University of Maryland Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
^ thank you 🙂

I acutally called them this morning to get all the info. I am so excited and so broke.

Are you going to U of M? Do most students have a car on campus?

Yes, I'll be attending U of M, Baltimore campus. I don't know where I'm going to live though... I should probably get started on looking.

I won't be bringing my car. Well, at least not for my first year. Maybe later on.

hmm I cant decide if I should bring a car on campus or not. I dont know if I'll need it. Never really got a tour of the compus or got to know anything about the area. I do know that Baltimore is not the best place to be at.
I applied for an apartment in Pascault Row, hopefully I'll get one as well.

for the welcome day, i would say if you are within a few hours i would try to come, but other than that it wasnt anything you couldnt get from asking specific questions or from orientation. many things they covered and then were like "but we will explain that more at orientation" i wouldnt spend the money to fly in and get a hotel room

as for the car situation, i have heard parking is very expensive in baltimore (im at SG-you NEED a car to get anywhere) maybe about 150 a semester. many students do not have cars, but it will be helpful when you have rotations and you need to get to your site. i know students complained this year that they didnt have a car and it wasnt fair for rotations, but i dont know if they try match students who dont have cars with other students or rotations in walking distance

Where are most the pharm students stay are? Any recommendation of apartments? Thanks

Thanks magenta1! that saves me $400 for flight and hotel 🙂

I have a question for the accepted students. When they say they'll check over your transcripts to see if you'll have all the pre-requisites completed, how stringent exactly will they be? My concern is that they require all of the pre-requisite coursework to have a grade of a C or above, and for one of those classes, I have a C-, and I'm not taking that class over this semester. However, the issue there is that I reported in January on my PharmCAS academic upgrade that this class is one of the classes I was taking this semester, but I haven't let them know that I dropped the class, and I haven't updated my PharmCAS about this either. (Would I have to pay more money to update my PharmCAS about not taking this class?) So once they find out, will they require me to retake it over the summer at a community college or something if they deem that grade unacceptable? Or will they simply overlook that one minor problem and take into account that I do go to a more prestigeous and rigorous university? Hopefully it's the latter, given the fact that they've already accepted me.

Besides that, I'll be fulfilling their 6 credits of human anatomy and physiology requirement this semester, but I'm only sure about one of my classes satisfying this requirement. The other class I'm not sure if they'll count as a physiology class or not. Should I contact someone to ask about this or should I just wait to see if they bring up the issue?

Thanks Magenta1.. Can you please give me a feel what to expect in terms of the number of exams per week, lab hours and/or Group work we need to be on campus for the Shady Groove students? Also what it is like being a first year student in general and how many hours of study time and watching the online lectures. By the way what is the parking situation at SG? Do we need to pay? Recommendations please! Thanks a million and other information will be appreciated.

I was concerned about a similiar matter. I haven taken Human Anatomy but never took physiology...so I called them up and they said I have to take it, although I have BS in bio/chem from a prestigeous school 🙂
that gives me something to do while over the summer, which i really dont mind because its just too boring to sit around and wait.
I would suggest that you call them, its better to find out now...then to wait and find out that they wont let you start pharmacy school. It seemed to me that their prereqs were set stone kinda thing.

Who should I call/email though? I don't think Patrice Sharp deals with sort of thing does she? 😕

She's the only one who's email and phone number I have though.

Call Juliana Brammer she should be able to help you.

ive heard that fayette square is nicer, but pascault is closer to the pharm school, so its a toss up. where do you guys plan on living next year?

I applied to both pascault and fayette square. I'm leaning more towards fayette, at least for the 1st year. From what I've read on the SDN forums, both seem fine, but fayette should be a little nicer (but more pricey!)

For number of exams per week, sometimes there are none, one or two. Two can be very common, so don’t get behind! As for lab – we only had two labs first semester which were a few hours each, and 2nd semester we had 1 lab which was like 4 hours. Group work varies – but I would say im generally on campus 3-4 days a week. I live close so its not a big deal, but we have a few people who come from Baltimore, Columbia etc so it is more annoying for them.

For lectures, there are about 4 lectures per day, sometimes less (especially fridays) so its about 15 - 20 lectures a week. You can watch them in fast speed which is 25 minutes per lecture, but I usually watch in fast speed and stop constantly to take notes – so the lectures wind up taking 30 –45 mins, depends on your personal habits.

Parking situation is usually not bad. there are about 3 huge lots and they are in the middle of building a parking garage, which should be done by next august. Basically parking is not an issue, but the main lot obviously fills up fastest, so you might have to walk from the further lots. It is nice when we come for tests at 730am (oh yeah, all tests are at 730am!!) and the lots are completely empty. There are no parking permits or anything so you don’t have to pay. They have public events on campus (I think theres a big auditorium?) which is why parking can be so randomly full.

Living in Baltimore- I would check the beginning of this thread bc I remember seeing that topic frequently

Don;t be so sure of yourself. I specifically remember seeing somewhere on the website that they have absolutely NO preference if you have a degree or not. Hence, they will not give a crap if you come from a prestigious university with a degree. If you don;t have the required courses then they will drop your ass from the acceptance list if not completed before the beginning of the year.

Thanks again Magenta1!! This is very helpful. Do mind if I private mail you? I heard that year 2 is drastically harder than year one is that true? If so what makes it harder? Is it more course work and lectures to view and learn or more exams? thanks again.

I am expecting acceptance or rejection letters or emails today or next week.

Hey when did you guys get the actual acceptance letters through snail mail and how long after your acceptance did you guys receive the package from the school?

