 1 GB of RAM which isn't bad, but I occassionally use my comp for other stuff besides school stuff and an additional 2 GB was like $65.

Anywho, yes its not ideal to get your option but you are going to be LIVING on these things (if you're like most of us) and having everything set up ahead of time and having the comprehensive tech support it awesome.

Bumpity bump bump bump!!!

I haven't been on here in while... I saw some sparks of life back there, what happened??? lol... I, BTW, have a very serious question... what do you guys do for fun in Bmore?

I don't have time to address this right now, but don't let anyone tell you that there isn't a lot to do.

In addition to what there is to do here, you are in close proximity to D.C. Hop on 295 which directly connects the two and you can be into the city within 35 minutes.

The city definitely lives up to the name 'Charm City'. Hopefully you'll see when you get more responses.

We're all on Spring Break right now which is why we're so quiet. I'm in the middle of nowhere South Carolina and my internet connection is terrible, so I can't do a lengthy response. LW is with her sister, hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains somewhere I think. Coz might be playing lots of video games, and I have no idea where MSK is. We'll liven up a bit again once Spring Break winds down.

I've also been trying to do some review for STEP 1. But this morning I went horseback sitting (not riding, since they were trail horses and really did all the work) and now we're gearing up to watch a ton of basketball. I'm one of only 2 people in my pool that picked Kansas (ok, so Mr. LS picked Kansas) to win it all.

what do you guys do for fun in Bmore?

I will probably do some searching later but for now I'm going to rattle some things off the top of my head:

Sports:
(1) Camden Yards is only a few blocks away. This wonderfully-designed retro-style ballpark was the inspiration for many 'old school' stadiums that followed. I don't even like Baseball and I appreciate this place. The few times I go to baseball games, I basically go just to hang out with friends since you can get tickets for as low as $5. It should be noted that Camden Yards is one of the few stadiums that exist where you can bring in your own drinks.
(2) M&T Bank Stadium, the home of the Baltimore Ravens, is also within walking distance, though just a tad bit farther and very close to entrances to I-95 and 295.

Places:
(1) Harborplace, "a modern urban retail and restaurant complex" located on the Inner Harbor. Lots of food and shopping. You can also find people performing music and so forth along the waterfront.
(2) ESPN Zone. Sports to watch and play, games, drinking, beer, etc.
(3) The National Aquarium in Baltimore. Arguably the nicest aquarium in the United States, and possibly the world, especially since the Dec. 2005 expansion "Coastal Living named it the #1 aquarium in the U.S. in 2006"
(4) The National Science Center. Learning science, IMAX, etc.
(5) The Baltimore Zoo. Actually a really nice zoo, not free, but not expensive either.
(5) Power Plant. I hate this place but some people like it.

The Arts:
(1) Baltimore Museum of Art. Nice, decent sized collection. It's no National Gallery of Art (which is FREE), but the Nat'l Gallery is right there in D.C. Just hop in a car.
(2) Walters Art Museum
(3) American Visionary Art Museum. Dedicated to showcasing art from those who found an artistic spark without any formal training (part of the requirements to be shown there). Really awesome stuff unlike anything you've seen. I worked there for a short time between college and grad school and I the people who visit love it. In the time I was there I saw Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, Alan Rickman, Tracy Ullman, that guy who plays Lex Luthor on Smallville (too lazy to look up), Edward Norton, Salma Hayek (Norton's fam has strong connections to the area, his uncle basically founded Columbia).
(4+) A few theaters, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, etc.

Bars:
(1) The Brewers Art...is f-ing awesome.
(2) Ixia. High class martini bar
(3) Pickles. Dive bar by Camden Yards. Beer battered pickels, though they sound disgusting, are great.
(3+) Numerous other bars, some great some not.

Plus areas like Fells Point, Canton, Druid Hill, etc. etc. with attractions as well.

Thats off the top of my head. If you wikipedia "Baltimore" you will probably get so many more.

reviving this thread...

do you second years know your clerkship schedules yet? do you guys getta choose at all or is it randomly given to the students? also, have you heard anything about certain rotation/departments for bein hard/bad?? i read a different thread and saw people on average complain most about their OB/Gyn rotation because of the personalities, is it the same at UMMS?

Yes, we have our schedules. At the end of January we had a meeting where all the clerkship directors came and gave their little spiel about why their clerkship was the best (all good naturedly of course). Then they gave us a few weeks to set up "wish list" schedules - you could do up to 5 - and then it all went into a computer and they gave everyone their schedules based on fitting as many people with their choices as possible. Then they gave us their schedules and they set up a forum for people to try and trade pieces of schedules if they wanted.

My personal take on hard/bad rotations is that every rotation will have parts that suck and the sooner people just accept that and move on and make the best of it, the better 3rd year will be (of course that's not having been through 3rd year, but most of the 3rd years I've talked to have agreed). I think surgery will be difficult to some degree and OB/Gyn maybe and even Medicine just because it is long and very important to do well in. But its all relative I think.

I'll be attending Maryland this fall, and like many of the incoming class I'm trying to figure out the housing options. I suppose my decision comes down to the apartments near campus (Redwood Towers, Marlboro Classic & Redwood Square, The Atrium) or living 2 - 3 miles away from campus in Federal Hill or (less likely) Mt Vernon. Do any of the current students looking at this thread have any advice regarding this decision?

I think that at this point I'm leaning towards Federal Hill, but I do have concerns about parking at the medical school, since I imagine I will be driving to school most of the time. Are you always able to find a parking spot in the garage? If not, are there alternative places to park nearby? I don't want to have to stress about finding parking every morning. Similarly, is it reasonably safe to walk from the hospital/school to the parking garage later in the evening?

One last thought - since it seems from the discussions on these forums that a good chunk of the student body lives in the apartments close to the campus, have you students who live further away from campus feel that doing so negatively affects your social relationships with the other students? Thanks for any and all comments!

I personally haven't lived in any of these places but I do know classmates that do - except maybe the Atrium. I probably know people that live there but just don't know that they live there. I myself live about a mile west of the school in my own house, so I have nothing to offer regarding apartment living.

Parking is $4 a day. You should not worry about finding a space in the student garage. Even if the garage fills up, which it can do from time to time, they will just give you a voucher and send you over to one of the other 2 campus garages nearby. You'll always be able to park.

You can walk to the garage if you want, but if you feel unsafe, there is a caravan service that runs after dark (starting around 6pm usually) until midnight. Call them and they will pick you up anywhere and drop you off anywhere withing a large designated area around campus. I've actually taken the caravan all the way to my house before. There is also an escort patrol that has specific stops at specific time intervals. Information, including caravan service area, is here:http://www.umaryland.edu/student/transportation.html

No. You are going to see your classmates everyday in lecture/small group/the pods. If you hang out outside of school, frequently you're going to be meeting up in Fed Hill/Canton/Fells Point anyway. You do see less of the people that live way outside Baltimore but anywhere within the surrounding area, including Fed Hill/Fells/Mt. Vernon/etc. is still pretty close to school and facilitates socialization.

On parking - if you commute, you can sign up to park at the lots at Lexington Market on the roof for $50 a month, which is a considerable savings if you're driving each day.

Word? I hope they didn't change the price on the roof garage, I've been paying $33/month...ballin'!

I'm away for a few days, and this thread blows up. I don't have anything constructive to say, just:

Go Lady Terps!!
Go Memphis!!
Go Wazzu!!

That is all.
