University of Maryland Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is the school still closed? Why can't I get access to the admissions office? I can't find a LIVE person to talk. 😡

Yes. The entire University of Maryland Baltimore is closed today (still from the Blizzard)

I would also suggest calling tomorrow (do not wait for Wednesday) because they are predicting another 10 inches Tuesday afternoon- Wednesday afternoon

O M G! Good news for UMB students. haha

I live in NY. I didn't see that much snow this winter. The weather in Baltimore sounds terrible.

Thanks again.

Eh...I'm from Buffalo. Snow doesn't bother me

I was planning on spending some time at home after my interview last week, but had to high-tail in outta there so I wouldn't get snowed in. With the 830 interview time I ended up driving for more hours than I slept 😴

Sad I'm missing out on the snow but I got to be there for the one a couple weeks back 🙂

I had an interview on Feb 4th which was pretty hard, but it was okay.
I heard that I would know the result during on March or early April. However, some people said that they just knew the result within 48hrs.
I emailed to Ms. Sharp to ask about that. I hope to get an acceptance letter soon.

Gook luck to all guys.🙂

i think they say march/early april just so they don't get a ton of emails from people wondering why they haven't heard yet. im sure some people will hear back in a few weeks and others not until march or so. you just have to be patient. plus you should cut them some extra slack since the school has been closed because of all the snow!

i was also supposed to stay an extra night after the interview (just to explore the city) but decided to get out of there before all the snow hit. unfortunately with the interview not ending till 4 i wasnt able to leave till around 5 then hit DC traffic on the way home on I95. that sucked but at least i didnt get snowed in!

I was also tempted to stay an extra night to explore but if you think the traffic was bad, you should have seen the airport. Don't think I've seen a longer line than the one at the security screening checkpoint. And my plane felt like Noah's Ark, every last seat was being fought over by last minute standby's that wanted to escape the snow. I barely made my flight myself.

Just curios: Why did you choose to apply to Howard? What are the benefits of its pharmacy school?

Someone just told me about programs where students of another state may pay in-state tuition. Does anyone know about one for MD residents for outside MD pharmacy schools?

Honestly I only applied to Howard because 1. I'm from the DC area, love DC, and have lots of friends in DC and 2. I wanted to apply to a range of schools since my gpa is on the lower side.

NOT so terrible for us who love an unexpected break now and then...Your all just jealous!😛

I REALLY don't think you need to worry with a PCAT score that high!👍

Does anyone know when next fall's pharm applicants can start applying for pharmcas (it still has this fall's applicants on the website)?

For everyone in Baltimore - how long is the snow supposed to last? If I schedule an interview in two weeks should the snow be somewhat cleared up?

Yup - you should be fine (as long as we dont have ANOTHER snow storm by then). The roads weren't too bad today actually! That means school tomorrow? 🙁

Yes, out of state students CAN apply for in-state residency (and get in-state tuition). But in all honesty the process is not easy; you must be able to prove that you are willing to stay in MD after graduation (that may mean, changing your license, getting your bills to be paid to your Maryland address, etc). Some out of state students have been really lucky (I know of a classmate from NY that got it in the Spring semester of our 1st year) and I know of some students that have applied for 3 years and haven't gotten it.

Maryland has a great program, so I think the out-state tuition is worth it.

But I don't want to lie about how hard/easy the application process is. I had a student from a different school where they told her that it was really easy to get in-state tutition...and after she entered, she found out that it was a lie.

I have a question about the neighborhood the school is in. I'm not gonna do something stupid like wander around aimlessly after dark but I'm thinking about walking from a hotel to the campus and back again. I've been looking at hotels and the Sheraton is 0.6 miles from the pharamcy building. Others are of a similar distance. The interview times are 830-noon and 1230-400. Mostly on weekdays but the morning session is also on a saturday. I'm thinking it shouldn't be that bad. Is walking ok or do you recommend I get a cab anyway?

