Does anyone have any information on the UM interview. I have an interview there october 12 and do not really know what to expect. Any information would be appreciated!

Assuming things haven't changed, after you collect your name tag and packet, you'll be directed to one of the rooms to have some refreshments (OJ, coffee, fruit, doughnuts, etc) and meet other applicants. There will typically be other students (1st and 2nd yrs) present to poke and prod with any questions to have. Once all the applicants have arrived, Dr, Hayes, the dept chair, will usually speak to everyone. I believe you'll probably hear from Rik or Jean about financial related issues/questions as well. After that you'll be split into 3 groups. 1 group will be assigned to a faculty member to interview with. Those probably last anywhere from 20-30 minutes. The 2nd group will get a tour of the UM campus, and the 3rd group will get a tour of the dept which is basically just the 3rd/5th floor. I believe the dept has recently taken over some space on the 1st and 4th floors as well, so you may see what's going on there too. The groups will alternate until you've all interviewed, and gotten tours of the campus and the dept. Any down time in between is usually a good time to continue asking questions of the other students.

That's basically the gist of it. Hope that helps.

BTW, there is limited parking, so keep that in mind before you arrive. There are @ 10 spots behind the plumer bldg that are first come first serve to students who do not have a parking permits. Students usually have Fridays off (unless there is a planned elective course) so you have a good chance of getting one if you arrive early. Other that that, there is some metered parking around the building, and I believe you can still purchase daily passes at the Ponce de Leon parking garage to be able to park in a student parking lot.

Good luck.

Thank you for the reply! Anything regarding the interview with the faculty I should be aware of? Any ethical questions or questions about bad grades?

Hey, I have nothing to add, but best of luck! UM's my alma mater, and I applied there as well.

Not really, it could be any of the faculty or clinical staff. You could go to the the UMPT website and review some of their bio's though. From my own experience and the experience I've heard from others when I was a student is that the interview feels more like a conversation. Sure, they'll throw in some 'interview' questions, but I believe they just want to get to know you/your personality. They already have all the info they need to determine what type of student you are. So, besides reading up on current PT issues, relax and be yourself.

Has anybody had an interview that wasn't on a Friday? I have an interview there on Wednesday and I had heard that most interviews are on Fridays and in a group setting, but it also sounds like mine is only myself. Anyone with the same experience? Any comments? Thanks.

Hey there, I'm a current UM student and I had an interview in the middle of the week recently. They told me that they scheduled it on a non-Friday to save me from the unnecessary campus tour.

In any event, there's really nothing special to mention about the experience. I arrived at least 15 minutes before my scheduled time and went up to the fifth floor where I met Jhelane (she's the one who contacted you via email). She welcomed me and told me I'd be interviewing with Dr. So-and-so. Few minutes later, she took me to their office where the interview was to be conducted.

The interview, honestly, felt more like a conversation between colleagues. I really enjoyed it. We talked about a number of things, including: my shadowing experiences (what types of clinics they were, what I learned), short/long-term goals, what specialties I was interested in, etc. You're going to be nervous leading up to the interview, but that feeling goes away immediately once you realize there is no spotlight on you while you're grilled on your application's weaknesses. Remember that while you may feel you have to "sell" your case as a candidate, they're pretty much selling theirs as well. You got an interview for a reason! Don't be scared to ask questions of your own (at the appropriate times); you have the right - but of course, remember to be respectful.

After the interview, things are wrapped up - you're given a tour of the PT facilities - and that's it!
Good luck! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask - I'll try to respond before Wednesday.

Thanks for your reply! It's nice to hear that the interview wasn't too harsh. Have you heard back yet? If so, how long did it take before you got a response? Thanks again!

I was recently accepted into the program, and it took them roughly 3 weeks to get back to me (I'm sure it varies).

Let me know how it goes! Best of luck.

I feel like the interview went well. It was very laid back, just a conversation. Exactly like you said. I still feel like it could go either way, though. My stats aren't amazing. But, all I can do now is wait. Thanks for your help!

No problem. Glad to hear it went well.

In any event, the ball's in their court now. Hope you get some good news!

I had my interview today and I absolutely loved the campus, faculty, and students. I went in there very anxious and nervous, but I left feeling as though I gave it everything I had. All that's left to see is if they think I'm a good match for their school 🙂
