I'm just a pre-med student, so I don't know very much about residency programs, but as far as I can tell, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (primarily affiliated with Jackson Memorial Hospital) doesn't seem to have a residency program in Emergency Medicine. That seems unusual to me, considering that Jackson is home to a pretty busy level one trauma center.

Does anybody know why Miller/Jackson doesn't have an EM residency program? Also, in general, do you think students should consider what residency programs schools do or don't have when deciding where to go for medical school, or does that not matter for medical students?

Thanks!

I worked at Jackson Memorial for a couple of years before medschool, primarily in the ED, and I wondered the same thing several times. At the time, the rumor going around was that the Trauma Department basically ran the ED and they did not want to give up control of it to the ED docs.

I think that Jackson would be a great place to start an EM residency, they have a very under served and sick population that would be great to learn from, not to mention more trauma than you can shake a stick at. Hopefully in the future something gets started, although with the funding problems Jackson has had recently I would not hold my breath.

I have friends that are residents at Jackson and the hospital is in bad bad shape. I wouldn;t anticipate a residency here for at least the next 5 years...maybe more...maybe never. It is that bad.

It's such a shame, Jackson could be such a badass hospital, but they just don't have the money.

Thanks for all of the replies, everyone.

If I am considering UMMSoM for medical school, and I'm really interested in EM, should I be concerned at all about the school's lack of an EM residency? Do you think it might hold me back in the match, maybe due to difficulty getting SLORs or something like that?

Thanks!

I am very familiar with jackson memorial and the Trauma service does not run the ED and honestly has no interest in it. They run the TRAUMA side. And they act as a consultant for surgical patients. The ED is *huge* there. It would be an amazing place for a residency but the hospital hasn't increased FTE funding in years, from what I hear which means no new residency. Also, last I was there, a good half of hte faculty in the ED was not BC EM's. The RRC and ABEM do not allow EM residents to be supervised in the ED by non-EM boarded physicians.

And don't forget politics...

You should be ok as long as you do an away rotation at a place w/ a residency program to get a SLOR, early enough for the letter to get loaded into ERAS for other programs to see (by early October, ideally). Often if you do an away rotation and are from a school w/o an EM program, one of the faculty at the away (PD, APD, clerkship director) will be generous enough to provide some advisement re: the application/match process and your prospects for EM. So it's a little tougher than being at a school with an EM program, but certainly not impossible.

Good luck!