You will be fine at both times 🙂 The cab shouldn't be necessary.

my hotel (tremont plaza) was the about same distance from the school, i walked by myself and i was fine, never felt unsafe + im a girl 🙂 i agree that a cab isn't necessary, but you are in a city so just be aware of your surroundings!

I feel like this blizzard is going to screw us over in the end. P1s already have a test every week, this will only make it worse. I hope it clears up soon, I can't wait to do more interview (it's fun being in the position of authority).

Thanks!! My sister-in-law (helps me plan trips since I don't fly/book things much) was suggesting to use a cab since I'd be in my suit/dress shoes but I figure as long as there's not too much snow I should be fine. No different than walking around UB (though I have thinsulated, waterproof boots then ).

About the snow - snow doesn't bother me but I just don't want to worry about flights to be canceled. I thought I was going to drive but then I realized that there are direct flights from Buffalo to Baltimore (unlike Cincinnati where there arr annoying layovers. In which case if I'm gonna be traveling all day might as well drive).

As a Buffalonian I have to laugh about all the panic to the snow

The sidewalks should be cleared in 2 weeks (could always PM me for an update on the sidewalk closer to your interview date ahha!) but you could always wear boots to the interview and change after you enter the building (before check in). I'd ask if you could leave your boots in the student affairs office if it bothers you to carry around a bigger bag w/ your boots in them.

Haha I'm from Maryland....and let me say when they predict 1 inch of snow everyone STILL rushes to the grocery store...and people are HORRIBLE drivers w/ the 1 inch.

+1000

I just got power back after 3 days... yess hot showers again!!! Marylanders really need to learn how to cope with blizzards lol. (I guess my years living in Boston has taught me better...). I'm just worried what the extra snow on Tuesday is going to do :scared:

walking should be fine. i walked this past Thursday from Holiday Inn on Howard and Lombard to the pharmacy hall in about 10 minutes. it's a nice walk in my opinion.

Hi everyone,

UMB has announced that Tuesday will be closed. So don't call the office! No one will answer....

I'll update you all on Wednesday's status in terms of the incoming snow storm.

I love it! I have a reason to go indulge myself at the grocery store and load up on uneccesary things (i.e. sweets!!)

I know - even though it completly messes with my schedule, I love having an unexpected vacation (even when it means I have to shovel 🙁)!...and I can catch up on studying...everbody do the snow dance:laugh:!

Oh my - I hate losing power when it's so cold😱!...and now there's nowhere left to shovel the snow!
... I see you also applied to Howard U - could you tell me the benefits of their pharm school? (UMB is DEFINITLY my top choice, but I'm looking at other options realitivy nearby)

Can I ask about your class hours - are you in class from 9 to 5 mon to fri?... and do you work evenings?

Shady Grove is a distance-education campus; in other words, lectures are conducted via recorded webcast. It has its advantages: you get a lot more freedom to do your own thing during the day, since you are only required to report to the Shady Grove campus for exams and report to the Baltimore campus for lab days. The disadvantage of Shady Grove is that its far from Baltimore, where the majority of your classmates are. In addition, it makes it harder to meet your coursemasters face-to-face to ask questions.

Please note that while they are two campuses, they are ONE program. You start your 4 years together as one class, and you finish as one class. As class president, I find myself trying to constantly coordinate so that both campuses are brought together during social events. It's not an easy thing to do, but the school wants both campuses to be perceived as equals in every way. Shady Grove tends to be better for individuals with families and jobs that they aren't planning to give up. Baltimore is better for those who aren't good at independent studying and really rely on going to school to keep up.

I like the Baltimore campus; it's more lively, and I have a lot of opportunities to meet the administration, the professors, the upperclassmen, and my fellow classmates. That is not to say Shady Grove isn't fun. It totally is and I know some really great people from that campus who are equally smart, if not smarter, than the people at Baltimore.
I know this is an old post, but I was reading through the thread and I have a quesiton: Do Shady Grove students not meet any profs directly - it's like an online program? - and do you have a choice of which campus to go to?...and what's all that in previous entries about admissions reading this thread?

