Tell Kevin Tremper that his former residents at UC Irvine miss him dearly.

Anyone?

The way I understood it when I talked with the PD during my interview it wouldn't be until the first part of January until we (DO's) hear anything, that way they were able to interview all DO's on their schedule.

Were you told otherwise?

They offer outside of the match??

They offer outside of the match??

U. of M. only takes DO's outside of the match. They take up to 2 per class. The reason they take you outside of the match is 2-fold: 1.) Michigan is one of the five states and their 1st year is not AOA approved; 2.) they can "cherry-pick" the best DO's without having to worry about you ranking another program ahead of them.

? Michigan is one of the five states. . . meaning? Sorry I'm a little confused.

As DO's there are 5 states (MI, WV, OK, FL, PA) that require osteopathic students to do an AOA (AOA = american osteopathic association) approved osteopathic internship to be able to practice in those states when finished with residency. Some ACGME internships are dual accreditied, unfortunately U. of M. is not one of the. There is also resolution 42 where one can try to get it waved, but that is for a whole other thread.

Make sense...? If you are a MD student this obviously does not pertain to you.

the only reason this is in issue with programs in michigan is because in addition to the fact that michican is one of the five states in which you need an AOA approved internship to practice after residency, it is also one of the two states (oklahoma as well) in which you need an AOA approved internship in order to start a residency. hence the need for dual accreditation of the intern year. even though penn state, for example, provides the opportunity for osteopaths to complete the requirements for the intern year, it is not required in order to start the residency. similiarly, there is no compulsory AOA year before training at WVU or UFla either.

at least this is how i understand it - someone correct me if i'm wrong.

You are correct. Have to love an antiquated system.

Hey, I was out on the interview trail and heard that Michigan has already offered at least one spot maybe two. The contract has been signed is the word on the trail. These have been both to DO students. Hope this helps or at least gives some people a heads up. And no it was not me. 😉

Can anyone else confirm this????????? I know quite a few pwoplw here interviewed there.

I know of at least one person was offered a spot (I saw the letter). He's from AZCOM. Are they only accepting 2 DOs for advanced spots for 2008?

Azcomstud, I assume you are from AZCOM, just a guess. So are you the lucky one to get the offer? And if you saw the letter did he/she accept and sign the contract?

Isoflurane- I'm pretty sure he signed. He's been on away rotations for the last couple of weeks so I can't confirm this. Haven't heard about if any other offers have been sent out to DO apps. I interviewed there back in November and haven't received a response yet. They said they had received about 70 applications from DOs and that they were interviewing 18 (I think) for 2 advanced spots. Can anyone confirm this? I guess time will tell. Good luck everybody👍