Anyone receive acceptance or rejection emails today yet? I heard everything was suppose to be sent out by today...

Who did you hear that from? I asked the admissions people what was going on yesterday and they said that they were still grading applications :/.

Accepted on Monday!! WWOOOOHOOO😀

Does anyone have any suggestions about which campus to pick?? I have never been to the SG campus, but I dont like the idea of distance learning and the 3 hr delay on lectures. For an out of state student do you think I should pick the Baltimore campus??

But still waiting for Denver :xf:

I got interviewed on Jan.30th. Well, is that most likely to get rejection if I don't hear anything from them till today? It is already mid-march and people seem to get their acceptances so far. I'm getting so so so so nervous. 😕

Yes, anyone feel free to message me. I have also heard year 2 is harder, and then year 3 is even harder. Its all subjective though. I have also heard that the older students try to scare the first years! Im a first year so I really don’t know yet! Ive heard 2nd year is more difficult because there are more exams and more busy work. I do know they are working out an entirely new curriculum starting class of 2013, so it might change completely!

As for campus selections, it really depends on how you learn and how you want to live. If you want to live in a city, attend class daily, need teacher interaction, etc choose Baltimore. Many Baltimore students do not attend class and use the online lectures only, so its really just location. If you prefer more suburban, don’t think you need teach interaction, have a close knit community, then SG might be for you. If you have any specific questions about each campus, let me know!

I think if you're from out of state, the Baltimore campus will be more appropriate. A lot of my friends attend Shady Grove only because it's RIGHT by their house & they can save up on $. If that's not really that big of an issue, I'd say you live in Baltimore while you're going to be away from home anyway. Even though I live literally 10-15min away from SG campus, I chose Baltimore campus because like you, I don't like the idea of distance learning. But that's just me because I really don't learn anything if I'm not physically THERE in class and absorbing stuff. And CONGRATS! 😀

Also if money is a big issue, i would look at the cost of living in each location (apartments gas etc)

Thanks magenta1 and ccpharmD 🙂

I was apart of the interviews that got cancelled because of the snow, so I had phone interviews, which were super easy. The professor was practically selling me on the shady grove campus, which seems nice and all.

I'm wondering if more people from the March 2 interviews (cancelled) got in yet??

Wewt! Congrats to everyone who got accepted! So excited to see everyone ^^

Just out of curiosity, is anyone planning to do a joint PharmD-Ph.D or PharmD-MBA or PharmD-JD program??

I'm strongly considering the joint PharmD/PhD, but there don't seem to be many advantages in doing this, other than perhaps saving a year.

You could always just do a PharmD(4 yrs) and do a PhD later (also 4 yrs)

Is anyone here considering other schools or is everyone pretty set on UMB?

dude! did you even read what i wrote. I said I called the University and they told me to take physiology and thats what i will be doing over the summer.

I was there. I remember you, you were the only person from Texas I believe. I got in also 😎

I am considering it very much. I contacted Ms. Brammer for more info.

Hey guys,

Who do you email to ask what preq. to take or to get a confirmation that you don't need any???

here is the link for prereqs
www2.pharmacy.umaryland.edu/admissions/pharmd/prerequisites.html

and you can call Juliana Brammer or Patrice Sharp to confirm or verify. I spoke with Patrice about my prereqs.

Does anyone know if they are still sending out acceptances? Waiting makes me a sad panda...

About pre-reqs, they will email you to let you know if you are missing anything.

Unless it's changed, I remember that they send out waitlist/rejection letters around mid to end april so until then... there's still a chance to get an acceptance.

I had three interview offers: Howard, UMB, and University of Oklahoma.

As for tuition, I'm actually out of state. My girlfriend Utterdevotion is in-state. She sometimes uses my computer so that's why you have that post way above there that says I'm instate. I like UMB because of its opportunities to get into many different types of pharmacy practice. They have experential programs that go far and beyond the required hours for licensing, so you get lots of time to really determine what you want to do. They ensure that you are always on top of your schoolwork, and they have lots of support to make sure you pass your classes. If you want to know more, just read my other posts in this thread.
Hey bingham kid, am aslo interested in UMB, but i really wanna go to USC or UCSF. so since u r from cali wat is ur take on those 2 schools? and also how in the pharmd/mph program over at umb? do u think i should get my bachelor's degree before appying to pharmacy school or just take my requirements and apply.

Just called Patrice and she said that "all admissions decisions will be sent out tomorrow."

Now, I don't know if this means that they will be sent out by e-mail or by postal mail, but it's good to know that we will finally be getting an answer.

Yay! It's good to know when they're finally going to send them. Thanks for the update Hasselbalch :]!

I just hope they send out the pre-req email soon so I can plan my summer.

This week is spring break at MU. I donot expect any mail from them. From their website, I read that they announce accepted or rejected applicants in April. So still two more weeks to wait for.

Someone had posted that letters would be sent out Today (3/17) when they had called the school. Yesterday, I had called the school and Patrice Sharp told me that letters were being sent at the end of the day (3/16)

I believe staff/faculty do not get to partake too much in spring break...:meanie:

I think she's just saying that so we leave her alone. I guess it's fine considering how many people probably call her each day.

Did she mention to you whether it would be through postal mail or e-mail? Precedence says it should come through e-mail, but no one posted having received one yesterday. Hopefully today will be the day...

Just wanted to let you know (since I had been waiting to hear back from Maryland) that I just received an email with my decision a few moments ago -- waitlisted. So, you should be hearing soon too by email.