Here people still drive when there is a travel ban. hell I did it myself once

Well, I don't see many except that it's nearby my hometown. Honestly, I needed to apply to an 'easier' school in order to widen my options just in case I didn't get into others. It's on the bottom of my list of schools I applied to. I really thought my low GPA would kill my chances but I guess not 🙂

I'm sure a current student could answer more thoroughly. But, the P2 I work with goes to campus I think twice a week. I think for quizzes and labs (where there are professors). They do all the lecture learning on their own via web but have to go to campus for other stuff. A lot of the Baltimore students say they end up skipping and watching the video lectures anyway lol.

As for choices... at the interview she mentioned that if both campuses were still open you get to choose. However if only one campus is open, you're offered acceptance at only that campus which you can either accept or forgo to be put on the waitlist at the other campus (risky!).

Another question: what exactly do you do in labs - in previous posts people mentioned that formal attire must be worn - are labs like clinicals or like prereq chem labs?

What was your PCAT score (you do NOT have to disclose this if you don't feel comfortable) - maybe it made up for the low GPA.
...It seems that nobody REALLY wants to go to Howard or knows anything really positive about it, they only apply there as a last resort!?😕

84 composite. You can click the Pharmapplicants link for my stats.

With the new enhanced cirriculum, we have Abilities Lab every week and a lab quiz every week. The quiz consist of 5 drugs we are reponsible for that week (indication, contraindication, dosing, adverse effects, etc), pharmacy calculation, medical terminology, and pre-lab questions (IV, pharmacy law, drug information database, etc). The lab quiz information are all self taught. The lab itself is 3 hours, usually involving 3 acitivities. In lab we do activities dealing with community pharmacy, IV preparation, vital signs (blood pressure, respiratory rate, heart rate), drug information database, patient counseling, medical device, writing SOAP notes, and etc... The activities changes every week. Professional clothing is required and so is a lab coat. You learn the most about pharmacy practice here but it this course is also the most taxing and time consuming. It can be quite fun though, like taking down a perscriptiong from a telephone order or learning to cradle someone's arm and take their blood pressure.

Classes are usually 9am to 1pm Monday to Friday. I've sat in some Baltimore classes and it can be distracting with all the typing going around. Oftentime I have to go back home and rewatch the lecture (this is the case with most students who attend class anways). At Shady Grove, they are required to have the lectures put up 6pm the same day but it is usually up an hour after the lectures are over. Lectures are watch via Mediasite, which is pretty cool because you can speed up or slow down the lectures. There are two screens, one where you see the professors and another screen that is synced to the computer so you see the powerpoint as professor progresses through it (you can also all the electronic pen marks as the professors write on the powerpoint slides).

Sorry for any grammatical errors, it's late and I'm too tired to proofread. 😴

The administration is getting more used to the synchronous technology and so there are more and more classes in which Baltimore and SG students must show up on campus. When I entered as a P1, it was their first year with SG, there were no synchronous classes, everything was recorded, and SG only showed up on campus once a week for a quiz/exam.

As a third year, I am in class Mon/Wed/Fri from 9am-5pm. YES all day!! (Hopefully this will change with the new curriculum). OUR class was the reason there's a reputation that Baltimore students do not go to class and watch lectures at home. That is unfortunately not true anymore (I miss those days...). This is because they have put in ways to make us come to school 😛 We have a synchronous class almost EVERY Mon/Wed/Fri now (class is not recorded, and SG is on another screen and can interact directly with the Baltimore campus). So for the 3rd year class....Baltimore does not skip real class anymore! Let the rumor be gone!

Yes gone are the days when SG pharmacy students are no where to be found on campus. With the new curriculum, I find myself on campus almost 4 times a week (which I preferred because I get too distracted at home). I am sure we are going to be spending a lot more time on campus for PP&T and case studies and all the goodness that comes with it :scared:. (FYI PP&T is a 27 credits P1&P2 class structured after the P3 therapeutics class (ISAT)). Fun fun fun
